Hanyu could go ahead with the GP, but withdraw from his first event. With just NHK, he wouldn't make the GPF and would be rested enough to do 4CC.

I know the skaters' preferences are probably respected and taken into account, but I think the Feds would be the one who have the most power and say in determining who get which eventually? Yes, there are rules and draws and all. But like someone here mentioned before, Both Takahashi+Hanyu who medaled at 11/12 worlds was assigned the same 12/13 GP (and Joubert+Amodio too). Host pick will likely trump over skaters' pick.

that leaves USA and JPN for Kolyada---whether he likes it or not

Kolyada could supercede one of those spots with a host pick from Russia. If Russia offered it to him (along with or in place of Kovtun), Kolyada could make that decision. Then state his preference for one of the two events in Asia. But he couldn't "turn down" SA if he was the third seed.

I really don't see any way to reason this one out. If we are discussing his preferences, then why not say that he turned down SC and TEB as well? Did someone ask him specifically about SA? Then the "preferences" interpretation would make sense.


I'm sticking with my theory that sometimes GP selections just defy logic.

Host picks come first, and the Rus Fed has obviously chosen Kolyada and told him so - which is why he is sure about CoR. As for CoC and NHK, he is not assuming anything, he is waiting for a decision by the Fed, and the Fed does get a say. Certain skaters keep magically ending up with the GP events they want even if they are not supposed to have any choice. The possibility of SA was most likely also brought up by the Fed, it must have come up at some point in all the behind-the-scenes bargaining that goes on.

Only the top two seeds can state their preferences and be reasonably assured they will get their choices. The 3rd seed gets whatever events are left after the top two get what they want. The hosts do draw for selection for 1-3 seeds, but will traditionally honor the preferences of the World gold and silver medalists.

When it comes to the 4-6 seeds, the skaters' preferences are not guaranteed or may not even be taken into consideration---it is surprising that Kolyada assumes that he has a say where he will skate. Since the order of host selection is unknown at this point, no host can "offer" an invitation to a seed in this category. It is possible that some US coach or judge asked him at Worlds if he would be interested in competing at SA, but that is not the same thing as being offered an invitation to the event.

I tend to think that - as mentioned by vorravorra - at least some pre-meeting, behind the scenes dealing goes on for the top 6, making the draw and the announcement more a formality for those skaters. That's just speculation on my part, and I perfectly well could be wrong.

It well may be that behind-the-scenes bargaining is going on, and the "offer" of SA to Kolyada a part of the bargaining. But like all bargaining, it all hinges on decisions made by other parties, so really it is all up in the air.

Actually when the GP lists come out, it would be fun to sort of reverse engineer the lists and see how it might have played out based on what we know about the drawing process. It might shed some light on whether there was any bargaining or what not.

That being said...a poster on FSU said that some airlines are doing killer sales to Europe just recently thanks to Brexit...maybe some of you can snag some trips you normally would not as the timing works out well.

Are M/C eligible for one GP event? If someone offers them a GP event that is not SA i think SA should give them the open slot that they will be holding for a US team. It's time for them to finally leave the Junior ranks behind. It's time to push themselves and they can't do that if they stay Junior for yet another season.

McNamara and Carpenter? IIRC, the World Jr. Champs get two events.
