I also really like this photo of Patrick on a CSOI poster.

And here is a fan-made photo banner celebrating Patrick's competitive accomplishments in his comeback season!:love::love:

Thank you for the lovelies!

A couple days ago, I found this article about Deniss Vasiljevs, a young Latvian figure skater. Take a look at his list of favorite skaters:

Skating is about more than jumps, Vasiljevs said. “It’s my life, figure skating,” he said, with no small amount of passion.

Step sequences, spins, how they make Vasiljevs’ mind burst. He has an entire list of favourite skaters/role models. First on his list is Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland.

“He was the first skater that I really loved his skating,” he said. As a boy (he’s still a boy), Vasiljevs watched Lambiel all the time, every time he could. “It was like the first moment of work that I would try to skate as him,” Vasiljevs said. “I was always trying to reach his level.”

Besides, his mother, a former dancer, was a Lambiel fan.

His second love was Daisuke Takahashi. “In my opinion, he is so talented and so unbelievably great skater,” said the beaming Latvian. “He could do every music you going to give him. Like for me before, I could do only classical.”

Next on the list? Patrick Chan, the three-time world champion known for his uncommon skating skills, who steams from one end of the ice to the other in a couple of gulps, who skates on the edge, pushing the limits like nobody else. Yes, Vasiljevs appreciates that.

Chan is the first skater of the highest level that Vasiljevs has met “in real life.”

“I love his performance,” Vasiljev said of the Canadian. “It is in my opinion something special, that I never saw in other skaters.”

He liked Chan before and he likes him even better now, he said.

And just for good measure, he throws in Javier Fernandez. “He’s from Europe, come on,” he said. “Always it’s Canada or United States or Japan. And here he is coming from Spain and he is a very good skater.”
:points: for Deniss!!! I  his list! He wants to be an ARTIST out there on the ice. :yay: The whole article is worth reading and it includes a video of his Worlds SP, which I watched for the first time today. British Eurosport loves him and, now, so do I! :)

Here's a picture of Deniss with Patrick from 2013. :luv17:

Thanks, Skatingfan4ever, I love the fan-made art above! It makes me want to create some, too!

Here's a very nice shot of Patrick that was captured by Katsuko at the Boston Worlds EX:

Lovely vest - I think this was taken when Megan and Eric were introducing him. He looked so pleased!

Thank you for the lovelies!
You're welcome! I didn't create any of it, but I was happy to bring the links here for you all. I love it all too, obviously! And, what a great shot from the gala - thanks for bringing it here, vivley!

A few nice tidbits:

Here's an article about one of the local skaters, and what she said about Patrick: :agree:

The best part of it all for her though really is having Patrick Chan on board as the guest skater for Saturday’s event. Chan is her favourite skater and she actually got to meet him briefly last winter when she ran into him at the Halifax Airport.

“It was the best moment of my life,” she said.

An Italian article on the ISU changing the rules about repeating jumps (mentions Patrick and has a photo of him):

And a nice figure skating "confession" about our Patrick:

Only "less than four months older", The sport is being dominated by "old" men! :sarcasm:

Haha. I think he put his phone or his gloves in his pocket. If it's the babychiddy making kit, he should wear different pants. Hahaha. But I think it's just this picture. Trust me, we would have noticed it before. Lol. :eeking:

What are your thoughts guys regarding Patrick's tech content after seeing Shoma's quad flip tonight?

There's a 2.0 difference between a quad toe and a quad flip. It looks like Patrick is going to have to attempt a 4F (12.3 points) or 4Lo (12.0 points) in his SP to bridge his base value gap with the rest of the top guys as Yuzuru is no doubt going to be fired up to do 4Lo in the SP after tonight.

Is it reasonable to expect this from Patrick? Or has Patrick been thinking more along the lines of Evgeni Plushenko and is dreaming of a team medal at the Olympics? From his 4CC FS I didn't get that idea. But if his base value continues to be low then it will make it more likely that the other top men will overcome his scores and push him off the podium. And Patrick no longer has a PCS cushion. A good 4S might help, but if it's popped or if he falls then is it better to attempt a harder jump?

My mind keeps thinking at times that Patrick has realized he's behind the ball, and may not be able to catch up, but he's still going for the team medal. And as much as it sucks to say, there is no other senior man in Canada right now that can do better than him internationally so he's carrying the torch.

Patrick at his best has never scored over 100 points in an SP so there is a niggling worry in my mind. Because I know Patrick will be rewarded if he ups his tech content. But will he beyond the 4S?? This is the era of new quads, but is Patrick going to be a part of it? Can I hope for a 4Lz or should I turn to the crazy future predictions thread?

hi mango :hap93:

this is funny as my first thoughts went for YUZU... :) now he has competition, at home ;) will he be happy with a 4Lo or aim for higher...? Murakami is also attempting the 4F.... he could have two skaters at his nationals doing 4F ;)

there are a lot of things to consider here...

1) kudos to Shoma but my untrained eye wasn't sure it was a clean jump... (judges ratified it)... and of course it was scratchy with probably negative GOE. Apparently, a few days ago, his attempt at it was UR.. so WILL it be a one hit wonder 4F like Brandon Mroz's 4Lz or will it be a money making jump for Shoma ? We certainly do not know yet...

