2023 JGP Istanbul Women's Short Program

The common suffix for Georgian last names is -shvilli or -dze, like in Kvitalashvilli and Tutberidze. Niyaz in her last name probably points to one of many Muslim ethnicities in her background.

From her last name, I would have more so expected her to have Turkic ancestry - Kazhastan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, not necessarily Georgian.

Thank you both for the information.

I knew about the male and female suffixes that are found in Georgian names, but was curious if there were prefixes too.

So, it actually indicates a Muslim / Turkic background.

Thank you both for telling me. I find that sort of thing fascinating!

:thank:

As for why she represents Hungary, she has Hungarian ancestry through her paternal grandfather.

She started representing Hungary last season, prior to that she competed domestically in Russia, where she was born and raised (and still lives and trains).

Very interesting. So, she does have family ties to the country.

That is a relief. I was worried that she was one of the Russian skaters with no connection to the country that Papp was complaining about being brought in by Vardanjan.

"Hotel California"!!!! :cheer:   :party2: :points:

Pity about the "Hip Hip, Chin Chin" before it.

This is her second Junior GP, isn't it? Because I remember thinking that it was a strange combination of songs before.

EDIT: Or, maybe not. I just checked, and this is her first. Somebody else must have skated to it or some other strange combination.

I think a great-grandfather prob qualifies as no links. Like, one of mine was Polish, but I am not sure I would be considered a representative Pole.

Well not that I'm blaming Polina D or anything, but poor Vivian I really enjoyed her skating!

An Ecadorian (sp?) skater, neat!

Wow check out the sparkle here!

Baby Olesya 🥹 She really looks so young here, what is up with all of the German skaters looking younger to me than they are?

And she can continue enjoying it, in a stronger competitive environment, and so does Polina. Or she can go look for even smaller pond. It's only fair.

I have my issues with her dress (the white, what's the tutu for with this music) but that was a really good skate.
