Grand Prix 2016-17 News/Speculation

Well less than 4 weeks until we find out....and this is taking way too long. Anyone counting down?

Should we start getting popcorn and drinks ready for the day we find out?

It's making me crazy. And supposedly they announce it the 29th or 30th. PLEASE let it be the 29th!

Per USFS, June 30 is the announcement date for GP assignments.

I'm not going to look up the USFS link again, but it said June 30 in the press release re Hoffmann Estates as the location of Skate America.

Oh - groan! :bang: Thx for the info.

My prediction, single only

SA : Fernandez, Rippon*
SC : Jin, Chan*
CoR : Hanyu, Kolyada*
TEB : Fernandez, Chan
CoC : Jin*, Kolyada
NHK : Hanyu*, Rippon
* = definite host pick

P.S : SC is actually very close to Cricket Club so there are possibility either Yuzu or Javi would prefer to go there (though Yuzu had been there for 13/14 and 15/16 season so maybe not him again). I doubt NHK would want Chan to be assigned there, probably there will be deal between Feds to arrange this but well anything could happen (But this means Chan going to SC and TEB again for years). Fernandez has never been to SA before, or if he wants to go to CoR (again) Hanyu will do TEB instead.

Ladies :
SA: Pogorilaya, Gold*
SC: Wagner, Radionova
CoR : Medvedeva*, Gold
TEB : Wagner, Miyahara
CoC : Medvedeva, Radionova
NHK : Pogorilaya, Miyahara*
* = host pick

P.S : Not sure if USFSA would go for Wagner + Gold at the same GP, but Gold is a home skater in Chicago + National Champ so I go for her instead of Wagner.

I doubt they would pit Gracie and Ashley against each other, but that might be good for ticket sales. I actually am liking Ashley's chances of getting SA this year because of what she did at Worlds. Especially if Adam gets SA. Might be better for Gracie to not skate at home. i think it is more of a burden for her.

I would think NHK would want the Shibs, so I'm assuming that's going to be their second GP, unless another host gets to pick before the Japanese Fed and chooses them or the Japanese Fed really wants P/C or C/B instead. I can possibly see P/C but not C/B.

Guessing the Shibs will do NHK or Cup of China. They've done one or both every year in seniors. P&C may want NHK as they were signed up for it last season and had to drop out.

Edit: Hmm. I'm rethinking, though, because I was assuming C&B would do SC and Rostelecom and this season that's not possible with them back to back across continents. And P&C aren't likely to do Rostelecom because it's alongside TEB. So . . . maybe the Shibs will go to Russia?

Great I'll find out the GP assignments the day before Free Agency Day for the NHL. Which mean's I'll have two different moods in two consecutive days: excitement and fear.

Hmmm... I suppose now would be a good time to submit my predictions. These are speculations on who I think will get assigned to what event!

LADIES:
Skate America: Ashley Wagner, Elena Radionova
Skate Canada: Anna Pogorilaya, Gracie Gold
Rostelecom:Evgenia Medvedeva, Elena Radionova
Trophee de France: Ashley Wagner, Satoko Miyahara
Cup Of China: Evgenia Medvedeva, Gracie Gold
NHK: Anna Pogorilaya, Satoko Miyahara

I think Russian fed will do their damnest to keep Elena from having to go against Medvedeva, Med being nigh unbeatable and Elena being their second most consistent girl... although other players probably would happily push them together.

I just realized Pogo won't have to go against Med at all, she might qualify for GPF! :hap10:

where does everyone think the Canadian ladies will be placed?

I think either Alaine, Gabby, or Kaetlyn will be at SC. There's NO WAY in the WHOLE UNIVERSE that at LEAST one of the three will NOT be there. If none of them are there, then it's either a mistake or something.

I'd guess Alaine & Kaetlyn at SC. Both are only guaranteed one spot so SC will allow them to have two and Alaine is national champion. Gabby is guaranteed two spots. I think one will be Skate America.

I dunno about Skate Canada for Chock and Bates... I'm guessing both W/P and V/M will be there, and I can't see the Canadian Fed wanting to invite another top team that could jeopardize the Canadians placing 1-2.

I agree with this. The previous year's silver medalist always seems to get Skate America.

Well they'll have to invite either Chock/Bates, Shibutani/Shibutani or Papadakis/Cizeron. Can't really see them inviting Papadakis/Cizeron so It's likely that the American team that doesn't get Skate America will go to Skate Canada which is why Chock/Bates makes sense.

Skate Canada can choose to invite Capelinni/Lanotte or Hubbell/Donohue instead of Weaver/Poje so their Top 2 teams won't have to compete against each other early in the season.

How does invitation process work? I honestly have no idea. Are there rules saying Canada has to invite an American skater/team to their GP competition and vice versa?

They have to invite one of the nr 1-3 seeds (placements from Worlds) and one of the nr 4-6 seeds.

Does Skate Canada automatically get to pick from nr 1-3? There are six GP events. How do they decide which Fed gets to pick first? I know that Skate America and TEB already have teams in 1-3 and SA will most likely use their host pick to choose one of Shib/C/B and TEB will chose P/C, but how is it determined that Skate Canada gets to pick whoever is leftover from the C/B/Shib pick before COC, Rostelecom, and NHK get to pick?