2) Patrick has said it loud and clear : next is 4S.... I think he will stick to his plan, no matter what others are doing... his 3S is very nice so I can see him do a very beautiful 4S in the purest style (no ice skidding... but he will see)

3) Patrick's best jumps IMHO have always been his 3Lz and 3F so i would believe that he could work towards the quads of these species...

4) Patrick's worst triple jump IMHO is 3LO... so i doubt he would do the 4Lo...

5) what matters MOST for Patrick is not which second quad he gets... but simply getting any one of them... I don't think most skaters will have 3 different quads.... but it doesn't matter as in the SP one only needs 2... so if Patrick wants to remain in contention, he needs 2 quads in the SP... for the LP, there are various options.... 2 4Ts is very good for Patrick... a third quad (second type) allows him to gain a few points compared to the second 3A.... but then, there is a limit as Patrick mentioned .... how many quads can one do and still have a real program ?
in conclusion... i am not worried about Shoma's 4F... ;) I only wish for Patrick to keep on target and learning a second type of quad.... that's what gave Javi the gold two years in a row ;)

Hi 4everchan! :hap93:

I didn't know about Murakami. Team Japan is all quads all the time now eh! While our Canadian men are continuing the pursuit to master the triple Axel...

1) Here's the protocol. He got a positive GOE. Not all the judges seemed to have noticed his free leg touch the ice it seems since only two of them gave him negative GOEs. He's done the jump at least two times in public cleanly, and he fell once. I think he'll continue performing it.

2) Oh yes, no doubt about that quad Salchow. I know he's got a plan. Does that plan include ramping up the number of new quads he's learning as the competition heats up? He's got less than two years now.

3) I hope you are right and he upgrades at least one of those jumps. Three different quads by Chiddy would be a dream! Can you imagine a quad Lutz? :eeking:

4) You are the expert sir. And a 4Lo is not worth as much so it's ok.

5) I think this is where we disagree. I think it's becoming apparent that you need at least two different quads to be top 5, but three to medal unless you're very clean and artistic. Patrick has the artistic part down, but he struggles so much with the quad toe sometimes that it's not even a jump he can consistently rely on. If he has a quad Salchow, that's money in the points but let's be real. He's not going to win things limiting himself to triples when even under rotated quads are worth more than any triple jump other than a 3A (which also is a problem for Patrick). If only Patrick could be as consistent as Fernandez in big situations...then I would not even be having this discussion. As for more quads and a quality program - who better to demonstrate this than Patrick? He has stellar skating skills, if he gets those quads then the judges will shower him with love.

The problem I see is that Uno is the only guy who has the artistic elements close enough to Hanyu, Fernandez, and Chan to possibly beat them in the near future. He did it with Patrick this season at GPF but fell apart in the FS at Four Continents - otherwise he might have beat Patrick there as well. Patrick needs to put himself on a level where he is unbeatable and stay there until May 2018. With two different quads (those being a quad toe and Salchow), I don't think that'll happen.

1) Canadian men are in good shape, or were until injuries.. Reynolds was the quad master a couple seasons ago ;) Nadeau is promising. Hoping for Nam to recover. Elladj lands a quad too... messing as well...(i think) and of course Patrick... we are in good shape.... (USA struggles more with quads as a nation I'd think)

2)Juding/ GOE at TCC... wel it's a bit over the top ;) so let's not worry too much

3) I am not an expert :) just a crazy fan :)

I think you have a point that rotating a quad is worth more than an okay landed triple... yup... that's for sure... but tha'ts not Patrick's plan.... he doesn't plan for falls.. he wishes for perfect flawless skates... I hope he sticks to his plan as I enjoyed it this year.... his LP at 4cc is what he is aiming for... perhaps with one more 4S in it in future years

but if he were to add a couple more tricks and start falling or worse, popping them, it wouldn't be Patrick... I believe Patrick reaches the audience best when he is flawless... of course makes sense for all skaters, but I would say even more so for Patrick because of the quality of his choreography and other elements....

A perfect Patrick will always be in the mix IMHO at least until everyone has 4-5 quads per LP.... do not forget that when Patrick lands his jumps well, he has a gorgeous flow and air position.... he gets very high GOEs.... some skaters land quads without any flow or with weird air position.... so we will see ;)

one thing is sure : Patrick got carried on this year with quad galore... and improved way above my personal expectations on his comeback year..... WOW!!! I am still elated from what he has achieved... probably THE BEST LP in the last ten years (4CC) if not longer.... So I hope this inspires him even further.!!!

Gotta go :) more later !!!

I love what you said here. :agree:

And speaking of Patrick, here are a couple of photos of him, courtesy of the mayor of Corner Brook, Charles Pender. Happy smile!

Autographed program for Pender:

Look at what the program says about Patrick! :hap57:

When you are watching a skater perform and you feel like they are taking you with them, then you know that you are watching something very special.

Patrick Chan is that skater. His amazing technical skills coupled with his unbelievable artistic ability leave us breathless!

Haha, I see that Calica and I posted at the same time. :-)

The show started at 2:30 p.m. local time so Patrick is probably skating now.
