Flores/Wang lost levels on their death spiral and lost points on their twist. That's where they lost on TES to Desrochers/Thrasher. Putting it down to politics does a disservice to all the teams and the tech panel in my opinion.

I get that Flores/Wang are popular, but it's so close for the top three that it doesn't matter who is in first. No one has a massive lead over the others and it'll come down to the free. The top three will have to be on their game to win.

I do agree about the narrative about Jazmine's experience since it's a false one. She has been competing since 2016, it does a disservice to the work that she's put in.
I looked up Jasmine’s competition history as you made me curious. She competed Starskate and Juvenile in 2020 and moved to PreNovice in October 2021, but never at a higher level in singles. So not quite 3 years out of Starskate programme. Starskate is viewed by many as a learn-to-figureskate programme rather than a competitive programme. So I take their point she didn’t have a lot of higher level competition under her belt like Lia and Fiona but not sure how she compares to other junior pairs girls. But I enjoyed their programme today. Much better skating skills than last year and a fantastic triple twist

A very good start for this team. Their doubles look very comfortable, the lifts are solid, and overall they seem to be well-matched. They are so young, and I think they have a bright future ahead.
I like that they have very solid basics of singles and pairs. He has a lot of charisma and she has a natural elegance.

I've just watched this. Lovely to have the JGP back. As I suspected, the unknown (to me Chinese team) looked great. Neamh and Daniel didn't have their best skate, but they've competed two weeks running and done a lot of travelling in that time. They were slightly better a last week's GB qualifier. Daniel has only been doing pairs a few months, so we should see plenty of development.

I love Olivia's costume. I love Luke's costume.

But the two costumes do not go well together. At all. The colours really clash with each other.

The skating was good, though, and they go into 2nd. Just a sliver over a point behind the leaders.

I too don't understand why the costumes are two different colors. Both skaters exude confidence and expression while seeming to skate without pressure. His lines are a bit more elegant than hers, but she has a projection that reaches out strongly to the audience. A few bobbles here indicative of an early season skate but overall in a good place right now.

I didn't understand the costumes either. The colours jarred a bit. They are both lovely skaters, though. I'm sure their levels will pick up as the season progresses.

Unfamiliar with the French team, but rather enjoyed them, potential there
Romane TELEMAQUE / Lucas COULON FRA got my attention last year. Despite her youth, they project a confidence in their own abilities. There is a lovely partnership and steadiness to them. Their expression should growth during the year, but I see a team evenly matched and developing nicely.

WELL DONE NEAMH AND DANIEL
It was well done. Neamh has a lovely personality and elegance. She is perfectly sized for a female pair skater. Great work by Daniel without a lot of experience, but I see the bones of a very nice team. It should be fun to watch them develop this season into a very capable team.

beautiful costumes!
Debora Anna COHEN / Lukas VOCHOZKA CZE ha lovely matching fuchsia and navy costumes. Her hair and look is striking. They are well matched. Lots of changes in armholds, perhaps too many as when doing the elements her arms seem a bit wild and not well checked. They are still new to pairs, but retain an enthusiasm to their skating.

Reagan MOSS / Jakub GALBAVY USA have improved greatly already from last year's scores domestically. They have nice matching long lines. She has a lovely radiance to her expression while he is a solid pair guy. I really like their steadiness - a few minor wobbles, but an overall calmness to their skating. They do not make me nervous. With more mileage I could see them really turn on the expression and speed by later in the season. Very neat skating. There is a gutsiness to her that I like.

Katalin Janne SALATZKI / Lukas ROESELER GER - nice to see another German team. Impressive sbs triples and great height on 2tw and 3throw. Solid, solid skating from these two. With time they will skate with more speed, but very nice right now.

Yeah, I think that's where the confusion is coming in. She doesn't have the higher level competition that others have had, 2022-23 was the first season she competed at the national level with Aidan Wright. So she's doing well with competing internationally when most of her competition experience prior to last season was at the provincial level.

Jiaxuan ZHANG / Yihang HUANG CHN are JGP rookies. I can see the great Chinese technique except for one bad fall and wonderful choreography by Wenjing Sui.

