Not a good day for the big quads. The winner did the least, presenting "only" 4T+3T and 4S.

4Lz and 4T+3T clean... Second place
4A and 4Lz_3T... Third place.
4Lz+3T and 4Lo... Fourth place.
4Lz and 4T+?... Fifth place
4Lz and 4T+?... Sixth palce.
It's not always what you do but how you do that matters the most

True, true. I think that @Tonto K might have the right perspective -- it's not so much quads versus PCS as it is risk and reward. If a skater's approach to quads is to throw everything at the wall and hope that something sticks, maybe we need to adjust the scoring rules to discourage this sort of game plan..

Just finished watching the Men's Short Program. I love Yuma's program. He was by far, to me, the most interesting of the skaters and presented a gold medal program. Outstanding choreography and delivery. And who on earth made Ilia's costume? :no2: That's probably the worst I've seen him skate this year but not worried - he'll definitely nail it in the free. Shaiderov had a really bad skate but I expect he'll come back also in the free. And poor Adam SHF - just doesn't seem to be able to skate clean this year.

Pairs - to me - were singularly boring. The Italians were the only pair that really stood out. I thought the Japanese were overscored and had a fairly sloppy skate....certainly not their usual.
I remember Nathan Chen lost a competition just before he won the Olympics so I have no doubt Ilia will be fine.

Usually don't watch juniors but enjoyed seeing Rio Nakata and Seo's programs. I love Rio. He looked like he started to run out of gas in the free. I think they were saying he had to limit his practices due to a stress fracture, so maybe his stamina wasn't quite there.. If they can both stay healthy, they will be fun to watch in the future!

Oh great. The return of the "leader's chair".

What was wrong with having them sat backstage with the occasional glimpse from the camera?
I am with you - I hate it.

And me three. ISU / Ted / Mark if you're reading this please please get rid of the leader's chair.

It's so awkward and lonely, what are they supposed to do sitting alone there??? Let the top 3 or at least the top 2 sit together please.

Was mostly bored, with main highlight being Pavlova/Svyatchenko and Krouglov. Love my tryhards and underdogs. Found out that a thought of watching junior women makes me wanna go and wash dishes or vacuum clean or something else. Malinin trying that combo and two-footing it was a bit of a downer, particulary trying to see if the man's SP limitation was only that they need to do 3A separately. Another one was Sato's 3A. But, like, clean-ish Grassl? Nice. Am happy for Kagiyama fans, but he does absolutely nothing for me, so like... good for him/them.

Other than that, honesty, I just like C/B more, so the judges didn't really annoy me. Mark was talking how the things are so different in dance this time, but I don't really see that since all these teams has been around. I mean, maybe he meant Z/K, but it's not like it was Mrazkova/Mrazek qualifying or something totally out of the blue.

I really need something cool (in my books) to happen soonish, otherwise I am ready to take a break from watching figure skating. It's just not the same any more. I am bored.
The japanese have such a strong skating program. For me it’s hard to watch the North American programs not be as competitive in general , apart from a token few. I am from Canada. Over the years it’s taken a dive sadly. A few will rise but there isn’t significant competition.

I dunno. I don't feel current Japanese hold the candle to Uno, save for Miura, but Miura is injured and is not here. Sato is fine too, but not superb yet. As for women, it's like it all shut down for me, because waiting on which one of them maybe lands 3A amidst of all this same sameness... repetitive. I find myself more invested in dance from all things.

Good for M/K - they're probably going to be the OGMs this season - but they really lack the overall skating quality of the winners of the past 4 Olympics, and every world champion pair since 2006 (apart from maybe Mishina/Galliamov).

No adjustments required. The "risk and reward" scenario played out perfectly. Ilia went for huge content, he didn't deliver, and now he's down. Yuma went for a more conservative layout, he delivered, and he's up.

My conspiracy theory for the day is that Ilia went for that content because he wants the total score World Record before the rules change next year, and he's not going to risk it at the Olympics. So last chance for glory, so to speak, at an event I'm not sure he cares if he wins or not. So he threw it at the wall hoping it stuck. It didn't - so no record this time, and he's unlikely to win the title, although he certainly cannot be written off.

They will be the worst olympic gold medalist. They are rushing from one element to another, they cannot hold the position for a few seconds. Everything about them looks unfinished and chaotic. Everything is so rushed
No lines whatsoever
But it doesnt matter because they HAVE AMAZING lifts :laugh4::laugh4::laugh4:

I imagine if we were to really look at their positioning on their lifts and evaluate the lacking qualities of their positions, they won't turn out to be so amazing either, but glad you agree.

Figure skating has never been the same since 2017 worlds. It's especially apparent if I were to compare the top 4 Pairs there and the top 6 men there to the current Pairs and Men - and then there's the fact that those worlds had P/C and V/M both competing against each other too. I used to think those women were weaksauce, but compared to now, I'd take most of them (and it still had Karen Chen's On Golden Pond which was likely the best SP performance all quad). It also had Medvedeva's best SP performance ever for that matter.

They bring speed skating to pairs! Yay!
