Patrick Chan

All right, I'm finally back, and my hugs go out to everyone. :ghug: However, if you need some encouragement to cheer you up, please go to my blog post, where I rounded up comments on Twitter supporting Patrick:

Patrick Chan 2016 Grand Prix Final: Days 3 to 5

I also created a GIF of the 4S, because it's historic. :)

Like many of you, I did wonder if Patrick was skating on bad ice, because his falls seemed very uncharacteristic. But I was glad to see him in good spirits afterwards.

This event has reminded me of a good life lesson: I can either look at the positive side of things and keep a cheerful and thankful attitude, or I can let myself slide into a negative attitude over setbacks and disappointments. Patrick is making progress on his journey, and I am happy for him. Just focus on his beautiful smile.

perhaps if he had been wearing his new costume on the ad... but MTK's :probably Patrick's biggest fashion disaster if there was ever one.
If you can't wait, you can go to see him on Dec.17. Here's his invitation. You don't need to RSVP! (and you can taste his ice wine free of charge!)

"Join me and @Winemakersboots on Saturday Dec. 17 at the Summerhill @LCBO from 12-2pm."

thanks Vivley... always fun to check out what you put on your blog...

for the records
PatrickChanForever96 this twitter user isn't me ;)

I had recorded CBC today, not knowing that the Men's skate would be on the big screen.... not sure if I want to see it in big... but I am watching Shoma right now and kurt is excited ;) so perhaps i will just let the tape go on... to hear kurt's comments.

I am looking forward to hear Patrick talk about his performance....

Haha, I know that's not you, because they are American fans. ;)

oh.. one more thing ;) great new avatar viv ;) i am not surprised you picked red ;)

Thank you! Red and purple are great! But I like this one because it has better lighting. :)

BTW, Kyrn23 found this photo of Patrick where he was wearing his new ombre costume a week ago!

I wonder what he got for Christmas?

so ... interesting to watch on TV...

the costume is much nicer.. the pants are great. I retract my original concerns about their colour once more.

patrick's skating remained committed and beautiful despite the mistakes. His blade and edge work is of course better on the big screen than what I had noticed on the macair... and from everyone talking about seeing him live for the first time, well... i cannot wait.

Carol Lane said (paraphrasing) nobody can skate like him... perhaps Kurt

Kurt says... (paraphrasing) thanks for the compliment but no... Patrick is amazing as he can get so much power from the simplest movement.

Patrick : happy about the short program. "great skates go a long way down the season" "quad sal, despite a bad long" "huge bonus for me... i'm in the game with two different quads" "a lot of good things"

Kurt : god sent 4sal he can build on that

Carol : and think about the short... think about the short...

It was actually nice to watch again with commentary. At first, I didn't want to see it again, despite the fact that I am not particularly disappointed in the results as I couldn't care less about GPF :) that's not what will make or break Patrick's illustrious career. However, when a disastrous program goes on, without commentary, I realised I was left with myself fearing the worst. But then, Kurt would simply explain why Patrick, Javi or Yuzu made the mistakes they made.... and that is very helpful.

1) quad toe : "Patrick was loose in the air... couldn't get up straight... "(that's weird as it usually doesn't happen... perhaps jitters or ice... that's the big combo that is indeed the only big jump in the corner of the ice)
2)3axel : "so high in the air... "(i think that one shocked everyone... perhaps Patrick wanted it too much)

for the quad sal... when he got it, Kurt praised Patrick for keeping the fight.

3) quad toe, turned triple... Kurt " he reached too much with his toe-pick, he wanted it too much" (that's a mistake fair enough but I prefer that kind of a pop where the skater opens up in the air as he knows he will have a bad fall because he's overreached than a tentative pop....like in tennis.. better hit the ball OUT than in the net)

In the end, let's keep in mind another thing that changed the whole TES for Patrick. He missed two combos here. Falling on the 4T meant not 3T... then he popped the quad toe into a triple ....again, no combo.... the Axel fall meant that again, he got a +COMBO deduction in the BV because he couldn't tag along his 2T... so not only the points for the 2T are gone but the whole jump gets a huge deduction.... Hanyu was smart to tag his 3T somewhere else in his program after falling on his 4S... he did get the same deduction as Patrick did on the 4S attempt for not tagging his combo BUT, he was able to recuperate the 4 points of the 3T later on....

One thing that I believe Patrick isn't doing, and perhaps that's good, is that he doesn't mess up much with the planned content... If something doesn't work out, he doesn't rearrange the program... He's done it in the Short but I haven't seen him do it in this long.... for instance, he could have tagged whatever combo on the 3F in the end. Would that make a difference? In this case, could have given him 4th place because he lost by a couple points... No big deal... but perhaps in another competition it could be the difference between a podium finish or not...

Thank you, 4everchan. I hope the CBC version will be posted on YouTube soon so I can listen to it the commentary.

I was listening to what Patrick said at the end of his performance to Marina: "I almost stop thinking about the toe. We've been working on sal so much that ? toe is a little more..."

Too bad the video cut off at that point...

