Figure skating icon Yuzuru Hanyu believes it is his mission to maintain the memory of the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami disaster that devastated his home region of northeastern Japan, using his talents on the ice to honor its victims.

Yuzuru speaking on TV news about his experience as a disaster victim and how it affected him and his life, including about creating the Notte Stellata shows. And newsevery report on Yuzuru visiting the school turned into a temporary shelter for evacuees where he stayed after the earthquake took his home. This video includes also footage of Yuzu visiting the disaster-stricken areas and talking about the earthquake in previous years. In Japanese but you can use the YouTube English subtitles tool.

I must say that while the Women had an impeccable can-can, legs exactly at 90° and not overrelying on neighbours for a push, the Men can-can was messier. It was good fun (and done for that purpose) but I can understand why TV channels didn't insist on it...

Yes, I didn't get it at first, only Takahito's post made me realize that this is Little Buddha soundtrack music, by Sakamoto of course. I loove the movie so much but it's been several years since I saw it last so I did not recognize it. But wow, now as I have rewatched it on Hulu delayed service, it makes perfect sense !! I made a mental note to watch the movie again when I have some spare time

Very interesting analysis of Happy End as it evolved within the Ryuichi Sakamoto universe and how it was interpreted by Yuzuru, and the contrast between the title and the true meaning of the piece. And in English !

"Perhaps this was never a piece about ending brightly or happily. Perhaps it was always a piece about learning how to go on living after one has known pain and wounds. And I believe that Yuzuru Hanyu showed exactly that — not only through words, but through his own body and performance.
Grief does not disappear. Wounds remain. And still, we go on living.
The point of arrival beyond that reality is what Ryuichi Sakamoto called “Happy End,” and what Yuzuru Hanyu traced on the ice this time."

I wonder who he will collaborate with next year... it's probably still too soon to think about it.
I wonder if the Sandwichman are somehow candidates? But they're a comic duo, I don't know how they could make a tribute to the Great Earthquake victims?

I think they could do something like a comedy skating show? The show's core theme is all about moving forward and being optimistic about the future despite the sufferings, internal struggles, and fragility of life, while also remembering the people who have passed on. It wouldn't necessarily stray away from the show's message, but like you said, I don't think they're a likely combination.
