I'm finding it hard to believe he's pulling off Prince even with the new copyright rules! (in a good way)

I guess he got the rights secured. I have had to secure rights myself before and it wasn't hard at all... so I don't know why it's so difficult for figure skaters.
It's only the Canadian skaters competing internationally who have to worry about them, Canadian skaters who compete domestic only are covered by Skate Canada

Good to hear from your experience. I'm guessing the lesser-known song he used made it cheaper to get the rights for (if he needed to get the rights for it). I hadn't heard it before myself, but I put two and two together with Shohei's costume...

Maybe, I'm honestly surprised that Camila Volkova was able to use Aladdin on the JGP after Maddie discussing rights being the reason that she wasn't keeping Lion King. Lauriault/Le Gac talked about how the Prince estate wasn't fine with them using the music at the Olympics, which is why they're changing. I'm thinking that it would depend on how high-profile the event is in some cases.

I guess some artists feel it's an honour when their music is used at the Olympics(Elton John/Nathan Chen) (and rights have been secured) and others or their estate do not want it. How polarizing ! Maybe I should start writing music for figure skaters. I am not a composer but I could come up with things at least as good as RYIBE LOL. (and I would allow skaters to use it easily)
U Plavu Zoru by Pink Martini, they also did Joli Garcon that Lia is using for her short. I looked them up, apparently they're American.
