Men - Free Program

Not to worry, iloveaxel - there's a red-headed jumping boy coming up for you. Just let "weloveartistry" types enjoy Patrick and you enjoy your axels. ;)

Is Patrick Chan another Jeffrey Buttle in the making? Is he molded in a typical Canadian way? No jumps, no consistency, all are dependent on better choreography, and high PCS?

It does seem that way. The jr worlds resemble the 4CC between Even and Jeffrey. Patrick is also working hard on his triple axel.

I'm very skeptic that Patrick Chan will ever get a reliable 3A. His jumps are not high. How many current top Sr. Canadian skaters really have a reliable 3A anyway.

It's so strange since Canada produced so many jump machines in the past. These days, they don't have 3A, let alone quad.

Was that last bit a question or a comment? I can never tell when people are omitting a question mark by accident or making a statement phrased like a question. :)

I think Chan will prove you wrong. Lots of fs observers were declaring him a lost cause after Canadian Nats because of his inconsistency, but I think he's way more consistent than the past. And he's so great to watch :)

I wouldn't count out Chan's triple axel, he landed a GORGEOUS one on the 5 minute warm up before the long at Nationals. You also have to remember that he just turned 16! He still has plenty of time to develop consistent jumping, especially considering the fact that he already has the artistic part down.

No. I am not counting him out. Nobody should count out a 16-year-old. But I'm just not convinced that he's the NEXT big one as many Canadian commentators constantly hyped on the TV screen.

 :party2: I'll be over in the corner jumping up and down and screaming for a while. For joy, people. I've been beside myself waiting for results and Stephen pulled it off!

Fair enough. I hate over-hype as well, and I definitely don't think Chan is a lock for the next "one". We have so many talented skaters coming up in the ranks that haven't reached their potential, that it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Our men kind of remind me of the American women in that way, so many young, talented skaters!:)

If you can't do big jumps, do choreography and politics. Chan can be a good heir of Buttle. But a man without 3A shouldn't be on the podium of this level.

I sort of agree with you. I loathe skater who has no basic jump content but only depends on good choreography and high PCS to get on the podium.

I mean, I can enjoy Buttle and Chan's performances, but it really irks me a lot when they can get on the podium without hitting 3A which is a 'MUST' for men.Come on, 5- 10 years ago, how many men were doing quads, and now these so-called world class skaters can't even manage a reliable 3A???

Give me a break. I certainly don't want Buttle to medal if he can't hit at least 3A.

Thank you Rosaleen for all your reports! Lots of hard work and it's very much appreciated!

Congrats to Stephen!

Hear Hear!!

I honestly do not know how you do it Rosaleen, but we all appreciate it very, very much. :)

Is that Buttle's fault or the other skaters fault for not improving their program components. Yout almost hating on the skater.

I can agree with you if we could just get rid of the music and line them up like the Diving competitions. Seriously, I mean that. I cringe when I see elements without any sense of musicality,. Bring on the jumps, only!

Joe

You have to require some basic jumps, otherwise, this should not even be considered a sport.

I just Patrick Chan's free skate protocols, his jump content is even worse than I originally thought.

3f+3t,
2A
3lutz
3lutz<(downgraded, fell)
3loop
2A
3S+2T
3T.

Except a 3f+3t, his jump layout is easier than Caroline Zhang who repeated 3flip and 3lutz twice. At GP event, Patrick Chan tried 3A, and his last jump was a 3f.
At Jr. Worlds, he did not even attempt 3A, and only did 3flip once. This was beyond pathetic for a Jr. world silver medalist when all other top guns were doing 3A, quad etc.

I think it would in up being more like gymnastics. First will have combination spin. The next event would be straightline footwork. Third event combination jumps. Last exercise will be quad jump.

Why not? How serious does any fan take the music?

I'm not disagreeing but do you think we should throw out spins? Lifts? Twizzles, too? That's what I think would make it a better sport. We could have a jump competition with fs jumping, and barrel jumping, adding a new barrel to the lineup each time there are remaining contestants.
