Patrick Chan

thanks to BBHILL i can join in with the love avatars for chiddy

this is from 4cc : Han Yan shows his love to his idol Patrick Chan!

I join Han and to Patrick, I say I love you!!!

During tumultuous times, LOVE can heal everything. I hope Patrick knows how many fans he has all over the world who love him and his skating. We only wish him the best and to be happy. He cannot disappoint us... WE LOVE YOU PATRICK!!!!

i'd like to play his elegy while he skates on it.. i'd settle down for the chopin if needed lol

There was a memorial tribute to Leonard Cohen concert at the Bell Centre tonight. Over 10 thousand people (including Justin Trudeau) were there. You should play Hallelujah there.:laugh:

bTW, really like your new avatar!

i would ;) if patrick skated to it...

when cohen died... i walked down to his house from work... and stayed there for a while... there was a radio playing his music... dozens of people praying, singing, hugging, crying... it was a unique moment... i will always remember how if felt... the love for someone gone but someone who had accompanied through his songs, so many people...

there were candles, cards, paintings, flowers, letters.... people were truly and genuinely hurt by his passing... and that was one reason i didn't like that choice for Patrick either... the way he mentioned it didn't make me think that he knew or loved cohen's music.. ... i didn't mind it that much but yeah.... i just wished that things were coming from his heart.....

anyways... my avatar has many hearts on it... some very obvious, and some not... :)

It's nice to have the images of your favorite skaters in one avatar. The smiles, expressions---just melt my heart. :luv17:

viv : thank you for sharing... it made me  i just couldn't help seeing it as a farewell video. Some of Patrick's highlights there... I also liked that you put the quad mishap on let it go... so I know it's not quite the retirement video yet.. but one to encourage him to look at his body of work and move on from one bad event....

Oh Patrick... I knew this year would be tough emotionally for your fans... but I didn't expect it to be that tough... so I can only imagine how it must be for him... Here is something Patrick should consider in my opinion... Everyone is talking about retiring after the games... he should think about going to worlds... that way there is less pressure on the games... No matter what happens at the games he could still retire then, but in his planning/schedule, worlds should be there... and it would help psychologically IMHO.

In any case... that's a very well-made video... I cannot imagine doing one for Patrick's retirement : there is so much to include... all his victories... 2 and soon 3 Olympics...wow...

PS I saw a Di Manno article floating up there.... I didn't bring it here on purpose but I know some of you may still want to read it .... I just didn't want to but there is one...it's pre-Skate Canada..

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Just made it public so it should be searchable now.

Don't worry, it was not intended to be a retirement video, but an encouragement video like you said. I tweeted to him to "keep moving forward", which is the motto from the Disney movie "Meet the Robinsons," and when I listened to the theme song I wanted to make a video, but I was amazed at how well his skating "synced" with the music!

I just added the lyrics to the video description but I'll go back and add captions for it later! :agree:

Yes, and it would give us a chance to see him one last time!

Yeah, I saw the Di Manno article... "unsteady blades" indeed! :noshake: She'll continue to be nasty to the end, won't she? Must be jealous!

Anyway, thank you! You already gave me the idea for my next video - a compilation of Patrick's textbook jumps! :agree:

Love it all so much, especially the quad fall on "let it go" through to a successful 4T+3T on "let your clarity define you in the end" and then the expression in the SC 2015 K&C. PERFECTION!!! I didn't take it as a farewell video, but rather it's very encouraging for the future! Good tears, for sure! :thank:

Skating PJ's latest podcast with David Wilson, where they discuss Patrick as well!

http://www.openkwongdore.com/2017/11/07/episode-42-david-wilson/

Okay, time for me to update the blog!
Hallelujah always gets the short end of the stick! :laugh2: PJ asks, "Tell me about Patrick's programs to 'Dust in the Wind' and 'Hallelujah'" and David doesn't talk about Hallelujah at all! In his words, Patrick got attached to DITW after David presented the idea, so Patrick really did push for it. David spoke at length about Kathy Johnson's influence on Patrick's skating (nutshell: she taught him how to move and be aware of his body, and so David can talk to Patrick like a dancer because Kathy taught him that way. David can talk to him differently than any other skater he choreographs for because of this shared knowledge they have from Kathy). The way that dance is taught is that technique is a part of artistry and artistry is a part of technique. Dancers always move in a purposeful way, so that's what Patrick is able to do in his skating. Besides Patrick, David talks about V&M's Moulin Rouge and choreography in general, but the Patrick stuff is from 11:07-18:52.