Louise EHRHARD / Matthis PELLEGRIS FRA skated nicely, but for me not spectacularly. For some reason I have trouble remembering this team. Their expression seems very internal and doesn't draw me in despite solid skating skills.

Jazmine DESROCHERS / Kieran THRASHER CAN skated one of my favorite programs to Amelie. This team has a pleasing expression individually and together. There are some shaky spots here (her solo jump still makes me hold my breath a bit) but it is early in the season and this could be an outlier, but overall top notch.

Zhang/Huang were great, I wouldn't be surprised if they win here. Shame about the fall, it looked painful. I thought I heard a yell on the stream and Mark said he heard it too :(

I am stepping back in to the sp comments to follow-up on my previous observations. Life is busy for me right now so my time is limited, but I want to take this time to wade back in on the junior pairs sp at Riga. At this point, I have not seen any of the free program performances because the start time was way too early for me. As I began writing this post, the final pair was up, when I quickly glanced at the live results page. Still, I have not seen the performances and I don't know the final outcome yet. So, I will comment later on the free programs in the fp thread once I see them.

In regard to the short programs, the protocols were not up when I commented. It's easy to see how the judges scored once the protocols are up. But many of us comment on our immediate reactions before the protocols are available. I did ask what I might be missing in terms of the scoring. The only technical thing I did not notice in real time for Flores/ Wang was whatever issues they had on their death spiral. I noticed the slight issues with sbs spin syncing and the slight contact on their twist dismount. But overall, they skated well, especially on their jump elements. There are often instances, especially in seniors, where judges ignore twist dismount contact. Of course, dismount contact should be noted and judged accordingly, but there is a lot of inconsistency in judging from event-to-event and from panel-to-panel.

The two top teams in the sp have generally equal talent and consistency issues. I think Jazmine is the weaker link in terms of jump elements, but these are all young, developing teams and mistakes can happen for all. D/T have beaten F/W previously. And F/W have beaten D/T previously.

To each their own in terms of skaters you like and root for or not. To each their own opinions regarding judging. But in terms of politics, it flatly exists in the sport of figure skating, and that's undeniable. IMO, it is not a disservice to anyone to mention that politics often factors into judging results. It can factor in less often on the junior level, but it does factor in. Above all, of course, it matters how skaters perform. If all perform relatively well, there is a larger burden on the judges. When skaters do not perform well, and others do, the judges have a less difficult determination.

In the sp at Riga, after looking at the protocols, I still think the judges were fairly lenient on D/T. And the judges seemingly were holding F/W to a high standard as defending junior world silver medalists. While points were deducted for Jazmine's errors, the judges could have taken off more for the obvious tech errors. As well, I see in the protocols that D/T had slightly higher base value on their sp elements. D/T's form on the spins may not even have been taken into account by the judges, even though it was noted by commentators. D/T's lack of pointed toes did not occur to me until the commentators mentioned it. Thus, I later noticed that F/W did point their toes on their sbs spins. Judges may or may not take every aesthetic aspect into account, and each panel can judge slightly differently. It is a subjective sport, so yes, politics and personal preference are always in the mix. All skaters can do is to take control of what is within their power to control in how well they perform.

Status, rep, and ability are more important than 'popularity.' LOL! In the junior ranks, I am not sure how 'popularity' is measured anyway. I think F/W have delightful, engaging personalities which endear them to their fans. But I think mostly diehard figure skating fans follow juniors, so I doubt that any young team have a huge following in general. I like pairs and I follow junior pairs, so I have taken notice of F/W since the beginning of their partnership. Some fans know and like Liv (and her partner, Luke) because they are fans of her sister, ice dancer, Isabella Flores. Personally, I will always root for Liv&Luke because they are a gifted team with true grit. I also enjoy D/T a lot. I have enjoyed watching Kieran ever since he first partnered with Chloe Panetta. I think Kieran and Jazmine are stunning together, with remarkably similar coloring. They are very well matched. If Jazmine can work out the tech issues on her jump elements, they can be at the top consistently. Even with Jazmine's tech drawbacks, the judges clearly like D/T.

I will follow-up overall in the fp thread, after I see those performances. Have a good day everyone!
