Ladies short program

now what did miki do to place ahead of Caroline? Caroline had a 3/3 beautiful spirals, other two jumps were clean and well done. best spins in the competition. COME ON JUDGES ARE YOU BLIND?

Two things reigning World Champ and pecking order. Some things never change.

Well. You will have MANY people who will disagree with that blanket pronouncement. For one, Mao has never had the spins Caroline has ... and I'm not just talking about the positions ... but the speed as well. This is not a Mao bash, I like her a lot. I just disagree with your premise. Poor Caroline ... onlly 14 and already has bashers! LOL.

Saying someone is not as good as Mao Asada, is not necessarily bashing the skater... Personally, it's not even Caroline I'm bashing as it is the hype that people are putting on Caroline.

Of course, Caroline is the better spinner, but there's more to skating than just spinning. While I think Mao's spirals are amazing now, I will concede perhaps at 14 Caroline was better at spirals. Now, I won't concede that to Caroline because I think Mao's spiral is absolutely breathtaking.

But basic skating wise, Mao is phenomenal skater. (I'm talking over all speed, edge quality etc) And she's the better jumper too, which is where the points are made...Unless, Caroline can improve her jumps,. she's not going to make up all of these things on Mao, unless Mao proves to still be inconsistent.

Yeah you are right. I like Caroline alot, but anyone trying to compare her to Mao at this point is far premature, and then referring to pointing out that she has a ways to go to reach that level as bashing is nonsense.

Yes Mao when she was the same age was even better, while Zhang is still wonderful. This is very obvious despite that I like Zhang. It does not mean things cant change in the future but for a current evaluation that is how it is.

Look, Caroline has talent, but she's not as good as Mao was at Mao's age.
No one was ever as precocious as Mao Asada at a very young age, landing 3F/3Lo/3T combo at 12 and triple Axel at 14.

Can she keep that lead, or will Caroline and others be able to catch up?

I have another thought. Which pair of sisters has the biggest gap in ability, Michelle Kwan to Karen Kwan, or Mao Asada to Mai Asada.

Identical to the hype put on Mao. And the naysayers are out, just like they were with Mao. I don't think being excited about Caroline should immediately incur a "she's not as good as Mao" response.

.

And have you gotten your knickers in a knot over other skaters who have been hyped up, too?

You do nothing but pick on Caroline every time you get the chance. Something tells me that even if she does make an improvement, you certainly won't be the first to crow about it.

It's a pity a 14-year-old can't even get a break.

The one thing I will say about Mao though, is I think that mental toughness may be an issue with her. Someone said that when Mao practices, if she messes up, she tends to make more mistakes in practice.

I do think that Caroline Zhang is mentally tougher than Mao (IMO) from what I've seen. But, I think that Mao at this point and Yu-na can afford some mistakes against Zhang.

Maybe but nonetheless their mistakes cost each the World title to Ando last year.

Well, true... But, Miki last year had a solid 3/3, Right now Caroline's 3/3 seems to be shaky. It's been downgraded twice in international competition. Also overall last year, Miki's, jumps, over all speed were stronger than Caroline's. I'm not that impressed with Miki presentation wise, so I'm not going to say I prefer her, but all of these things do add up and made her more able to capatalize on other's errors.

Yu-na Kim, I'm not sure about...She was inconsistent her first year as a Junior, but she was very consistent her second year in Juniors. Last year, she had all of those injuries, and it was clear that her stamina was affected. But reports are that Yu-na is healthy now and with that boot issue worked out...

Yes, but you can say that about every second place finisher in the history of the world -- if only they hadn't made this mistake, or that... -- or if the other guy had made more...

Well I mean, it's obvious to everyone, that Caroline hasn't nailed down all the jumps that Mao had by the same age.

But so what? A lot of skaters learn some of their jumps a bit past their junior competition career. In fact, the fact that Caroline was able to add a 3-3 to her repertoire very recently shows that she has potential to learn and master new jumps. That's even more important as precocious. Thing is a lot of junior skaters who master tough jumps early on lose em later.

Congratulations to Caroline! That's a great placing and a great score for a first time showing at a senior Grand Prix competition. She has achieved what Mira is still trying to achieve, but sounds like Mira also had a relatively good skate, too. Nevertheless, the judges did not seem to recognize her improvements in poise and skating skills. Must be terribly frustrating for Mira working so hard and not being recognized for her efforts. I feel for her.

Well Caroline's score were the same thing that happened in the men, the new ones don't get high scores, no matter what they do.

And this is why we are having to pay to watch figure skating online.
People don't like to see the best skater held down or the oldest skater held up. It's cheating. People don't enjoy watching what they think is cheating.
Expect less and less tv coverage because of the judges and the system that allows them to cheat. You shouldn't get points for what you have done in the past.

I thought the results so far seemed fair. For whatever reason the technical specialist downgraded Zhang's triple flip apparently. He downgraded Meissner as well. And Hughes, so it wasn't just punish the newbie.

Personally, I thought Meissner was the best one theretonight. \I liked this skate by Caroline, much better than the US vs Japan skate....Do newer skaters get the top PC scores, No. But that's what happens. Skating is a judged sport and reputation plays a role.

But seeing as the last two Ladies Grand Prix finals champions were newbies senior year. Two of last years world medalists were new (and they had the highest PCS in the competition) I think the judges are pretty darn to start giving a deserving skater higher scores.

Every skater has to be the newbie in the beginning, so every skater has to deal with it.
