I can’t agree more with everything that has been said! Plus, imo, there is an unfortunate tendency to push them into seniors, then demand performance above their physical ceiling. Mozalev was gorgeous with one quad and stamina that allowed devotion to unusual and faithfully recreated choreography. That fateful day he said ‘seniors and 3 quads’… I rue that day. His strengths lay elsewhere. They are still there, except now he is injured and terrified by the look of it.
At any rate, they all perform at the bleeding edge of their ability, there is a pleiad of them, presenting programs to basically any taste. It’s an awesome field. Awesome. So, praise where praise is due. And, no, it’s not to the detriment of senior men that women and junior men perform admirably. It’s a separate good thing. Great thing!
Finally, I don’t know if Malinin or Kolesnikov will turn this around, but it seems that Russian-born men who started quads early and copiously have troubles mid-teens, as in Gogolev, Samsonov, Fedotov, Lukin… there are reasons for 17 yo women to be senior champions, but for men?
