Ladies' SP

Just curious.. I have seen many recent videos where Kwan, Yamaguchi, Witt and some legendary skaters praising Yu-Na for her technicality and artistry (you can easily find them on youtube) but few about Mao. On the other hand, on the internet forum, I see some fans always complaining about Yu-Na. Why is that there seems to be a huge gap of perspectives between these legendary athlets and fans? Because these fans are experts in CoP but these athletes are still used to 6.0?

Um, because Yuna is the favorite and dominant skater now? Naturally, she will be most talked about and praised by other skaters. There are other skaters who praised Mao just NBC didn't interview them. Irina did a interview with Japanese media and she praised Mao. Also I just heard Lu Chen was on a tv program expressing praise for Mao's performance last night.

Perhaps NBC likes Yu-Na than Mao :P

I am totally surprised there are two American girls in the Final Group. Who would have believed that?

I'm not surprised, they are great competitors and deserved their placements! I even thought Mirai's score should have been a little higher.

great skates from all.
that is alll--good luck to all in long
mirai good
rachel nice showing yourself
yu-na --wow what can i say
mao--great skate --good luck
carolina kostner--good skate keep it up
alena good show
--nice short from all women

I've got to say, I'm shocked at how Miki did.
After her bad showing at JNats - where she looked out of condition and in all honesty should have placed after Kanako - I thought she'd come in here with all her swords drawn. Was it simply nerves of having to skate last?

I was so happy that NBC's commentators were quiet during Joannie's performance and for quite a while afterward. They let the moment stand on its own. That performance will surely go down as one of the great Olympic performances in history and I'm so glad it wasn't ruined with chatter.

I really like all 6 of this final flight and wouldn't mind seeing any of them on the podium. Gotta say I'm pulling particularly for Yu-Na, Joannie, and Mirai.

I think it must have been terribly hard for Miki to skate after the drama of awesome skates by Mao and Yuna and the heartrending skate by Rochette (not to mention her very good score.) Knowing that she had to be perfect to stay in contention for the gold must have weighed heavily on her mind. She's quite fortunate not to have gotten dinged for her 3F. I'm certain the starting order affected her a lot.

I don't think I'm alone in this but I think Yuma's program last night was very lackluster. I've seen her do this program before and it sparkled; not last night. She was slow and somewht detached. Her spins are slow and her spiral is terrible. Now, I sound like I don't like her skating but I do. I just find that she is not the "be all end all" phenomenon that she is tounted to be. In comparing the overall performance with Mao: I find Mao to be more graceful, and musical (with the music beat) and her spirals are to die for. She does not get credit for what she does in ccomparison to Yuna.

They did us proud. I wonder what Sasha is thinking. For all her talk, I really can't have seen her placing higher than they did.

although I dont feel satisfied with the result,
I am very happy to hear that Japanese ladies were satisfied with their performance.

mao said: usually i think there are 10 point diffrences between yu-na and me in the SP , so i am very happay that there are 5 points difrence. so i think i can win.

and ando said: i am proud of myself because I could tried 3lz3lo.

They are so great skaters!!!

I hope they will skate good and show us their smiles. and I want them to get a medal
(sorry for canadians and koreans. but forgive me.)

actually I am half japanese and taiwanese, i am really happy that chinese pairs could get 2 medals.

and so i want to be more happy to see 2 Japanese ladies get 2 medals.

As figure skating fans, it really should not matter whether winner should be japanese, chinese, korean or canadian or whatever nationality. I love figure skating, I want to see good performances from these fantastic skaters. And no matter what nationality, we should want the best to win.

There were some interesting though not flattering remarks of German Eurosport commentator Hendryk Schamberger about Rachel Flatt. He said that " for years and years we were used to the US Ladies championne being very special. This changed only in the last years, when they still are great on junior level, but when they should develop to senior standards, they just show up for a year or two, and then the next unfinished girl comes along. He criticised Flatts jumping style (something about her free leg) and said her all-over appearance is boring. He didn't say that in favour of any other skater, because he pointed out Mikis URs and Carolinas mistake as well.
Sigi Heinrich had tears in his voice after Joannies skate. He said he feels so incredibly sorry for her and that he can't imagine how she was able to put her concentration together. Said he hopes she can keep it together for the LP.

