It isn't necessary to have a story, but I want at least a program that emotes something. Otherwise its just steeps jumps with music. Parts of Patrick's long emotes something although I don't know what
When it comes to his axel, I can't say that it is a terrible jump. Or that he never nails it, I just that I find that it is the one he struggles with. :scratch3:
Kurt Browning? Well though I like his commenting over all, more for the comedic over the top wording he has, I seldom watch Patrick Chan when it is a Canadian broadcasting. Sometimes I watch clips here and there, but I much prefer Eurosport's brittish uncels or Svt (swedish channel).

Last month I sent Patrick another forum member's excellent insights on what he would need to do to make his program connect more with the audience. You can read them here and here. I think you might agree with Melmel, and if you have any feedback you would like me to pass along, please let me know.

I noticed several GS forum members including Melmel said that last night's SP performance was the best they had seen Patrick "sell it" and try to connect with the audience, even after his fall. I agree that he seemed happy to go out on the ice, and maintained that smile throughout, even afterwards during his interviews.

"I feel good, I feel happy, not disappointed at all," Chan said — and looked like he genuinely meant it.

As for his FS, after watching it over and over, to me the only thing that was missing was a smile at some point; just a little indicator that he was enjoying himself. I hope to see this tomorrow.

For what it is worth: i'm a musician. To me, Patrick is one of the only figure skaters right now who truly makes one with music. His entire body is in synch with the music. It's done with depth, detail and care. And thankfully, it's not graphic or literal. For instance, in the Chopin lp, the first piece is a cascade of fast notes in the left hand. The right hand hammers these dotted rhythm chords. It's fiery and passionate. Patrick emotes this perfectly by the choreography: fast skating, flow and the big jumps are well timed throughout the opening. I get excited just like when I listen to the piece. The middle section, as you said is lyrical. Patrick's skating reflects the melancholy of the tune. He is gliding and using deep edges there. Jumps, spins and footwork are timed perfectly with highlights of the piece. I'm writing this in a rush and running out of time but I hope you can look at it from another perspective. To me, it's a great performance.

I'm happy to see the mostly positive press after Patrick's skate last night - as he said before, people forget that he's only been back to competitive skating for 6 months, so to be in third right now is quite a feat! To quote Kathy:

His Chopin LP will be one of my forever favorites, but I wish him even more spectacular success with his future LPs.

In the same video, I also loved what he said to Scott about his 4CC win (~1:30), that it taught him "not to lose hope and to always give it 100% no matter the results, no matter where you're standing in the group."

I am so proud of Patrick - he has learned so much about himself, his skating, and most of all, about mental toughness and perseverance in the face of tough challenges. I can see the difference in the way he talks about himself and his performances, how much more organized he is back stage, and even in little details like his hair and grooming. He is truly evolving into a gentleman-athlete.

Really loved the way he hugged Nam backstage - I think the next step is for him to grow in his sportsmanship and leadership skills. Even though FS is an individual sport, I think Patrick could be a great team leader to Nam, Liam, Kevin, and the other Canadian skaters so they bond as a close team going into the 2018 Olympics. How great would that be!

And now I'm off to prepare for an Introduction to Twitter lesson that I'm giving - the attendees will be seeing Patrick's picture - a lot!

I really appreciate the quotes you brought over, as always! There's so much good stuff in there. Here's another great tidbit. In the post-SP interview with CBC, Patrick said, "For me it's about the performance and how it feels to me personally...It's all about me, and I have to be selfish, and I find that gives me my best performances, which in turn actually does affect the audience and everyone around me in a positive way." YOU HAVE FOUND IT, PATRICK, YOU HAVE FOUND IT - the secret to your mental toughness. Congrats on that. Stay serene and within yourself and whatever happens happens.

So tomorrow is the last time we will see this Chopin LP. I hope this doesn't mean he's keeping MTK next season.:dev2: Two new programs is what I would prefer.

Yuzu Describes the other top skaters this year with the first thing that comes to mind.

Fenandez: Soft. The softness of his knee when landing the 4S, The atmosphere he can generate, especially his interpretation of comical music, that comes to my mind right now. ...Because we are training together, I knew he could get 300 points.

Chan: Strong. His skates with such a sound! 'Gooooo' (rumbling sound) The way he uses his edges, the bend and extension of his knees, he goes with a strength only he has. If someone said 'skate like Patrick' I could do it, for about 20-30 seconds. But for him on top of the quads and with the axels and triple triples, he skates like that till the end of the program, he has that strength. The feeling that he rules the skates in terms of skating quality.

