2023-24 French Championships

Adam said that he wanted to try five quads in the FP and judge his state of form. He would like to keep his Euro title and, as for Worlds, he's going to concentrate on his own performance more than any specific result.
He's going to rest a bit, in order to be in good form for Euros. He joked that he will get his rest while going back to Nice.

So crushed for Kevin! I do think that this competition was a scheduled disaster for him: not enough time to recover physically and mentally from GPF in China.
On the other hand, what makes Kevin so special is his sensitivity ... he is an artist at heart and figure skating can be brutal because it is about physical and mental strength combined. Mental strength is a tough beast to tame.
Something I heard in Adam's interview: focussing foremost on the process rather than the title. This might be good also for Kevin.

Just watched Kévin AYMOZ (GRENO). And it was so sad to watch.

I don't know what was going on. Too soon after GP Final; injury; sickness; or what. But, it was clear he shouldn't have been out there.

Kévin, just go home and have a good rest over the festive period, and put skating out of your mind. And once you have your batteries recharged, come back and show everybody just what you are capable of.

:ghug:

Just finished, and have looked at the results page.

My goodness! Kévin's FS score (94.42) is only 0.73 points higher than his SP score (93.69).

I don't suppose that happens too often, having nearly identical scores in both segments.

I'm not going to bother looking at the Protocols. And I hope Kévin doesn't either. I hope he just blanks this event out of his head.

I realy enjoyed watching Luc Econimides skate, he's got an uncanny musicality, especially in the step sequence in the short.

Adam was the predictable runaway winner. Though it was a bit odd when the camera fade not working properly was showing two of him spinning at once.

At the start of yesterday's coverage, one of the commentators (the guy who did the post-competition interviews) did an on-screen introduction. And the on-screen graphic said he was Olivier Jacquemin. Now, when I looked up his name, I found that he is one of these people that commentates on anything and everything.

I don't know who was sitting beside him in the commentary box. But there were credits at the end of Saturday's coverage, and the commentators were listed. Here are the names, along with my description of them:

  • Olivier Jacquemin [general sport commentator]
  • Fabrice Blondel [Ice Dancer]
  • Maxime Combes [Pairs Skater]
  • Alexis Sodogas [Short Track Speed Skater]
  • Florent Amodio [Men's Skater]

Whether any of them, or somebody different, was doing the Men's SP coverage with Olivier, I don't know. But, given what you said about them, I really hope it wasn't Amodio!

it was maxime... because he said his name at some point...

What in the world happened?

Kevin is getting roasted online, both for his performance and for the interview afterwards.

I don't speak French well enough to translate - my everyday usage is far too rusty - but the interpretations I've seen of this interview are not good. Do we have a native speaker who can clear things up?

Could you provide a link to the interview? There are a few GSers able to translate for you if you wish. I am running to the studio right now, if nobody has answered you by the time I get home, I can help.

Are you talking about an interview or his conversation in the KnC?. I tried to listen to the KnC conversation, but Kévin has a soft voice and to my Anglophone ears a difficult to understand southern French accent and was upset, so I didn't catch a lot of it.

That would be horrible if he was being "roasted" online for a conversation with a coach when he was upset after a disaster skate. Who are those people. Then again, maybe it is something else entirely?

I didn't read anything on social media ... it usually riles me up, so I refrain. I only witnessed the K&C and predictably, he was fighting tears and his emotions. The gist of it is that he is worn down: day to day practices are becoming harder because he feels tired of chasing the elusive victory. The ups and downs are taking their toll and since Adam is now at the top, he is getting the feeling that he 'blew" it and that he won't ever achieve his career goals. He came across as depressed.
There was nothing nefarious or mean to any of his comments... he was just hugely disappointed in his performance. I think a mental coach could help him get rid of the pressure he puts himself under. He is such a benighted performer that he could profit from getting immersed in the performance itself rather than on podium expectations.

Dear Kevin - please call Jason Brown ASAP and ask for a advice and a pep talk on how to enjoy your skating career and not worry about all this other stuff cause the rest of us love you and want you to continue and most of all be happy. Luv from us fans:ghug::console:

Thanks for the gist of the interview (or K&C moment).

To clarify, after years of resistance, I created Instagram and X (Twitter) accounts where I do only one thing... follow skaters, ISU and USFSA and so forth, skating podcasts, that sort of thing. I never post or comment... I just use them as newsfeeds.

But today one of those was packed with commentary about Kevin... mostly from users I do not follow. I guess whatever algorithm is used sent me any hot skating topic, and this morning... Kevin was a very hot topic online.

I wish he understood that he has and will have a successful career. 12 years on the international stage, and only 2 of them , he didn't receive any medals. He is Fifth on the season best. His Bolero program is one of the best programs of the year. I'm so sad for him.
