I slept. I am happy I did. I saw the results. I am not sure I want to watch. Should I ?

On paper, without reading anything but the score cards : I am really shocked by the ice dance shifts. They never happen when we want them, but now they happened when we actually perhaps do not want them to happen :).
MEN
A world where Adam and Ilia have the same PCS, or a world were Ilia has 9s and Andrew not even 8s is not the figure skating world I dream of. Especially if Ilia is still using the LP I saw a few weeks ago with these terrible quotes read by his own voice. Maybe he changed it? Anyway... I will have my coffee and decide if I want to catch up on this all.
Those who know me well here, should I bother or stick to tennis ? :)

You should go to "Does the IJS incentivize boring programs?" thread and post there wild.

We need to talk about Levito having 2 points more in presentation than Rion...
What exactly do you want to talk about?

Do you want to talk about Levito being the new PCS queen?
Do you want to talk about Rion pushing her PCS and not succeeding yet?
Or, do you want to talk about a specific judge(s) deliberately underscoring one specific skater in favor of another specific skater in medal contention?

Imho these are three very different topics.

Why watch if you had already made up your mind. Save yourself time and effort.

My mind is not made up ;) at least, yet. The scores say what the judges wanted to reward. I don't care so much about the results but was the skating interesting enough to watch ? I mean, my Frangi is in last place... Kao was KOed. etc. It's not just about Ilia here. I could watch everyone else but him if I decided to. What was your take on it ? Are there at least a few performances exciting enough to watch ? (And btw, I will watch Ilia. I dislike his program choices but I like his jumps and he should be winning events when he jumps well). Nuance is everything : I can like parts of a skater/program and not everything. Sometimes I watch just to see the beautiful costumes :)

For me, there are many things in the world that fill me with moral outrage, There are many things that fill me with sadness. Figure skating is not among them. Quite the contrary. This was a fine competition.
For sure. Life is bigger than figure skating. At the same time, watching sports, for me, has a high entertainment value. It's like watching a movie. Sometimes, there is a new blockbuster announced and one hesitates to go see it in the theatre. After reading reviews and consulting a few friends who've seen it already, a decision can be made. Sometimes, the movie is bad and there are other things better to do :). Sometimes, the movie is still bad but we opt to watch it anyway. It depends what kind of entertainment one needs. Right now, I am wondering if my day would be much better if I skipped 2-3 hours of skating. It's sunny outside. Beautiful day. One needs to prioritize and I am getting my answers from writing this post. I will not watch for now but maybe later when I need something to entertain me out of boredom.

Watch, Adam delivered, Ilia's jumps were goood, you may want to skip Frangi, Kao and Luc.

I think Ilia's jumps were more than a mere "gooood!" He's phenomenol and so effortless. I was happy Adam got it together. He looked really confident out there - a much different skater than from the SP and in front of the home crowd. (y) I loved Andrew's program. Somehow overnight he found the juice to lay down a good program. I thought it was a good competition and definitely separated the men from the boys! This is going to be a good season. And for those who are still criticizing Ilia -a pox on you!

A few FD thoughts while I watch tennis :)

Bratti Somerville : I feel a bit sorry for these two... both their programs were picked up by other teams who had to scrap other ideas (Vogue by FBC and White Crow by LaLa) If I were more entertained with their Madonna and thought, though it was messy, that it stood up as a program despite the other Vogues, their White Crow is very very similar to LaLa's and they suffer in comparison.

Pate and Bye : the Stat lift one on foot. Bravo.

MJ and Romain : WOW just wow. This is how you do a thematic dance. Not my favourite theme but it's so creative. So under-rated. I loved the opening moves, the lifts, the choreographic steps and the last move was cool too. Bravo. I think they really want to get their Olympic spot.

