Mirai Nagasu

Here is Mirai's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60Cr2TmHhG4

It's a fine song and all and I get that the lyrics are literally all but written for/about her, but I feel like this is just way too dull and sappy. It was fine when she did Demons as a way of conveying all that she's been through, but I really think now she needs to move on, reinvent herself, and project a new image on the ice.

How are the judges going to trust her and believe that she's a new skater back at the top of her game when her program is a constant reminder of her past troubles? Do you really want something that makes you cry every day? I think we're all past crying for Mirai at this point and are now just hoping for something new.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but Avatar sounded like a much better option - fresh, unique, and interesting. Oh Tom, what even is iconic anymore? Certainly not this song...

I see your point about Mirai needing to move on from 2014 but I have faith that David knows what he's doing - I really love his programs and he's very good at playing to a skater's strengths and personality. I will reserve judgement until we see it.

I kind of wish that Mirai was skating to the ABBA version, but I know that would give a different feel to the program. I was hoping for something a little different as well, a lot of it will depend on the choreography and Mirai emoting the program, which she's struggled with in the past (though I thought she did a nice job with the Demons sp, especially at worlds. I just have always thought that Mirai did better with the "smiley" programs than the ones that require drama face).

In terms of the song applying so much to her life..yes, it's relevant and Mirai can relate to it (and David Wilson and ice network obviously saw the connection to her life), but I think this is a song that could apply to a lot of skaters, or just to figure skating in general. So much goes in to it, yet at the end, the winner takes it all. I liked it better when I thought of it in that respect. I do always get nervous about music where the lyrics literally reference a fall. I love that she is working with new choreographers this season! I wonder what kind of shape these programs will be by Skate Detroit, since it sounds like she had a later start than usual this season in terms of the programs coming together.

i couldn't be happier about the music choice for FS!!!!!!
it's so perfect for her.
thank god it wasn't Avatar mess.

Thanks for the link. I will add it to the OP and look out for part 2.

So we know her FS music is "The Winner Takes it All" and is choreographed by David Wilson - sounds like a winner to me!

Jeff Buttle is doing her short but we don't know what it will be. Happy she is working with David and Jeff, seems like almost all the top skaters are working with them. Toronto is the hotbed of figure skating choreo!

I've been sidelined by the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials - this is AWESOME news!! Wilson and Buttle are both terrific choreographers! I can't wait to see what they each come up with respectively for Mirai! I love her music choices but I do wish she'd used ABBA's version of "The Winner Takes It ALL". No other version can top it!

Still catching up - only just found out 2 GP spots for Mirai! YAY! Here's hoping for a terrific season for Mirai!

This is the dress from her FS at Nebelhorn Trophy last season; so i assume, there'll be a new one for this program :)

Someone uploaded Mirai's SP! A bit of a rough skate (understandable since it's still early), but once she irons out the kinks, I think it will be a very beautiful program for her. :luv17: And I love her dress!

Oh I love this program. Obviously she needs to polish it, but it will be so beautiful when it's competition ready. Love the running steps near the end. Can't wait to see her perform it at Skate Canada.

She is the queen of beautiful costumes, so I'm sure she'll have something amazing -- although I like that costume she is wearing!

I liked this. Loads more transitions/nuances than last year. For July that was pretty good. I think she has something here that could really work well for her this season.

I think both her free and her short are a huge huge step up choreographically from anything she's done really since the 2010 Olympics. Definitely a good decision to work with David Wilson!

Love the programs as well. Transitions in the FS look great! Must be that extra funding from being on the Team A envelope this year that got her to work with David Wilson. Kinda missing her beautiful Ina Bauer and spread eagle moves though, she does them so well!

Ditto on loving the new programs and good job to David Wilson on choreographing! I always adored the Chopin SP music, was a bit skeptical about her LP music, but it seems to suit Mirai's style of skating well. Can't wait to see her in top form this coming season!
