Japan Open 2007

I am shocked about Kimmie being beaten even by Korpi, let alone Rochette. What happened??? And also about Mao. But hurray for Miki! She's proving she's a true champion and not a one-shot wonder.

It depresses me to hear about Alexei coming in almost last, but it's great that he's doing the big jumps again. And is Brian OK? Just tired?

I thought this was a team comp? I guess I was wrong...

But the ladies results...??? what's up with KM finishing *last* out of the six competitors?! wow

At least she seems to know when to fight. This comp doesn't matter in the long term.

The Americans better bring it next year. They're getting left behind. (Also the Europeans, to a certain degree.)

Sort of. Team Japan, 497.47; Team Europe, 471.11; Team North America, 458.81.

YES IT DOES! Every competition counts. When to fight is every time!

shen/zhao

shen & zhao updated their blog and mentioned some tidbits while traveling to Japan.

They met a flight attendant and their fan who saw them live at 2003 world championships in DC. She insisted on upgrading their seat to business class for free!

Lucky!

oh, I guess they combined the scores? Well of course since it's the JAPAN open they'll heavily favor Japan, go figure

As for every competition counting, you'd put as much fight into the World Championships as you would a fluff event like this?

I agree that if you are still in the running for the Grand Prix, Nats, Worlds, and Olys, every competition should be taken seriously, whether it's a "cheesefest" (which this really wasn't) or not. Todd and Alexei are pro now, and I'm sure they didn't expect to win-the fact that they're out there on the ice with Brian, Jeff, and Oda is simply remarkable, and kudos to them! I think they had individual goals, like Alexei's coming back with his jumps-rather than looking to win. I'd personally rather watch Alexei "as is" than any of the eligible guys anyway (tho I certainly wouldn't turn them away either!)

However, I think it will indeed affect the minds of competitors when they don't do well, regardless of what comp it is. I am quite concerned for Kimmie-maybe she was ill or injured? Mao too. We both know these ladies can hold their own or more against some of these competitors-tho they were all lovely and wonderful. You can't take ANYTHING lightly when you're in the eligible ranks. Just my HO.

ITA with Bridget. Each competition I have is the only one I have today (in fact, the only one I have this month).

The time for Kimmie to open up a fresh can of whipass on Mao is every time she sees her! ;)

ITA with your competition philosophy but at this point I think that shipment of whipass fell off the truck somewhere en route to Baltimore. Kimmie better find a new supplier.

And P.S. - she needs it to face Miki as well. : )

Well, not going to put much stock in it. Season's over, there's always next year.

It's just a fluff competition...or, as you guys like to call it, it's just a CHEESEfest.

This I agree with, though. I hope that the skaters can just forget about it and move on, prepare for next season. And doesn't Kim usually have one rough outing per year, anyway? Better it happen here than at Nationals.

That said, I think she's losing her consistency, and that's not a good thing. That's what MADE her, really! (Although Mao is pretty much in the same boat, she has the edge on jumps over Meissner).

The brutal truth: it may soon be time to push her and Emily aside and look for someone else to lead US Figure Skating towards 2010.

Special thanks to Jeff Buttle who performed two programs (Hercules and Clash) at Japan Open GALA to fill the absence of Yu-na Kim:clap:

Both were brilliant. I reall hope Japanese TV would broadcast them all:bow:

I agree RD ... this competition on it's own wouldn't be anything to worry about, but Kimmie's whole season has been less than stellar, IMO. I don't think she's had a clean competition all year, has she? The jumps are what made Kimmie ... without them she is average at best.

I think Meissner will be better in the next season.
She was going through the same stage of physical changes as Ando did a year before. Someone reported that she landed 3F-3Lo in the warmup. She tried that when she popped the flip combo. If she masters it, Kim is definitely out.
IMG and ISU need a new show to sell, and Meissner can be a part of it.

I'm by no means a Kimmie fan, but she is a lot better than most comments I've read on this thread. I can't help but believe that the non fans of Kimmie in any competition are still reeling about her success in Calgary.

I think this competition was fair. It certainly is a cut above anything the United States could put on as a cheesefest.

This is the sort of thing, I would like to see on my Sunday afternoons on TV. Six guys and gals doing a skating routine. They don't have to be all top drawer.

Your stupidity shines again. You should worry about Mao first instead of Kim. Without a 3T and 3S, Mao will likely drop like a stone if her 3A becomes less reliable.

Looking at the list of all the popped jumps and falls, I have to wonder afresh about the effect of the New Judging System on the popularity of figure skating. Do general audiences really want to pay out big bucks to watch these young athletes plowing the ice?

I agree! This sounds like a great show.

Actually, this format was quite simlilar to last years' Campbell's show. In fact, it featured quite a few of the same skaters. It would be cool if they made a series out if it by adding a third event in Europe, then give some kind of big prize to the overall winners.

About top drawer, they didn't have every top skater in the world, but they managed a pretty good representation. They had three of the top four ladies from last years' world championship and the top two men.
