Marin Honda moves to Rafael Arutunian

I remember at some point Marin said that out of all of her potential rivals, her youngest sister Sara frightens her most lol. And Sara says she considers Marin her role model and rival who she wants to surpass someday. It’s a very cute and sweet sibling rivalry.

I think she also said she will voluntarily retire before Sara competes with her.

A little surprising news to me but it was reported Marin changed the school to Aomori yamada high school. It is in Aomori prefecture of Tohoku area and very famous for Japanese top athletes studying there.

Marin will go to USA in April and that's is for sure, and changing school is one of the preparations for that. The article doesn't say the details beside the name of high school she had transferred, but Aomori yamada allows the athletes to train abroad so perhaps that was the reason she picked up that school. (I was surprised just because she chose the school in Tohoku, I had not expected that was coming )

That school offers online courses. I believe Marin will start taking online courses now and that’s the reason she transfers to there.

Ive seen Sara skate recently via utube, and I think this roots frm family love to be honest haha...

Sara is good, but Ive seen better novice skaters with much better skating skills and jump difficulty (Sophia Akatieva, Anna Scherbakova).

It's very sweet how much Sara is loved by her older siblings. When they were younger, they let Sara win their games so she doesn't throw a fit.
Sara could be a stronger skater in the future, only time will tell.

I felt uncomfortable that Sara was in many tv shows and cm cuz I wnted her to concentrate on jst skating . Her results at novice level isnt that good. Im not a hater. I jst didnt understand why the honda sisters got sooo much media exposure when actual novice national champions had almost zero in Japan.

figure skating and tv/movie are separate businesses that work differently. the hondas work on both. Is it good or bad? bad for us fs fans because we want them to focus only on skating business, but likely for their family doing both businesses is good.

Yeah maybe. But I kind of stopped caring too much. I jst wnt Japanese media making documentaries on National Novice gold medalists too. They get very little media coverage. I dnt even knw who won last yrs National Novice.

Where as Ive seen like 4 documentaries on Honda sisters. 0 documentaries for actual novice and jr gold medalists? I sometimes got mad as a skating fan haha

Sara wasn't in any shows that I'm aware of. She appeared in a couple of promo videos and skating events, but not nearly as many as her sister Miyu (I think it's Miyu you had in mind..?).

As far as concentrating on the skating - well, to speak frankly, Japan has just 3 spots for Worlds/Olympics and there are many talented skaters out there. It's risky to sacrifice everything for a sport that doesn't even pay that much unil one goes pro (as most of the profits are consumed by the federation, never mind the fact that ice time, coaching, choreo and costumes/boots are very expensive). Acting is a more secure job, and it doesn't seem to me like it's going to Miyu's head. She's quite humble and very media-savvy; she does commentary for local FS events and seems as well-spoken as any seasoned commentator.

...Sara won the Novice championship in the B category (she's not age-eligible for Novice A yet), so any exposure she got was well-deserved

As for Miyu, well, if Amandla Stenberg (or any other famous young actress) took part in National Championships, she'd make the news as well even if she didn't make the podium. Especially if she were a sister to the World Junior Champion and Novice National Champion...

I think you're still talking about Miyu, the child actress..? Sara was just 10 years old at the time of her most recent competition, so I see no point comparing her to 12- and 14-year olds. Still, for her age, she is very promising. It's not just Marin who praised her - as far as 2 years ago Sara's coach said she is a skater with great potential for the future, and she learns jumps faster than Marin did.

im talking about Taiku Tv. The one with Plushenko as guest. Sara sometimes stars in it too. Anyway im not attackin Honda sisters. But ive seen many anti thread set up cuz of Oscar Production or something trying to market Honda sisters to Japan.

But now? Honda sisters dominate figure skating news, get 1 hr documentaries on their skating progress while actual podium medalists have almost nonexistent presence in the media in comparison. Is this normal when it is a sports? Its damaging to skaters who actually pour everything and focus solely on skating.

All im saying is that I too share the japanese public view that honda sisters are taking too much attention for themselves whilst actual gold medalists and novice skaters who won multiple gold medals or silver medals have less than a quarter of public support or exposure, because mostly lets be honest, honda sisters r prettier.

So i am not an antifan. I was one of marins first fans.


Then it changed. Slowly I too was a bit salty about what I said above.

Marin was falling frm the top.
As a fan I liked her but I realized she had motivation issues.


Then Japanese media swarmed her with commercials and documentaries whilst Kaori, Rika and Satoko got less than half the media coverage of Honda sisters.

I wnted to knw more about Kaori and other rising skaters who were working their butts off. But everytime I tried finding vids of them in news and programs it would center on Honda sisters. And hence I became a semi fan slash objective supporter.

Hm, what country has any TV coverage for a novice competition in any sport, though? Winning a novice championship in itself is just not really newsworthy for the mainstream media. If Sara didn‘t compete, there would been no covarage of the winner, still. They only reported on Sara because she was famous before and the documentary is about her foremost and not the competition. You could even say Sara brought some attention to the competition, at least, that would have gone completely under the radar if not for her.

Well the thing with the media exposure is with the Hondas are that:

a) Miyu is an actress, so she would natural get more attention than most figure skaters her age in her competitions.

b) Marin is a former (2016) world junior champion at the age of 15. She is also the only non-Russian female skater to win junior worlds since Kanako Murakami in 2010, which is 8 years ago, or an eternity in figure skating. It also doesn't hurt to be one of the more popular female athlete in Japan.

The thing is in the TV industry, the only thing that matters is what drives ratings, and advertisement. An 1 hour documentary about the Hondas or Marin's season will definitely drive ratings, advertisements and sponsors.

Now, the question is will the media coverage on Marin be similar this year now that she is in the US rather than in Japan.

If you search yuzuru hanyu on youtube u can find many many interviews and coverages on him at primary school etc when he was competing novice and jr level.


Same with Mao.


In the case of yuzu and mao, or that generation skaters would get recognized for their talent, not because of star power or celebrity family.


Let me assure you i have nothing against honda sisters, rather I am criticizin Japanese media for taking a portion of the pie (not giving other more talented and yes, skaters with better skills, results and more international competition medals the same or a fraction of the spotlight).
