Bad break (no pun intended) for Gracie. Rest up, work on strengthening in other areas and be ready for Nationals.

Gracie's father is an anesthesiologist, so I would imagine her training expenses aren't a burden to her family.

Remember that she has a twin sister who skates too. And I'm sure even the best-paid anesthesiologists would hesitate at the outlay.

I would agree with the previous poster's comment about the Gold family's finances.

Anesthesiologists have HUGE professional expenses. In the late 1980s, my best friend's brother just graduated from medical school as one. I remember their mom commenting that malpractice insurance alone cost over $100K (its is #2 to OB). And that was 30+ years ago.

To the best of my knowledge, Obamacare has not brought down malpractice insurance.

I just found this "As well as CoverGirl, her Twitter profile lists other sponsors: Visa, United Airlines, Procter & Gamble Family, Smucker's, Pandora Jewelry and Airweave."

Not sure how lucrative any of these are. My guess is Cover Girl, Visa, UA and P&G all have the potential.

I think the average anesthesiologist probably makes $400K-$500K from their practice, in addition to whatever supplementary income they earn (i.e. giving talks on behalf of drug companies, etc.). Specialists in the US do very well, especially if they live in states such as Texas with higher reimbursement rates.

I don't know, but he has two daughters training, both with Frank. That might be burdensome.

But I remember Gracie said she loved to wake up listening the sea, so when she moved to California, they bought or rented a house near to beach, no much sacrifice, it should be expensive. I remember the interview where Yulia said that she is training with more peace now because they could to have a own house because the government gift them a house after her results at Sochi.

Remember that average $260K is pre-tax and they are paying for skating with after-tax dollars. At that tax bracket, there is a HUGE difference between the two. Also, most anethesiologist are not in private practice - they are employed by a hospital. So relocation for the father may be tricky - did the father move or just the girls? And I thought they were from the Chicago area which has a relatively high cost of living.

My impression is Gracie is not the type to complain. She seems like she is a half-full type of girl. So her comment about the ocean makes sense if that is a correct assessment. Would you rather that she whine about the friends she left behind?

The average salary for an anesthesiologist in the US is $260, 000 +. After paying for both Gracie and her sister and malpractice, doesn't look like one would be left with a whole lot to meet other expenses.

Physician salaries are grossly underreported in these surveys because they are able to write off a lot of their income. Until the last few years, physicians were also allowed to co-own medical facilities and the income from that usually far exceeded their income from practicing. I'm just saying there is quite a bit more variability in the numbers and many sources of income that aren't reported in such surveys.

I don't think it's really anyone's business but theirs what Gracie's father earns, is it?

My only point was that the sort of outlay to pay for not one, but two high-level skaters per year is such that anyone, regardless of salary, would hesitate.

Disagree with your conclusions about Gracie.

She sleeps on a trundle bed in the room that she shares with Carly in their California bungalow. Soon after they got settled, Gracie spoke in an interview of househunting for something affordable and feeling fortunate that they found a "cozy" (read: small) place that was within their budget.

Their father continues to live and work in Illinois, so the Gold family bears the costs of two residences.

If I had to guess, I would say that they prob. do not live in the lap of luxury, although they are not struggling paycheck to paycheck either.

I remember that Gracie once said that after a competition, she would love to indulge in a pizza from one of the big American chains (I forget whether she said Domino's or Pizza Hut). The point is that it was something quite ordinary (if caloric) -- as opposed to a pricey delicacy from a four-star restaurant. Anecdotal, but it does not suggest a taste for extravagance.

A bungalow or small house in the beach are expensive in tourist states where I live, so I assumed that in California it would be more expensive, it is great this is cheap.

Well, calling a one or two room bedroom appartment that Yulia got a house is a bit too much. :)

Hope that Gracie will recover soon! Whether she lives in an expensive bungalow or a small shack does not matter. She's an athlete and being out off the competition because of the injury sucks. Hope to see her skate strong and be healthy by Worlds.

Sorry, what I was trying to say is that costs apparently do matter to the Golds -- their outlook does not seem to be that "money is no object" for them.

And I have no idea whether their California home was/is "cheap." But I do think that they had to shop carefully and to find a good value.

(I will end my speculation here.)
