Marshall's Results so far

Sad for both Johnny and Andrei (though the latter may still be injured); great for Evan.

Soooo excited for Irina! This season, she has already beaten her three major competitors -- Michelle, Sasha, and Shizuka. Not bad for some one who was written off as a has-been!

I don't think she was ever written off or considered a has been. Just the seriousness of her illness created doubt and worry for her as an athlete. She has been amazing so far, but there is always a nagging worry at the back of my mind. What if her health problems resurface? That is the only reason I don't see her as a favorite at worlds, but I will be absolutely thrilled if she wins the gold there.

I think this just shows how much interest Michelle and Sasha have in these cheesefests.

Joe

Considering that they have not performed in a competition of any kind since Campbell's I had expected them to be ready for this one. However, it is possible that Sasha's missing boots and Michelle's 'work in progress' may have caused the problems I am reading about. This was a good opportunity before the nationals to get the programs nearly ready. I am sure at USN we will see a whole lot different Michelle and Sasha.

Really? Is that why she had the head of the ISU technical committee come to Lake Arrowhead to dissect her program under COP? Is that why she asked Morosov to rework her spins and footwork in order to maximize her points for COP, and is that why Morosov and her took a piece of paper and added all the potential points she could garner?
I love all the mind readers here.

No one is reading any minds here. She said this HERSELF.

Hmm, that's strange, I seemed to remember the name of the head of ISU Technical Committe was quoted in the article (someone corrects me please if I'm wrong). I would expect this person would have come out and denied what Michelle said by now if she had made this all up.

Are you cetain that her boot wasn't lost with the rest of her luggage?
.

I am sure that the boots were lost, but I was making a point that most skaters are a bit better prepared. They know that airlines lose luggage all the time, and they carry the boots in the carry on, and put the blades in the check in luggage. New blades are easier to deal with if they have to install a new pair.

I think Jenny was next. She skated a wonderful program - and falls into the wuz robbed category. I definitely had her above Sasha - she fell once on a 3 sal, but everything else was picture perfect. I was shocked when her ordinals came up in 3rd place. (To be honest, I'd have put her above Michelle, even with the fall, based on her choreography, which was much more difficult.)

Now that I've seen the programs on tv, I'm just wondering if we saw the same thing. Jenny's program was a bunch of posing and nothing really interesting while Kwan's was full of difficulty...at least compared to Kirk's, despite it not being performed as well as it could have.

While I am a big fan of Plushenko, love his skating, always have, I wish to goodness that he would get a different choreographer........he reminds me so much of Urmanov in his frantic arm and leg moves. He is such a marvelous skater........but not the whole package yet. He deserves better!!! 42

Evgeni has a different choreogpraher, actually he has different ones since 2002, his choreographer for this year is Sergei Petukhov (who also choreographs for D&S and Pet&Tik)

I thought Jenny Kirk's program had spirit and class, plus she only fell down once. Naturally she is not Michelle -- who is? -- but still I think this was her best outing this year. To me, the third place on the U.S. world team is still Jenny's to lose.

The crowd at the Palace really booed Jenny's low marks, BTW, and also Angela's.

On tv, things are really different than in real life. You don't feel the emotion, the energy. On tv, I thought Weir should have beaten Joubert, but there I felt that Joubert was better (even though he was, technically, worse). MK was not good - at least not when compared to her standards. She may have looked good on camera, but in person she wasn't that good. She lacked the fire that I've seen in her in person. Jenny was technically superior and got the crowd into her performance . Kwan's presentation was lackluster, and she struggled with her new choreography. Last year it took 10 minutes for the crowd to calm down after she skated. This year, it took no longer than it did for anyone else. Maybe I expect too much out of Kwan - because, after all she has won all those titles, and when I saw her in person (for the first time) last year she literally lit up the entire state with her performance. If a Jenny Kirk can skate her heart out while being technically better, then more power to her! IMO, she should have placed higher than "the names", (Kwan and Cohen) but that's a flaw of the 6.0 system. That doesn't mean Kwan or Cohen are on their way out or washed up. It just means they didn't have steller performances. It happens to every skater.

You are basically comparing Kwan to her own standard. IMO, from what I saw on tv, choreography-wise...Kirk's program had nothing on Kwan's in terms of real in-betweens and difficulty. Whether or not Kirk lit up the arena has nothing to do with that IMO. I also thought Kirk deserved her 4th place behind Cohen because Kirk's skating and program really wasn't up to their level, and most of her jumps were so cheated that they would have been downgraded to doubles.

I don't know...I think even with a fall I would put Kirk in 3rd ahead of Cohen. Cohen really struggled that day and should have been 4th. They didn't show Alissa so I don't know if Nikodinov should have been placed ahead of her or not.

I was thinking that this thread has been mostly used for criticisms of the new judging system. I will start a new thread that can talk about it and if you want you can post your ideas there. It just seems that there should be another place for these kind of thoughts.

Marshalls was judged under the old 6.0 system.

But any way you slice it, figure skating is a judged sport. The winner will be the person that the judges liked best. That's what "judged" means.

Thanks Ximena........well that explains a lot. I don't care for the skating of D and S or Pet and Tik, for that matter. He still needs a different choreographer..... :p 42

Alissa skated a nice program, but it didn't have the polish that the higher placed skaters had (she is one to watch for the future, though). Add that to her technical problems, and I think she was placed correctly. Ditto for Nikodinov. The crowd really seemed to like her - personally, I did not. I thought she was very blah in her presentation, and with her missing so many elements (she didn't look like she was even trying to complete/and or save them) there is no way I would have put her in any place but last. Alissa had the spark that Nikodinov was missing.

I like Plushy the way he is. Of course I want him to get better, but he is not Urmanov, who was mainly a technical skater. EP's movements are very controlled, even when he seems to be flying off the ice, and he absolutely commands the ice. He has the best audience connection of all the male skaters today (another thing that was missing in Urmanov's skating). He is already a whole package, and he is going to get even better if he somehow gets over his injuries. He is winning competitions and audiences, so I see no reason for him to change choreographers.
