Nordic skating (FIN, SWE, NOR, DEN, ISL)

I took a nap a moment ago and try to be awake for Nordic ladies live. There are also some other favs of mine at the first groups. It is just after midnight and I am sleepy at evening, so we will see can i make it.

Milania is still having back issues and she is going to have a doctor appointment in Finland after worlds. I hope it is nothing serious. Back issues has ended so many Finnish ladies' promising careers.

I hope she is going to be alright once she gets some rest at the end of a long season. I really like this team and she had this Ludmila Protopopov elegance to her that is so lovely to see.
 
The Irish Championships were held this weekend and a new girl, Caoilfhionn KAVANAGH, won the Advanced Novice title. (OK, so she was the only entry).

The reason I am bringing her up here is that she belongs to the Riihimäen Taitoluistelijat club. I think she grew up in Finland, because when I did a search for her name, a lot of Protocols from domestic Finnish events were coming up.

After seeing the photo and video on that page, I would put money on her mother being Finnish. Because 7-year-old Caoilfhionn looked just like a typical Finnish little girl. Were it not for the very Irish name, I would never have guessed that she had Irish heritage.

Wow, I hope for Teds sake she is not competing in JGP next season because poor man is going to struggle with this name :LOL: I think I will have to try 10 times before I would get her first name right :rofl: Also my first thought about her last name was to Kate Kavanagh in Fifty Shades of Grey 😅

Right enough! Ted is going to be pulling his hair out if and when Caoilfhionn gets to the Junior GP's. :drama:

I have to admit, this is a name I hadn't come across before, and I hadn't a clue how it was pronounced! But, during the podium presentation in the video, the Finnish announcer pronounced it as "Kee-lin". Which is the way that the boys' name Caolán is pronounced.

Hang on. I think the penny has just dropped on something.

When I was youngster, there was a girl that lived up the road from me whose name was pronounced "Kee-lin". And this always confused me, because as far as I was concerned that was a boys' name. But now that I am thinking about this, her name might have been spelt Caoilfhionn.

I wonder what she is up to now...

Facilities for Nordics next year in Norway, represented by Linnea Kilsand!

I had no idea that Varner Arena had a practice rink just beside the main rink. Varner Arena was built in 2022, so it´s pretty new. It can take up to 3500-3800 in audience (3500 seated areas).
 
Lot's of disaster skater at Finland's test skates, neihter SP, FS or both. I just checked the results and singles have finished. If they give the TBD GP spots based on these, it will go to Olivia and Janna. Linnea was near. Olivia had better FS, Linnea had better SP. Janna should be clear choice. Also Valtter has WD after SP and also some juniors. Can there be some epidemic?Iida would have won all including the men, Janna would have been second. Venla Sinisalo's SP has not been good based on the scores, but her FS TES has been close to Iida's. Keep her name in mind.

Daniela skated with with David Goldsthyen before and I did not know about her partner before I saw their names on this weekend's competition's list. I was too lazy to find out if her partnership with Matthew was mentioned in the splits/new partnership etc. thread. Well ID is getting more popular in Finland as juniors had five pairs. Not very high scores yet but here it starts when there is competition between who will get spots to JWC and the rest JGP spots. I suppose Finland has 4*1 ID spots for dance, right?

Yes, exactly. At the first two JGPs and then the 5th and 6th JGP.

Kesti/Liedenpohja have been assigned to both of the first JGPs, but they could still change around the entries at this point.
 
Seems there will still be two test skates in Finland I during next two weekends for singles. More opprtunities for those who had to wd from the 1st one? I am Just guessing without any knowledge.
 
Now some updates. Nella has been injured and then sick. Her starting point is not the best but she was surprised when she got another Gp spot which gives her more motivation. She was planning to have both Sp and Fs programs new ones but in this situation she keeps the old FS and has new SP. An article about test skates which is mostly about the two youngest national team members but also some sentences about Nella.
 
Mia and her sister Ella has changed clubs from Stavanger to Asker kunstløpklubb, according to the Fed page and a small note on the old clubs page. A quite big change as the new location is 6-7 hours away from Stavanger, her old club, so I´m assuming the family or most of the family are moving because of this. Mia also finished high school this spring so she might even have moved to start higher education as well.

This is the same club as Linnea Kilsand, Pernille With, Frida Berge, Ida Vamnes and Elea Rustgaard trains and the same club Sondre Oddvoll Bøe and Camilla Gjersem trained at. In other words the club known for good success with their skaters. I´m guessing it will be good for Mia and Ella to be surrounded with more skaters on higher levels.

