59th ISU Congress: Watch and Discuss

Jason had millions of views in a few days for Riverdance. I don't recall anyone from the ISU doing squat to officially promote him, other than, how cool (I will say, since it was right before the Olys, there was promotion from media, social and otherwise)

Donovan Carrillo has brought millions of viewers to YouTube. Did I see any official support from the ISU? Any taking of his popularity into account when devising rules? No, I did not.

(and I would argue that as far as *new* figure skating fans are concerned, Donovan has done more to attract them than any other skater, bar none.)

So why on God's green earth should the ISU pass, or not pass, rules taking into account only one particular skater *now*? And this rule is not "OMG we hate Ilia and only Ilia rule". Please.

The rule IMO is a good one, I like it, maybe it should have been passed earlier, I hope it does what I think the intention is, but hey, you don't know until you try.

Jesus, do you even give a rat's ass about the sport at all or just some "poor kid"?

Lol, goodness. WTH. I've been watching FS for decades. Excuse me for being excited about something I had never seen before. We all have reasons to be interested in skating, and everyone's interest waxes and wanes over time for whatever reasons.

Finland objects to 247 (cross-roll). Objection rejected, kept in package. That's it for ice dance.

Looks like no objections to the synchro package, so that's done.

Poor old ice dance. Can they bring some drama:drama: /s

Has the jump thing passed or not?

This rule can force Ilia to became truly marvelous skater. I'm not sure what to think about "fans" who don't want their fav to be awesome, have a long career and explore many ways of performing and instead want them to perform just this one type of elements that can easily end their careers.

Exactly. Why should anyone's motives trump anyone else's? Leave it in the athletes' hands.

You want to beat the best? Then get better.
This goes in all directions. A world champion should be the best all-around skater. If the quadsters want to win, then let's make sure they can spin, do steps and get PCS they really deserve. Right now, we have a world champion that isn't well-rounded. It would be nice for him to have to get better to be the best don't you think so ? All season, we have heard the words " i am focusing on improving my PCS" I saw him in October at ACI and at Worlds in March... I saw very minor changes in PCS but gosh did he jump much better in March than in October.

Make of this post whatever you wish to make of it.

That applies to on-ice skills as well as above-ice skills.

The problem is that a minority of skaters have been able to push the above-ice skills to exceptional levels that the majority (including a minority who are actually better skaters on the ice) mathematically cannot keep up. "Getting better" at skating is not the same as "add more revolutions in the air." Maybe it's the same as getting better at jumping. But the sport is not all about jumping.

Yes, I wish the system and rule changes could be such that we are mathematically giving more weight on the the non-jumping elements and program components more but without having to remove the jumping passes to try to re-balance the scores or programs or whatever. It's like re-lowering one column rather than bring the other column up. Maybe extending the program length would have been better, but oh well, this is what it is, and I understand the intentions/sentiment behind it.

How do you feel about the Zayak rule?

Happy for it. I also think a second Zayak rule should have been created that the skate has to have a certain distance above the ice for it to even be considered a jump. If you're going to get credit for a jump, then actually jump.

What was so exciting? I must have missed it.

Proposal 241, including choreo spins, remains in the figure skating package following drama from yesterday. Like with the 6-jump change, it will move forward to be voted on (and most likely passed) with other proposals in the package.

:) Yeah, you probably did.

It's OK. We don't need to be excited about the same things. I wonder too if maybe I really have become fully cynical after watching skating for a long time. What excited me maybe 15 years ago doesn't excite me anymore now, and I probably will have another view 15 years ago from now as well.

I was so excited about Boyang's quad lutz just a few years ago... and I couldn't care less about quad lutzes anymore... What a demanding fan have I turned into :)

However, give me a great program with interesting choreo, and then, I go back and rewatch it... I have never gone back to rewatch Boyang's quad lutzes.

Me, rewatching D'Artagnan and Elvis Stojko Nagano FS. I don't remembef if Candeloro did any quads at all and Elvis went for tripple instead of quad in this program because he was injured. And theese are legendary programms and skaters.
