It's surprising to see that Anna is predicted as the one to lose her quads. I'm not sure I understand why - it's been measured several times that her 4Lzs are bigger than Sasha's, no? She does rotate quickly due to her very clean and near perfectly tight and straight air position, but that's just one component of her jumps, and a very important one. Jumpers like Sotskova and Tsurskaya had all the height and distance but were also notorious for under-rotations because they couldn't rotate quickly enough even with all the extra air time. Also, many falls have been the result of being off axis like on some of Kamila's 4Ts snd Rika's 3As. All jumps adequate height, distance, and rotation and air position. I don't understand why Anna's rotation is brought up like a negative when it's actually a positive, but even then her quads aren't smaller than the average ladies'? Smaller than Kamila and Sasha's 4Ts, but not smaller than Sasha's 4Lzs and Rika's 4S from the numbers I've seen.
Puberty can cause huge coordination problems depending on how much the skaters grow but I don't think we have reason to believe that Anna will grow much more than the other skaters. Both her parents are very slim as adults, as is her older sister, and they don't look that much taller than her (unlike Elena Radionova's dad, for example). She has grown a bit and is also already the tallest of all the quad and 3A jumpers and she's kept her quads so far. She can lose them in the future of course, but so can any of the other skaters.
Anna does has flat edge issues on some of her 4Lzs, but I don't think a flat edge has ever been known to cause jump problems during puberty.
This is an interesting topic that I’d like to comment on.
Anna is obviously extremely talented, has great height and air position, and has the ability to rotate very quickly in the air. But she very often pre-rotates her quad lutz and really wrenches her back and body to force herself to rotate four revolutions quickly enough. Tursynbaeva also did this going into her quad salchow, and she had a back injury that took her out for the majority of last season.
With all of these ladies doing quads, it’s a very exciting time in ladies skating! But the coaches and athletes need to make sure that what they are doing is safe and healthy for these skaters! I hope these girls can hang onto their quads through puberty, but we don’t really know what will happen, as we are yet to see skaters land quads that they learned at a young age consistently in competition through puberty (which makes sense because none of the girls with quads, other than Ando, have gone through puberty - Tursynbaeva and Tuktamysheva both learned the quads post-puberty).
Because were not really sure what exactly could happen with the quad girls during puberty, betting on a younger skater for the olympics May be smarter (according to some, not everyone), as the worry of “what happens when they grow” will not yet be necessary.
Please don’t hate on me! I’m not trying to be critical, I really hope Anna does well, but I worry for her and these other girls who are revolutionizing the sport!