I do not know if the situation changes with Agnes Z as their coach, but since she trained both Mia and Ella I think she had a contract with them and not the old club, so hopefully she is moving location with them. Maybe even Agnes Z will take some new students from Asker?

The new club is located where Nordics will be arranged this season, so she will be training in Varner Arena which I posted a video from earlier, so now Nordics will also be on home ice for Mia and Ella :)

Out of interest to see how much ice time the club gets, I checked the calenders for the two halls where Asker KK trains, Askerhallen and Varner Arena. During the summer it was summer closed like all the other halls but they opened up 12th of August again.

It seems they still trains most of their time in Askerhallen, which will be practice rink for Nordics.

Training times in Askerhallen:

Roughly between 14.00 - 17.00-18.00 each day they have ice time only for figure skating. So 3-4 hours sessions. On Mondays the ice time is divided between 14.30-15.50 and from 19.00 - 22.20, so it seems they have evening practice on Mondays. On weekends it seems they only have one session either Saturday or Sunday for 1-2 hours. On Wednesday there is morning session from 08.00 - 09.30 as well.

Other then that, there is no other booked in the calender most mornings from 08.00 - 10.00, i´m guessing it could mean they can train morning session but they won´t have the ice for themselves? I thought I have seen skaters train before school, also earlier than 08.00. I do think the hall opens before 10.00 but I´m not sure.

At Varner Arena they seem to have a session from 11.00 - 15.00 on Saturdays so that explains why they don´t have as much time in Askerhallen in the weekends. Additional they also have a Wednesday session in Varner Arena from 18.00 - 20.00. From the looks of it the ice hockey A-team have most of their practice/matches in Varner Arena so it seems the new hall is mainly for them but i´m guessing it also means that more ice time is free in Askerhallen for figure skaters. it seems in Askerhallen there is only young ice hockey players practicing except the figure skating team.

So roughly estimated they have mostly 4 hours each days only for figure skaters, on Wednesday they have extra sessions. On Sunday I do not think they train much., on Saturday a longer training session in Varner Arena. I also assuming additional time to train in the mornings before school if there is no other there (I doubt ice hockey players come to train at 07.00 in the morning?) My good guess is that they can train roughly around 5-6 hours in the weekdays with individual morning session which doesn´t seem so bad at all? This would equal around 20-30 hours high season which does make sense with the information from the ISU profiles.

I do not know what other clubs have with ice time, or how it´s in other countries. I would like to have so more digging into, particular to see if Asker has more ice time then other Norwegian clubs.

Edit: Mias ISU profile says she had 21 hours of training in Stavanger during high season, so I do not think it´s the issue of ice time that made her change clubs.

Edit 2: Linneas, Pernille, Frida ISU profile suggest they train 15-16 hours during high season, so a good 5 hours less than Mia used to in Stavanger. I do not know if it´s own choice or lack of ice time. Of course I did not think about that the 20-30 hours in the calenders are probably divided between different groups as well. If they can train up to 20 hours or more a week I´m guessing it depends on if they can do morning session between 06.00 - 10.00 or if the ice call is closed.

Additional. Seems Askerhallen has no ice between April - August. But Varner Arena has ice during April and there were a few session for figure skating in April, and then no Ice from May - August which I think it´s normal (also the reason why they go on camps during summer).

About the new junior ice dance couple; I think Giselle's mom is from Florida and that's how this pairing happened. They are coached by Marina Zoueva and her team at International Skating Academy in Estero, FL.

They withdrew from JGP Czech Skate, and as you can see on the second slide, Giselle has her arm in a mitella.

 
Really interesting with a new Swedish ID team. It went from zero to 3 teams in a years time. What an era for Nordic skating. Also very exciting that Iceland now has a pair team!

Hopefully Norway can follow soon, in fact they are really behind now given that Sweden got 3 ID teams. With this environment happening in Sweden now it could really be a good option for Norway to have a team to train in Sweden.

Maybe Milla inspires some of her team mates from her earlier club in Oslo.
 
Another new Swedish ID team. Their names doesn´t sound very Swedish :biggrin: After a Google search, seems like they are born and raised in Canada. How interesting!



Edit: They were announced as a new ice dance team in June, but it seems everyone assumed they would represent Canada. I´m really curious how they ended up representing Sweden, particular since there are 3 other teams now. And i´m guessing Citizenship isn´t going to be super easy for them.