I was re-watching all the programs. (I was closing my eyes first time around for the last 3 disasters from Y, J, P) and noticed that in the last spin where Chan has his arms raised above his head, there seems to be a hole in the fabric under his arm. https://youtu.be/lryYXaatfCw?t=7m46s

at the beginning there's a large sweat mark...i don't see a hole but a white sort of thing... could be deodorant or dried sweat mark??? or a hole like you say???

Yeah, I think some improvements could be made to the new costume... The white points under his arms were a bit distracting...

Anyway, I just updated my blog post with the EX gala stuff. I wish Patrick would stand more front and center in the group shots. He was hiding at the end and at the back today. But he got some nice comments for his EX!

It's also hilarious how many cats (and dogs) love Patrick!

I like his haircut, not his new costume....

I'm not enthralled with his new "costume" either. Evidently whatever it does for his program is not worth what negatives it brings. The haircut, I hope it doesn't go further up to become a Rippon.

Now, his exhibition costume, which i believe is a costume since we never see him actually dressed in white T and jeans, would you prefer a more fitting T to show off his build or as it is so we get flashes of his torso? :)

I chuckled when I saw that shock of hair sticking out during the final spin of the LP. It looks good when it's dressed up for the performances, but it doesn't look good when it's just hanging flat, so he'll need to use something to make it stay in place every day.

New LP costume - nice ombre color, but needs some more work to make it look nicer (as mentioned above).

EX costume - white t-shirt is okay, but often looks wrinkly, especially around the collar. I would prefer something that at least looks like it was ironed or steamed before he wore it.

Anyway, here's my congrats graphic for him:

Now I must be off. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

New hair cut? Its looks no different to me. Patrick always keeps his hair short, that's his trademark. ;)

I love the colors of his new costume(my favorite colors). I think Patrick likes to keep things simple and I agree with him. "Simple is beautiful".

Patrick will never look like Adam... even if he tried... both completely different kinds of beauty there. Patrick is by no mean a traditional pretty/handsome boy. His smile makes 90% of his looks :) it's the interior that exudes so much hotness ;) it's less plastic than what we think of a traditional pretty face. Adam, not my type, but he has truly beautiful features.. no need to know him, no need for him to smile.. .he just is good looking... in the standards of what people would say nowadays...

I actually believe that for Journey, it shouldn't be a tight v neck torso show off tshirt... i like his outfit for now as it has the colours i wanted from the beginnng.. but honestly, i would have liked a more puffy shirt LOL... looser... not necessarily puffy... so that it does flow when he skates. But Patrick is way too smart to go that way. Having the simplest lines on his costumes allows everyone to see how pure his lines are. Patrick has the ability to look good on the ice from every angle. A costume that would be just a tad more elaborate would ruin that IMHO. Stick to the costume but remove the white spots :) lol

one more post about costumes then I shut up... for like a half page or so ;)

let's take blackbird...

Imagine
Takahashi skating to this... we would have feathers somewhere...
Joubert : pleather pants, some elaborate top showing a deep vneck
Yuzu : wings LOL just kidding... but there would be a frill or a ruffle of some sort on the shirt.
Adam : mesh black fabric, extremely tight fitting
Max : black tights and a shirt with feather motives, then replaced by a shirt with a crow on it.
Javi : skating pants in black with a black not too interesting shirt and taped on suspenders ;)

Patrick, nicely fitted black trousers with short sleeve top in the same fabric with REAL suspenders...

What I am getting at is that Patrick does two things really well for costumes (ok... except MTK)
1) fits are always nice and showcase his body and lines when skating
2) modern elegant simplicity.

I think that Patrick is going more and more and more for the pure beautiful skating he is known for. There is no superfluous elements or tricks or what not... His style is classy and classic YET it is modern. I think that's what he wants to leave as his legacy upon returning to the sport. Yes, he was the COP child prodigy who could score so much higher than everyone because of his skating skills... but the generation following him have found ways to optimize their scoring, sometimes adding more and more and more things that make programs look too busy IMHO... I stress the fact that this is just MY OPINION and not throwing shade at anyone else. Patrick's skating in the Chopin, the Beatles and Journey are all good examples of less is more but at the same time the less is at a very high level in both quality and variety. There is no need to do 19 twizzles when 1 or 2 fabulous ones do the job. I like his trademark lyrical moments which feature sharp arm movements... We see them both in the Chopin and Journey. People have said he is stiff... that's not true... that's just modern dance precise movements.

So in light of that, I think that the whole package, including costumes, that Patrick is presenting has to do with what he came back to do. He wanted to pave the road for a different style of refinement, of pure quality, modern skating. That's also why he was very cautious about adding quads, backloading some of the big elements (4t, 3a-2t) and burdening programs with repetitive items. Everything has its place. Nothing is superfluous...

like the simpler costumes....

I liked MTK version 2 (violet vest) much more than MTK version 1 (baggy blue sweater).

The only costume that I really disliked was the one he wore for the Japan Open 2014.
Omg - the very baggy crotch :palmf:
I tried to find a link and mercifully I couldn't find one. (The videos were pulled from youtube for copyright.)

As for the new one I like it. When I was envisioning what I wanted for "A Journey" I had an ombre look in mind. It could probably be tweaked, maybe more gradation, but for Patrick this is the type of simplicity that works for him.

As for the haircut - it's not drastic enough for me to notice. :)
