Random Confessions

I must confess that nationalism is over my head. I've never once rooted for any athlete in any sport based on their nationality. I disappoint so many freinds come every Olympic Games. :o:

I'm biased to American skaters sometimes because it's easier for me to find info on them since I'm from the US. But I still cheer on other skaters a lot. Especially watching the skaters from small nations improve (like Mexico qualifying a ladies' skater to the JWs FS)

oh... i am a very mild nationalistic fan.... but since everyone is so loud here... we canadians are making sure we are heard ;) and it's rare that we have contenders in all 4 disciplines... very rare...

I don't see anything wrong with rooting for your home country. I guess...I'm just not prone to it or something :hslap:

Don't get me wrong though...I pull for American skaters if I can connect with them. Mariah and Polina have really become some of my favorite ladies skaters.

i don't connect with all canadian skaters... :) so i get that... right now though on the canadian team at worlds... I like all of them... of course... I like Patrick A LOT more than than any other skater in the world ;)

but i also like several skaters from many other countries.... even some in direct competition with my favourites from canada... i just like skating ;)

I think this is worth mentioning... the first olympic games i remember watching 1988... Calgary.. Canada did well in figure skating... 2 silvers, 1 bronze... not so well in general... but worst... after the disaster in terms of medals for canada in montreal 1976, Calgary also didn't bring any gold for canada...

Canada was indeed the only host country of the olympics to never have won a gold on home soil. in 2010, i was in vancouver... and canada won 14 golds and topped the medal board. it was an amazing awakening of sportive national pride.... before the discourse was "the important is to participate" we even had a home ranking back then that considered athletes in the top ten... ... but prior to 2010, the own the podium and then i believe campaigns changed everything... so while americans have been very successful in olympics or sports in general... it's a brand new thing for canada.

there ;)

my confession, now that i have answered sam....

i cannot stop eating lime and habanero chili peanuts... ugh....

It depends for me - a sport I follow like figure skating I don't care what country they skate for, I root for my favorite. If it's a sport I don't follow, like speed skating or ski jumping I will generally root for the American in the field.

I don't care about nationalities either. In fact, I wish they would do away with that whole aspect of the Olympics.

For me, the priority you should be competing in is:

  1. for yourself
  2. for your family
  3. for your coach
  4. for your club
  5. for your town
  6. for your county
  7. for your province / state
  8. for your country

Where you are from should just be a way of describing you. Not the be all and end all.

That said, because we are a small country, I can be known to bang the drum for competitors from Northern Ireland!

In sports where Northern Ireland does not have a big presence, I would tend to cheer our competitors on. Of course, there are sports where we are successful. But, I have to be honest, in most of the sports we are good at, I tend not to like our star performers. Because a lot of them get too cocky when they do well.

And, because I am from a small country, I do tend to support people from other small countries. Because I know how hard it is for people from small countries to get recognition and support.

There are certain countries that I do tend to support, even though I don't have any connection to them. Russia, Japan, Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic, to name a few.

But, on the whole, I support people I like, no matter where they are from.

Similair. The more I follow the sport, the less I'm inclined to cheer basically for my country. In FS there almost no Poles anyway, so I cheer for others all the time. But if I watch only occasionally, like WC or Olympic, I root for my countrymen, mostly because I had no idea what other competitiors are like.

random confession/thought of the day is...

...that I'm frustrated due to not being able to find shoes I'd like (I know I'm pathetic...:palmf:). Somehow, regarding clothes/shoes shopping, nothing is speaking to my taste buds when I have $$$ to spend, but million things is speaking to me loudly when I'm out of cash...And now, when I really need shoes to buy for really practical purposes (to have a change pair for work, nothing fancy, flats or oxford-like shoes), everything is too shiny, too stiff, too tight on my feet, glued poorly or just plian ugly for me:hopelessness:

random confession of the day : i have done all the levels of candy crush + the owl levels as well .... i am just crazy about crushing candy :)

Random confession: I've wanted to chase sunsets all week this past week, but I'm too lazy to go out and catch them.... (in my defense the sun sets around 9pm this time of year... by then I just want to be in PJs)

Everytime I finish good TV series or book series, I'm left with that empty feeling.... it takes me days or even weeks to get over it.

I have been spending too much time around you guys.

It has got to the stage that I am now referring to people I know by the Russian diminutives of their names.

For example, I have been friends with a girl called Alexandra for nigh on 17 years. But, a couple of months ago, I was thinking about her, and for a bit of fun I called her "Sasha" in my head. And that is how I think of her all the time now.

Thankfully, I have not called anybody a Russian name out loud yet. But, I know it is only a matter of time before one slips out.

P.S. By the way, this is the second time I have been talking about Sasha in this thread. But this is the first time I have referred to her by name... ;)