I was so happy for the top three that I forgot my sadness for Miki. I also want her to medal here, for the same reason, but I'm so emotionaly-attached to the top three girls. Yu-na, what can I say, she brought me back to figure skating after a long hiatus following MK's retirement. Mao, Mighty Mao, I love her for all the qualities TAT's choreography and coaching method kill, and I was upset with her for letting her go through such a terrible year with no full-time coach, music that drowns her elegance and an intense focus on the 3A. But I've come to accept and love Mao even more because she is so unremitting, and I wish her the best of luck with her ways (so she can prove all the "Mighty Mao has fallen" threads wrong. I think she already has with a redeeming skate at Vancouver ). Joannie... there are no words to describe the sorrow and admiration I feel for her. I wish ther was room for Miki, but the podium has only three spots... but I still want her up there ;(

well said, these top three are going to give us a performance in LP. For Joanne, my mom and I cried on the phone after Joanne's skate. I have to tell you we have never ever done that. We are not normally emotional and we don't cry in front of each other. But that was just too much. We both said at the same time, how Joanne's mother was there for her. This will be a memory for my mom and I too. We have gone all over the world watching figure skating together, this is how we vacation together, but we have never experieneced anything like that. We just normally talk about what we think of the performances or venues or music or costume. This was just EXTRAORDINARY.

Coming out of my lurking role to commend the ladies for a terrific three hours of (overall) good skating! Not going into a detailed review as it's all be said. But I am still curious to how Miki finished as high as she did. She is such a sloppy skater. Even her jumps last night looked messy. There aren't alot of ladies who have her usual consistency but, according to how they skated last night, I would have given both Americans the nod. At least their form and lines are neat and clean. And don't get into a UR debate with me because Miki was forgiven MUCH as well. And Kostner should NOT have gotten over 60 points with her skate. She's brilliant when on (though she's always ackward-looking, IMO) but she was sloppy too. I don't know. That's figure skating, I suppose!

I'm satisfied with the top three. I think Yuna has a bit too much of a lead but that's mainly because I like to keep things interesting and no one wants to see a for-gone conclusion. Also, no one wants to see someone have a splatfest in the lp stand atop the podium no matter how brilliant the sp was. I don't see that happening, but the system certainly creates the possibility.

Mao's music choices leave me cold. She has just as much personality and star power as Yuna but I don't think she's been choosing the right vehicles as of late. Inspite of the icky music she chooses she still manages to catch my interest but I have to give the edge to Yuna in the presentation department. I really like both skaters and am so glad both were "on" last night.

And I am an unashamedly-biased Canadian fan so, of course, I though Joannie was stunning and totally deserved being scored over 70 and is in contention for a silver medal. :D

I totally agree with you Fruit Loops. You should come out of lurking more often. :)

I think Mirai is special, in a year or two I think she will be a potential world medalist. As for Rachael, I think in the LP she is pretty boring but I actually like her SP quite a bit. She is a good jumper and shows a lot of personality and energy in that program and her footwork sequence is great. I think the thing with Rachael is that she's not the best in any area, as many ladies have bigger jumps, better spins, better edging, more flexible spirals, more speed, etc. But Rachael doesn't really have any real weaknesses in her skating either and that's why she thrives under CoP. I'm glad she did so well this season and here because who knows if she will be able to maintain this level in her skating once she goes to Stanford to study science next year, especially with Nagasu and Gao on the rise.

Poor Miki. She wants it so badly. I hope she doesn't pull a K&S and bomb the LP.

I think she will rock the LP! Most likely she will still end up 4th but I think she's in it to win it. She is more of a LP skater.

What do people think Suzuki will place here? I know she's in 11th now do you think she might pull up into the top 6 where the points are close?

I agree. Skating last must have been nerve wrecking.
She looked somewhat uncomfortable and labored, almost tired even before she did any jumps last night.
Hopefully she will fare better tomorrow, seeing as she's up second in the last group before any of the top three.

Mao musical????
She certainly skated well last night, and I was very proud of her for that, but in my opinion she didn't relate to her music AT ALL in the first half until all her hard jumps were done cleanly.
She looked very nervous out of the gate, and the lack of any expression at the beginning looked quite odd to me considering her music was being played with much drama.

Then after a while, it was obvious that the relief took over and she was able to display more emotion and the best quality in her skating, which (I think) is that light, airy, sophisticated feel of her every movement.

As for Yuna, I don't know where you get "very" lackluster.
Maybe it wasn't the best you've seen of her in comparison to her past performances, but very lackluster??
First and foremost I was so impressed with her total calmness, poise, and control, skating right after Mao.
I didn't sense a hint of panic in her face or in her skating. She skated confidently and so comfortably.
It was just another day in the office for her.

And although I myself have problem appreciating the high scores she gets for her spins and spirals especially, when all these praises from the past champions and skating experts keep pouring in, she must really possess that special rare quality only seen once in a while.

I never saw anything special in Sarah Hughes' skating, even that Olympic winning free, but many experts disagreed with me. :D
But with Yuna, I can see where they are coming from.

I can't imagine anyone watching that without tears. It is a good think she did not skate to sad music or she and everyone would have completly broken down halfway through.
