Random Confessions

There's always been a large population of Polish, Czech, German, Slovak, Italian, Romanian, Austrian, etc. in Pittsburgh.
Philadelphia OTOH has more Irish, due to the immigration fleeing the famine in the 1840's.

Mmmm. So the exact opposite from what I deduced from el henry's example.

That this is the case is actually very interesting!

So, the city that has large populations from central Europe understands a typically Ulster phrase, but the city with a large Irish population doesn't.

Fascinating!

So interesting to hear that Pittsburghese sounds Irish to the Irish:biggrin: Ic3Rabbit is right, Pittsburghers are more central and Eastern European than any other, although of course there are some Irish.

Growing up in Philadelphia, before my travels "west", I wouldn't have had a clue what they were saying. Even though I have Henry's on both sides of the family and as far as I know, they all emigrated from Ireland in the 1850s (my great aunt once said we were from the county of Protestant whiskey. I'm have no idea what she meant or if she was making up stories--Protestant whiskey??? -- but it soundsgood:laugh:)

Well, LOL I'm sure there's plenty of Irish in Pittsburgh, but nothing like the eastern side of the state. I have relatives there and they talk like that and are not Irish, so I was really surprised when you said that a few posts up. :scratch2:

I know exactly what she meant (and I am sure most people here would work it out instantly too!)

The population of Country Antrim is prodominantly Protestant. It is also home of the Bushmills Whiskey Distillery. So, she was combining the two references into one handy phrase.

But, now you have started me wondering what the differences would be if there was separate Protestant Whiskey and Catholic Whiskey...

Sounds like as soon as the Europeans came into contact with us and heard our dulcit tones, they loved it so much that they started copying us!

Thank you so much for the explanation! I was never one of those Irish Americans who obsessed about my roots (I'm sure you know we have quite a few of those), but this is most interesting.

In fact, as an Ulsterman you may also find interesting, I have been told "You're of Protestant Irish descent? I didn't know that any *Protestant* Irish emigrated?" With a straight face, people have said this...

Maybe it's the whiskey:laugh2:

Confession:
I love Crocs shoes. I am a college student and I spent last summer and fall mostly wearing my crocs. For me they are soooooo cute, casual, neat, comfortable and have unique design. I was really surprised to find out that crocs are hated by the majority of people and i still don't understand the hate. #JusticeforCrocs #Justice4Harambe
Yes Yes Yes!!!
I'm sick of being Croc Shamed!!!

Regarding Coffee ...
I love it and it's now believed there are definite health benefits from regular consumption...
Don't mind making it, drinking it but HATE cleaning up... always such a godforsaken mess!!
I usually make it in a French Press... those who know me are horrified because, when the pot is finished, instead of emptying the old grounds washing it and starting fresh, I dump in more coffee grounds on top of the old, add boiling water and, voila, a "fresh" pot... I have been known to do this 3 times before finally cleaning the pot. Would do it a fourth time but, by that time, there is so much coffee in the bottom the press won't press.... I know...I know... :( :slink:

Seriously?! People genuinely think that?! :jaw:

If I were you, I probably would have said quite cheekily, "The famine didn't just affect the Catholics, you know!"

(Although, to be fair, it did affect them worse than it did us...)

More recently, quite a few relatives of both my parents (their cousins, uncles) have emigrated. Although, that was to Canada and Australia.

So, yes, Protestant Irish do emigrate.

I doubt you must be right about the whiskey. It's the only logical explanation for people having this train of thought... :agree:

it isn't for sale where I live... but this weekend, I may try it... honestly, I am not a great fan of ice wine... it's so sweet... but the thought of drinking Patrick's wine is quite appealing ;) will let you know if I manage to visit the liquor store while at nationals...
Have you drunk Patrick's ice wine then? ;)

Ah, I didn't realize it is so unavailable. But I think as Patrick uber, you should try it if you have a chance. Maybe you'll be positively suprised? ;) Have a good trip to Nationals!

Liquor Laws are pretty strict in Canada... as a limited product from Ontario, Patrick's wine is only available in Ontario...

my confession : yes I love Patrick but I am first and foremost an uber of figure skating in general ;) just happens Patrick is really really good at skating ;)

Do you cheer for Raonic or you have other favourites? :) I'm cheering for Dominic Thiem the most, but I also like the Swiss guys.
