Nordic skating (FIN, SWE, NOR, DEN, ISL)

Janna competed in JGP so she can’t be picked for GP. You can’t do both in the same season
Janna did not compete JGP this season, she has competed lnly kn seniors. Iida, Nella Pelkonen and Rosa Reponen where the girls who competed in JGP. All of them had two spots and Finland had no more.

Linnea had withdrawn from Riga FS because of migraine attack. Hope her back is ok. She one of those skaters, who skate at their best in big competitions.

Is Janna eligible to get a spot, if somebody withdraws? There are some rules for host spots also, aren't there? There have been in senior GP series skaters when they have skated at juniors previous season, so the world ranking is the point, isn't?
I think she is eligible, host country skaters are exceptions IMO but have a look at the selection criteria for 2022/23 season here: https://www.isu.org/figure-skating/events/grand-prix-of-figure-skating

Good weekend for the Nordic ladies!

Mia Caroline Risa Gomez won silver in her international senior debut at Denkova-Staviski cup in Bulgaria. She got the EC minimum in both the SP and FS with good margin, and she was really close to the WC minimum. In the SP she did fall on her combo (it was actually two hands down but it counted as fall), and was 4th after the SP. She also got a time deduction for reasons I don´t understand. She scored 29,88 in TES, 51.25 in total, and she probably would have got the minimum if it wasn´t for the combo mistake.

Mia won the free skate with good margin, scoring 105,26 that is also a new personal best in the FS and a new Norwegian free skate record for ladies. She did actually make two major mistakes, she doubled her flip and popped her loop. If she hadn´t popped one of those jumps, she would have most likely gotten the WC minimum and won the competition, her TES score was 52,98, it would have been enough if it was last season. Her total score was 156,61, a new personal best. The winner, Alexandra Feigin, scored 157,76, she had a 7 points lead from the SP.

All though I wished she got the WC minimum as well, her international senior debut was more than I dared hope for. With the performance she had today and the performance at the last domestic competition, Mia got a strong hand on that EC spot. Linnea Kilsand will compete for the first time next weekend this season, but her PB is 149, and she has been injured and out for a long time, so it will be very difficult for Linnea to top Mias two recent competition, but it´s not impossible.

Mia is going to Open Andorra in 2 weeks and Santa Claus Cup in December. If she gets the EC spot as well she will still have at least 3 more chances to take the WC minimum. Her senior debut should really give her a lot of confidence, and she now has the minimum that is the most urgent, so she might feel less pressure in her next competition.

Qualification competition 2 for Finnish nationals will be hold next weekend - so lot's of skating. What I paid attention to was to details: Matias Lindfors goes for seniors. First ever senior competition for him. And second one, which made me happy: Milania Väänänen and his new partner Filippo Clerici are taking part in pairs! Much figure skating, I have access also to these games, but don't have time to watch all, but for sure I try to watch the pairs. 43 junior women again, some are the same as last time. Rules allow skaters to take part in both, also in case when they have secured their spot already. I am delighful to see there is 6 junior men, that is a lot in Finland, and there are some who did not take part in comp1.

Finland's qualification for nat's is hold this weekend. Today was SP day Milania and Filippo competed in pairs, their first competition. Only douple twist and a little bit slow, but they did everything clean. I am impressed. They got 50.30 maybe a little bit national addition and I am not sure how used Finnish judges are to evaluate pairs, but skating clean in first competition ever together is great.

HIppJIa8R1J4jgsiio-aL4hVVmcZK0w1d0Fy10Vuux_edYqqjG-dEcim9Ifg3VlATJ2QyDn5KOAq5eNJ-NeqOvjk4Bl3ungkZxqdKa97Esb3f8TFMoJgdq3WBPfIXSNqwWrWiayn-xoL-SRJF01NToYvSrdISEL6YAO9Vm43CtCGY8glhbQ-82-tJR1Ciw

In men Matias Lindfors is leading, I am not surprised, but maybe surprised that Makar S. and Arttu Juusola has disaster skates.

In juniors and women weren't any big surprises. Tomorrow is another day. I am going to watch men and pairs, maybe some highlights from the other disciplines.

FS results from qualification for Finland's nationals:

Pairs: V/C were not as good in FS as in SP, many tiny mistakes and two falls by Milania. It seemed they ended a little bit after music again, but did not get deduction. I also had a feeling Filippo needs more strength for lifts. They had some good moments also and their timing together was very good in the beginning. I have no idea when they are allowed to compete internationally, but they should be able to get the TES for big competitions later, not impossibile tought at all. This was just the first competition for them together.

Juniors: In men nothing special. Rosa Reponen, who already took part in JGP, won with huge marginal. Did not watch it, but saw the results. Iida Karhunen WD. As she medalled last year, she has spot anyway. I hope there is no serious reason for that. During first qualification I think she had JGP or some other international competition.

