Nathan Chen is another (sort-of) example - not sure if he got the 3A before or after his first quad, but it was very hit-or-miss until after the 2018 Olympics. Even then, he wisely doesn't do more than the minimum with it (1 in each programme, no combos, just making sure to land it clean).
I wonder if it's due to a lack of programme runthroughs? Most skaters do cardio but it seems like the approach to run-throughs/competition simulations varies a lot by coach. There's nothing quite like actual skating for building skating-specific stamina (I thought jogging and skipping during lockdown would help, but nope, still had my Makar moments when the rink reopened

Yeah, you are right of course. It was my initial disappointment speaking in my post above. Of course there will be other great skaters I'll enjoy. It's just that I see the Austrians at least once a year at nats, but it's not so often that I have the Russians at my front door.

Samarin and Ignatov were both doing their best to skate clean, balanced programs. I really appreciated it, particularly with Samarin’s attention to step sequence. Getting two level 4 from that technical panel was no mean feat. And, honestly, Ignatov’s two skates were probably the best performance by a Russian senior man this season. Zero falls, 4x4 in the free, two quads in the short. Really worth acknowledgment. Makar is on the list!
It's true that especially Makar always looks wiped out in the second half of his FS, but then again, I often think to myself that these coaches have lots of experience on how to condition their skaters. Maybe it is a fine line to walk between doing full program runthroughs and over-training? From the impact alone, there are considerable forces acting on the joints and bones of a 70-80kg guy jumping quads. There probably is a limit to how many quads they can do each day without risking permanent damage to the back and hips. I imagine that it could be somewhat easier for the smaller, lighter skaters, where the impact of the jumps doesn't put as much strain on the body.
From some comments I read, I thought that Makar must have completely messed up his spins, so I was pleasantly surprised that he just missed some levels. Both Makar and Sasha gave it their all in the FS, kudos to them! I also have to mention from time to time that I have a soft spot for Sasha's camel spins, he just hits the position and never drops his free leg below the hip.
And the 4Lz of course is a beauty and a beast!Honestly, I don't even dread GP France anymore, because by the time it comes around I will be totally numb from the Warsaw Challenger.
Like I know Lyosha and Ilya are there to get minimums for Europeans and Worlds, but what if they do brilliantly and bring home all the medals? Or what if one of them has a bad day and gets buried? What will RusFed do when RusNats come around? Do they already have an international team in mind, or would they be open to new additions? (And yes, I totally feel like I'm on a nickname basis now with Erokhov, ever since I spent an afternoon adding over 100 links to his GoldenSkate media profile, including from when he was a baby skater in a pink frilly outfit performing to Austin Powers. Be glad that he didn't decide to bring back that costume! )