On another Patrick-related topic, over the last two days I've been thinking about the awesomeness of Patrick's POTO. Since 2011, with the exception of Akiko Suzuki's masterpiece, any time another skater has skated to POTO, I find myself visualizing Patrick's POTO while they're skating, particularly the speed and intensity of Patrick's footwork sequences and transitions. In certain sections of the music, I find myself thinking, "Patrick did X right there; I wish you'd done a little/lot more." I suppose other fans also visualize their favorite programs when someone else skates to the same music, so maybe that's not too strange. ;)

Besides remembering how much I love Patrick's POTO, I've also been thinking about how I miss the attack and abandon Patrick competed with in 2011. Take Five and POTO were both upbeat pieces where he could have fun and skate fast. Lately for competition he has skated to pieces of music that are slower and more contemplative in nature. With his most recent upbeat competitive piece, MTK, he said he felt rushed for the jumps. Was this a mental issue, since earlier in his career he seemed to not have a problem with skating well to upbeat music in competition? (Granted, MTK was pretty strange all around :slink:). I love DITW and Hallelujah very much as programs for Patrick, but I wonder if having more upbeat music this season would help energize Patrick for competing like the fighter he is? I know he is passionate about these pieces and they are special to him and they reflect where he is in his career and life right now, but what would happen if we took those factors out of the equation and simply gave him upbeat music instead? These issues are complex, so maybe the upbeat music choices wouldn't change anything if his body or mind was not fully engaged. Still, I can't help wondering about it. Patrick does well with upbeat, fun Exs, but it seems like he has come to believe that he skates better with slower, melodic, lyrical pieces in competition. I miss the skater who skated with the abandon of POTO, even though I am in love with the skater Patrick has become. Any thoughts on any of this? I hope it makes sense.

Thanks for watching my music video!

And great minds think alike! I tweeted a few days ago that maybe Patrick should switch his EX with his LP. A couple days later another fan tweeted to Pchiddy that he preferred Patrick's old LPs to Hallelujah. You'll see this documented on my new blog post.

Yes, the new blog post is up! It has a transcript of David Wilson's lovely words about Patrick, my new music video, and some other things. I will be updating it throughout November - more to come!

Latest article and skating analysis from Alain Goldberg on Patrick! What do you think, 4everchan?

Patrick Chan doit retrouver ses marques, selon Alain Goldberg

I used Google Translate for the following excerpts:

"He made the right decision to step back and readjust. It will allow him to regain his bearings and give himself the time to be selected for the Olympic Games at the Canadian Championships."

"Chan has tried to add the quadruple salchow, which is a square jump, but he has a harder time doing it. He managed the quadruple stitched loop, but he also managed the triple axel, which is a very hard jump because the jump is taken directly forward on one leg while the others are taken almost on two legs, with a double support."

"It's going to depend on him, it's going to depend on the team around him, his psychological difficulties by not finding his bearings. [If he is] able to forget these worries, overnight, he can find the movements he misses."

"We owe a lot of respect to Patrick Chan. He puts his head back on the block. He has nothing to prove. He has been world champion three times, silver medalist at the Olympics. He can help the Canadian team win a team medal, and he will be greatly needed. It is imperative that he can find his bearings, if only for him to be proud of him. That's what matters. The rest does not matter, he does not have to prove that he was and still is a great skater."

the article is alright... Goldberg thinks that Patrick made the right move : he explains that Patrick had lost his rhythm or "markers" which explains the issues at Skate Canada. He adds that the game has changed since Patrick's return... and that's thanks to Patrick himself as the other skaters understood that to be on top, they needed 4 or 5 quads in the LP... 2 was phenomenal in Sochi, now it's not enough. This puts Patrick in a difficult situation, as he needs to be clean and with that comes a lot of pressure. Goldberg adds that it's a good idea to delay his return to competition as it will help Patrick to be more comfortable with his material and have less pressure. Though, he does mention that Patrick has to do a lot of psychological work and serious work with his team as well...

I think that's what I remember from a quick scan of it....

In the most recent Ice Talk podcast, Max Aaron talks about wanting to be like Patrick "when he grows up" and watching his Phantom program and getting a standing ovation at Nationals with 30 seconds still left in the program. He said he wanted a moment like that one for himself. It sounded like Patrick's Phantom program (at least in part) inspired him to use the music for his free this year. Some of the things Max said about this season is similar to what Patrick has said too, about enjoying the experience and making memories. The portion about Patrick starts about 41 minutes in.

Elsewhere, he mentioned watching lots of videos of top skaters do quads and trying every technique to see what worked for him, and that's how he changed to an outside there turn entrance. I wouldn't be surprised if he studied Patrick's quad toe since it's also from an outside 3.

well it's good to see skaters are looking up at patrick to learn how to be better skaters.

Watching Max's Phantom at COC is what got me thinking about Patrick's Phantom again. I didn't want to name any skaters or make my post negative. I am very glad that Max feels inspired by Patrick. They are very different skaters but hopefully he can have his own special Phantom moment. I didn't enjoy Max's Phantom at COC, but we'll see how it improves by Nationals. Here is Patrick's Nationals Phantom Moment. As thrilling today as it was the first time I watched it!

ETA: I linked to the CBC version first because the commentary is better, but there are a couple of glitches in it, unfortunately. The CBC Bold version has no glitches but not-as-good commentary. Take your pick!