Senior women: Olivia Lisko was clear winner. Nobody skated clean, if not falls, then pops or other mistakes in jumps, also in other elements. Olivia had one fall, but otherwise she was clean. I think she should have done combination when she felt, but she replaced it later by putting an extra double jump later.

Senior men: Nobody clean either. Matias Lindfors won, was 2nd in FS but with marginal from SP. He was visible tired after his skate. He stayed on his feet, but quite many jumps got negative goes and one pop.

If you are interested, results: https://www.figureskatingresults.fi/results/2223/YLSMJUNSEN2vk/index.htm

National will be hold 16th-18th December. I do not remember the rules who qualify, only that last year's medalists have a spot if they take part in same discipline. So if juniors turn to seniors, then they must go trough qualification.

congrats to Andreas Nordebak for his silver at IceChallenge. sadly things don't look very good for Nikolaj Majorov

Nikolaj looked like his back was killing him. At Finlandia, his skating seemed off, but I thought perhaps he was just a bit rusty and feeling the competition from Nordebäck. But he was visibly in pain after the FS yesterday.

I feel bad for him, unlucky guy, and disappointed because I wanted a close race for the EC spot...

Andreas collecting podiums :cheer:

if he's injured i hope he gets better as soon as possible!

Nikolaj has GP spot in Espoo. I hope he is ok and it is only something temporary, but back pain is often bad sign. As Andreas has competed already in JGP, so he can not replace Nikolaj. Otherwise he could have been a possible substituent, couldn't he? I really hope N. is ok, but I really hope skaters don't risk their healthy. This is the only GP spot for Nikolaj this season, if I remember right. I that case I am afraid temptation to come can sometimes win the not so good feelings of healthy.

My secret wish - which I write here public - is that while there is at the moment I write this free spot in pairs, the Swedish pair will get it. I checked and they live in USA, but there is time, not much, though. I think we will see soon will get it. I have not noticed them much before, but liked them in Skate America. So far Nikolaj and the Finns - women 3, men 1 and dance 2 are the only Nordic skaters here. There are not more eligible ones, either, I think, but only Crafoords in pairs.

I am a little bit confused as the have listed high school students Nella P. and Makar S. (I don't know what the explanation in English really is, because some say high school, some say college, ISU page says high school and some dictionaries say upper secondary school) to Universiade, but I am quite sure they are not university students or students in any university of applied science yet. Anyway, the list will updated and lot of names are still missing because so many skaters have not even started the season yet. So there will be changes and corrections to list many times before final selections. They are humans who update it anyway. But selection is easy, the skater or pair on the top of each competition on the day selection is made, will get the spot. Selection for EC will be done soon after nationals in December.
As season has gone forward, this starts to be close, and there are still many more skaters who definitely are not university students, making me more confused, I think there are two possible reasons:

1. The person, who updates the list, has not been told accurate the rules and that person puts every skater whose age is between the required limit on the list
2. They put every 17-25 years old skater on the list, in case they get a place at university ore more likely at a university of applied sciences in the beginning of 2023, is it possible?

But I think more likely is the reason 1. Reasons why I think so are: 1. There are some, mostly universities of applied sciences, which start in the beginning of year, but it is quite rare. Majority of students in Finland start in August or September. 2. Those who are at "lukio", "gymnasiet" in Swedish, I decided to call it college, because it may the nearest. How you translate it in other Nordic countries, where the shcool system is quite similar? Students cannot get a place in university before their have finished secondary degree studies - Finnish expression for "lukio" and vocational school - after high school. Some of them on list are so young, they just cannot be possible uni students in January, as in Finland is very rare and often impossible to start university students at the age of 17. In some cases children have started shcool earlier than usually, go through second degree fast and in that case it could be possible. But athletes usually use their time in secondary degree more than others.

Anyway I am sure there will be a meeting before selection and then they must select skaters who fill the rules reagrdless of the list. In women there are always some, I am not sure if there is men. Lauri Lankila outside of the national could be, because according to isu profile he is marked as a student and he seems to live in Tampere today, it is a big student city from Finnish perspective. He lived in a small town before. I found out Linnea C. is a student, but the school where is studying right now is not an university level school. I have no idea what Oona's or Jenni's situation is but I am quite sure Emmi is not a student at all at the moment. Finland has sent often somebody outside from national team, if there is no eligible skater in national team. On the list is only skaters who have taken part in two competitions this season, so it will be updated all the time.

They are on the Warsaw cup entry list one week before Espoo. Would be great experience for them to get another GP spot(if it's still free?). They need to compete after being away for so long.

So Emmi had WD from Warsaw, but I am not worried. My guess is she wants to concentrate to GP and not to risk her health as she has competed only once this season.