Charlène and Marco : very well skated program, better than the RD. However, it left me wanting more. A lot of the Choreo moves are insipid, especially the Choreo steps. The lifts are simple and not special. Same with the twizzles. The two elements that were very nice were the one foot step sequence and the circular steps. Lots of flow and nice deep edges, cleanly done on these elements. But, without an exciting program, especially after having watched Marie-Jade and Romain just before, they won't get the marks they need at all. As soon as they get their scores, they rush out of the KnC. Clearly, they are not happy. This sport is cruel. It takes years to built momentum and get rewarded. Waiting for your time to come... and as soon as your time is "done", you get dropped. I feel sorry for them. They were never close to be one of my favourite teams but still, there is no denying that their skating is top notch. Barbara's programs have left me lukewarm these past years.

Diana and Gleb : using a classical music piece with long phrases is something new for them. Sometimes, they are able to pull it off, sometimes, not. The twizzles. were off. The serpentine steps, I felt like she was being carried by him as she was dragging. I loved the choreography hydro move. They are improving but it's still not quite at the top level when comparing to other teams who can do this style so much better than them but kudos for pushing themselves.

FBC : This program is olympic worthy. The costumes are beautiful. The music is not bad. It's original. I am happy for Laurence who is shining like never before. However, Guillaume is no longer himself in this partnership, yet, they are skating his style. I don't know. It's just their first season (we will see if there are others) but I don't think they are yet the team I was hoping they would become. I really disliked the second curve lift : the position is not nice and the transition from the first curve lift to the second was really awkward. Judges are happy to give them all the marks. I think they probably would deserve them in a couple months from now but not quite yet. I mean 133 that early in the season for something that at times looks like a work in progress ? Some judges even gave some 10.0s here. I don't know. This was way better than the RD though but if it's already 10.0 worthy, why should they keep improving :) Romain seems very surprised at the score... He is not the only one :)

AliSaul : not much to say here...they have given us these techno dance programs before... I like the first one... this one is ok but the same magic is not there for me. I wished they had gone a different route, especially since their RD is so fun. Happy they medaled though :)

Lilah and Lewis : kudos to them for doing something different. I guess they had to because the RD theme this year is what they usually do.
However, it doesn't go far enough for me. I was trying to find things to like all the way through and I couldn't.
Also, the bagpipe song at the end, this a "farewell" song in French (Ce n'est qu'un au revoir.... ) that we sing at New year's or at a farewell party. Does it have the same connotation in English ? Is that the hint that they are retiring ?
Good scores but I knew it wasn't going to win because I had looked at the scorecards before watching :). and honestly, I am not unhappy that they didn't win with this program. It was a bit bland.

So in the end, I am happy I watched. The scores. well... a bit too high for me for some teams, especially that early in the season with teams still sort of figuring out what they are doing. Nobody was dancing with much freedom, which is normal... so why give them PCS and GOE like candies ? Halloween is in 12 days I guess.

Hungarians almost managed it.

And, I am getting so tired of the whole passive aggressive stuff. A higher praise for one skater, love for them, and appreciation for their artistry doesn't take away from the older favs. Ilia is fun, entertaining and brazen in his programs, leveraging his exceptional jumping talents to include stuff that goes beyond already beautiful jumping passes and spins. As the rest of the field struggles, he shines.

The most amazing but also revolting comment on human nature is that the toxic dislike of Ilia gives raise to insincere championing of other skaters who are perceived in any way as his potential rivals. Basically anyone who at all can come close to beating him is declared artistic and is bathed in toxic positivity. Lol. I guess it's Egadze's turn now and I can't wait for the intellectual contortions it would take some posters here to upheld him as the rising star of artistic figure skating for being second to Ilia and go on about how much he improved.

Imo, Ilia deserves better from the fandom and the other skaters also deserve better. There is such a thing as karma. If you sit there, feverishly praying that Ilia trips on each one of his passes, that toxic energy would attach itself to whoever is your favorite. This is btw why you don't even see his program, because all you do is wait for next chance for him to make a mistake.
Preach. Like who you want. You can prefer one skater over another. But being toxic is another thing.