Shoma: Hmmm...intelligent. He is steady. Probably, mind you, if you compared the time that I spent skating and Shoma spent skating, all added up from the time we started, Shoma might have skated longer. The time spent skating. He has trained that much. And has developed a style and I respect that about him. Something that I could never do.

Jin: Ferocious. (or energetic) He really has his own style, and he has not lost his feel for quad jumps. Boyang's Boyang performance, has such energy in it I really like it.

Hello everyone! I'm happy to come here and feel the Patrick love! I have been burning the candle at both ends, so to speak, this week trying to keep up with everything from worlds (practice reports, live streams, CBC coverage) as well as my full time job and family responsibilities. Thankfully, I booked today off as a vacation day and I have the weekend off so I get 3 solid days where I have nothing planned but following along with every aspect of Worlds. :agree:

I thought Patrick really delivered in the short program. Yeah, the axel went up on a lean so there was little hope he could save it but other than that it was a great performance, and he didn't let the fall phase him at all. I am thrilled with his score and his placement going into the free. And he skates last! I was lucky enough to see both programs live at Canadians this year and I have really warmed to the Chopin program. It suits him and he is just so one with the music (IMO). I understand that not everyone gets that or sees it that way though. I think we all "get" certain skaters and don't "get" others. I recognize Hanyu's brilliant technique but emotionally I don't necessarily get him. To each his or her own, right?

Did anyone see any mens' practice reports from yesterday? I hope Patrick has been enjoying his sessions and things have been working well for him. I hate not being there in person because I generally manage to catch all his practices (even if it means I have to skip some of the competition). I am so excited to attend two events next season: Skate Canada and Canadians. I do think he will change his short program and it sounds like he plans to change his long program as well. I wouldn't mind him keeping Chopin another year, but I look forward to something new if that's his plan.

I saw a summary of what he said on a Japanese tweet, and noted that the word Yuzuru used is this word "剛" which means "hard, tough, rigid, strong, etc." In Chinese it also sounds the same as the word for "steel". Yes! His strong steel blades carving into that ice...:agree:

Haha, thank you for this. Remember at the beginning of the season when people criticized Patrick's costumes, saying they looked like he shopped at a department store for them? Back then I thought it was an ingenious way for him to save money. Now I know that a) he did get his costumes from a department store and 2) he is saving a lot of money on clothes so he can spend them on more important things, such as training and injury prevention. It's a total WIN-WIN! :agree:

Chan has vowed to focus on his own efforts. He’s added degree of difficulty and gives up nothing in terms of jumping ability and explosiveness to his competition.

“They’ve kind of gone crazy and guns ablazing,” Chan said of his competitors. “It’s easy to get distracted by what they’re doing. It’s ended up really hurting me. I’ve really made sure to keep repeating to myself to be selfish, don’t care about everyone else.

The word "selfish" could be interpreted negatively by some, but I think he means he is going to stop worrying about what others are doing and what they think, or having to keep up with them, and just concentrate on what he is doing.

“When you are 25, you have to be more careful,” Johnson said. “I’ve seen comebacks where people have done too much, too soon, and haven’t been able to maintain it.

“It’s not going to be panic mode. It’s going to be a little more measured on the road to 2018.”

His successes this season are proof that the unhurried, methodical process is working, even though we impatient skating fans want to see miracles right away. I think even he was impatient at first, because he worried too much about what his competitors were doing, but now he seems much more settled and confident in his direction, and I give Kathy a lot of credit for this. Very happy for him!

I agree that his aim should be to do two good performances and enjoy the OG , but I hope he will have the technical potential to be able to win them, whether he will succeed or not.(He has already had a fantastic and successful career, so he does not really need an indidual OGM, but it would be wonderful)

About tonight, Let's hope Patrick will do another FS like 4CC's one!! (the best male 2-quad FS in history, by the way)

It is always perfect when he skates and enters a big jump with good steady rhythm, no rushing nor hesitation.

I believe he will bring with him the happy and confident skating-for-myself mindset to the ice tonight as well as the comfortable perfect rhythm. Then he will give us another amazing performance.

Watching him in the practice group now. He just did a combo and it wasn't perfect. He looked mad at himself, but all I can think is KNOCK THEM OUT OF THE PARK WHEN IT COUNTS! Is it bad that I don't mind when he has a "bad" practice? I always feel her skates better when he does.