Finland will have eight senior men in nationals if nobody withdraws. I am not sure if there has ever been so many. The TES level is not high, but this year medalists must do more than just appear in place. Some year ago VV was the only competitor in men.

So it seems Nikolaj is having some real back issues. Yesterday he posted on his story that he was at Stockholm spine center? or something, with only these emojis 🤞🤞. So he is getting checked and hope for good news. He hasn´t updated anything afterwards.

Mia Caroline just won the senior ladies event at Open D´Andorra. It was a rather weak field with a few unknown (for me) Spanish skaters so I was also expecting her to win this time. It was a bit sad that Maria Seniuk from ISR WD because it would have made the competition a bit more exciting. Unfortunately there wasn´t enough skaters to give WS points so Mia didn´t benefit much of this event except experience and a personal win of course.

Congratulations with the gold 🥇With a total score of 149.57 there was plenty points down to silver with Marie Kolly (ESP) 122.99 points. Mia scored 55.20 in her SP with a clean 3T-3T and 2A, but she had a fall and a UR on the 3loop, so she just barely missed the WC minimum again with a TES of 29. But she was pleased with the SP yesterday as she also skated as late as 11 pm yesterday and last skater out. She wasn´t pleased with her FS but I make another post about that.

Also in junior field there was a good competition for the Nordics skaters!

Casper Johansson (SWE) got silver in junior men with 169.16, but won the FS, the winner just barely won - 169.17!! That is as close as you can get.

In junior women Miranda Lundgren (SWE) won the event with 135.04 points! Iida Máki (FIN) was just barely ouf of the podium with one point...

And Darja Trubitson (FIN) won the Advanced Novice ladies event

Mia was the only Nordic senior skater who competed.

Mia wasn´t very happy with her FS today, the panel was nice so this was a great chance to take the WC minimums even with a few mistakes. She only got 45 points in TES (She scored 52.38 TES in Bulgaria with two pops).

3Lz (fall - hitting the boards), 3F (step out), 1Lo, 2T.... So costly mistakes where made in the beginning on her easy elements.....

She was quick enough to rearrange her program and add the combos on her salchows: The next jumps: 3S-2A-SEQ and then 3S-EU-2F which gave her over 15 points. And then she did a 2A-2T in the end. Good thinking!

It seems that Mias most stable jumps is 3S (and 2A). It makes sense with the salchow because she was posting a story this summer that she was trying 4S in harness!

Now, what I don´t understand is why she doens´t change her 3Lo in her SP now with a 3S, because it´s obvious mor stable:

The points for her 3Lo in her recent competitions:

SP:
1,96 (f, <)
5,55
2,45 (f, q)
3,01 (step out)

FS:
0,50 (single)
0,50 (single)
5,23
5,46

The points of her 3S in her recent competitions :

FS:

5,16
5,30
5,04

In combo:

7,74 (3S+2A+SEQ)
7,68 (3S-1Eu-2F)
7,03 (3S-1Eu-2F)
6,45 (3S-1Eu-2F)

Now, it seems that her 3Lo potentially gives her a little bit the more GOE when she hits it, but in average her 3S is rock solid. And with the loop it´s either hit or miss.

She will be competing at Santa Claus Cup in Budapest as her next competition and there is a much stronger field there so it will be interesting to see what she can do there! I think she and her coaches should sit down and do the math. I guess she still holds on to the loop because she was starting with junior this season and it´s the required solo jump, but it can´t be that big difference changing to the salchow in the senior competitions?

After her bronze in Warsaw today Janna has clear lead in scores for spot to EC, though she did not have clean SP today. But she is getting better PCS also and nobody in seniors is able to compete with her by same technical content,. There are no more many competitions left, so the others need to skate clean or almost clean and get good PCS twice if they want to pass her, and Janna also has at least nationals and I noticed also NRW Trophy next weekend. Jenni and Emmi have GP next weekend, then there is nationals and I found out Emmi is booked to Santa Claus Club and Zagreb. I doubt if she really will go to all those, otherwise there would one competition in week four weeks in row. But GP and nationals are the ones I think she will take part in. Janna is booked to NRW trophy next weekend, so also she has one international and nationals. I still stay behind my words I don't care so much who gets spot, because by skating clean anybody is able to get to top10.

I am little bit confused as I have never been biggest fan of very young skaters and now I can say (technically) best skater in Finland is 15 yo, and I like her. And Janna's teammate Iida in juniors is about at the same level as Janna, but as she is 14, there are still two years before she gets to seniors because of the raising age demands. There have been some skaters who have been at their best at young age, but they have retired at young age. Usually Finns have been late bloomers compared to many other feds. I hope Janna can have long career and stays healthy.
