Junior Nats SP gave us chapter two in the series Secret Moskvich Gang Handshakes (unfortunately bad camera angle):

Junior Nats FS was a wild ride, but in the end everything turned out well for Team Moskvich. :love2:
Andrei A. finished 6th which should secure him a spot in the junior national team next season and Kirill A. placed a respectable 11th and landed 4T-2T with +GOE. It's crazy how far he's come from just a year ago.

As for Ilya and his new layout with three different quads, he nearly sent me into a nervous breakdown. Only his gorgeous step sequence brought me back from the dead. 😅
I guess none of the boys will be satisfied with how they skated today, but it's still mission accomplished for everyone of them and many more exciting competitions they can work towards.
And off to JWC for the new Russian Junior National Champion Ilya!

The boys really gave me a fright there! But Coach Vika looks amazingly unfazed as always 😅
I had a rather farfetched hope for Christmas Kirill to make the junior national team, so more people could enjoy his wacky music choices 🙈 Oh well...

But Coach Vika looks amazingly unfazed as always
Coach Vika just is amazing, period.
I had to chuckle when Kirill wanted to escape from the K&C and she told him in no uncertain terms to stay put as long as they were on camera. Let's hope he skates well at novice nationals and gets invited to test skates. A JGP assignment next season might not be out of reach if he stabilizes the 4T.

In an unexpected turn of events (oh who am I kidding, this is so typical) RusFed decided they need another "skate-off" at RCF before JWC assignments. Personally, I see no option for a JWC team that doesn't include Ilya, but whatever. Better not dwell on this but celebrate Ilya's gold medal (this is the last picture, I promise).

And Ilya's statement after the FS from the federation homepage:
- I'm shocked. I didn't expect it [the gold medal] because the free skate was disgusting. But this is luck, because in our sport, as in every sport, a medal is important. I understand that everyone can succeed in something, and sometimes something does not work. But we must move on, must not stop. Because it wasn't just me who had a bad skate today. It happened to lot of people. If the guys had skated better, I would have flown by the podium altogether. I understand that very well. And I think I must move forward so as not to repeat such mistakes. So that I am not ashamed of my work. My coach was not ashamed. Not that it's embarrassing, but I don't want to let the coach down. Viktoria Evgenievna puts all her soul into me, puts all herself into this business, and today I let her down.
But let's hope in the future everything will work out. It is necessary to skate the free program with quadruple jumps, to work so that everything turns out to be stable. In this tournament, I tried a quadruple salchow. It's not very stable yet, so perhaps the fall led to other errors on the quads. But, as I said, we need to work, to do well at competitions. In training, I skate the program with quads almost cleanly, and it is necessary to do this at competitions.

An interview with Butsaeva
Thanks so much for sharing, that was a long and interesting read!

It's a bit concerning that every time they go to a major competition half of the group comes back ill. This has me worried again for Ilya skating at RCF, he has to be 100% healthy for JWC and fight for a medal there. The competition is strong, but it's men's and everything can happen when they all go for their most difficult content. Ilya should really aim for the senior national team next season, he already skates like a grown man and would look out of place competing with the 14- and 15-year olds for another year. Strategically it also makes sense to make the transition to seniors in the post-Olympic season, where the field might well be a bit less crowded.

As for Vika Butsaeva, I admire how she keeps working and improving with her students while staying relatively low-profile amidst all the Russian figure skating drama. From the outside looking in (and of course only able to judge from the limited interaction I see on TV) she seems to care about her athletes and not just their results, and they seem to genuinely like her in return. She is obviously also aware that there is no instant gratification in coaching guys. They don't go out at the age of 15 and win all the major titles like the Russian ladies do. The guys are more like a good wine that gets better with age. Sometimes I suspect that some other coaches and indeed the federation do not quite comprehend or appreciate this.

Anyway, not a single snide remark was made about anyone in this whole interview, it is a rarity in the Russian figure skating press canon.

Everyone and the TV commentators during the Olympics: Gasp, a 4Lo! That jump is so rare, only 3 men in the world can do it.
The selected group of Team Moskvich fans: :sneaky:

Edit: Btw, Andrei A. and Kirill A. are scheduled to skate this week (8-9th) for the Prizes of Tchaikovskaya.

Yay, go A team! Hope there'll be a video stream 🤞
Unfortunately the A team has disappeared from the entry list published today.
But there are still three Moskvich boys competing in juniors. Go, next generation of dark horses!

Edit: Shame on me, I overlooked Ruslan Nasarov competing in seniors for Moskvich. Smooth ice and good luck!

#MoreMedalsforMoskvich :jump:

The Moscow Novice (elder age) Championships were a huge success for the Moskvich boys, with Kirill A., Kirill K., and Timofey S. placing among the top 6 and qualifying for Novice Nationals. Some impressions from the event as always courtesy of iraandfox on instagram:

The Kirills in the SP (featuring @anonymoose_au's favourite potted palm tree).

Timofey S. 🥉 and the podium: https://www.instagram.com/p/CaHbJOhIbBs/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

I must say, Timofey is the discovery of the season among juniors for me. The boy has some serious skating and performance qualities. Proof of that is that he keeps skating onto the podium without a 3A or quad (I'm sure he'll learn those in due time). He also won a silver medal at the Prizes of Tchaikovskaya last week. :points:

A sweet moment with Moskvich alumnus and Russian Cup Final bronze medalist Matvei Vetlugin taking pictures of silver medalist Alexey Erokhov and his coaches. As usual, coach Murad Kurbanov somehow ended up with the medal.

After this week a new hashtag is in order #MoreQuadsForMoskvich!
Here is Alexey's 4F: https://www.instagram.com/p/CanEWlsvVPT/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
And Andrei's 4Lo: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cap6-I6OIBH/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
What do Ilya and Kirill have in store for us?

There is also a new instagram account turnir_moskvich with dedicated posts about competitions at Moskvich rink, most recently the prizes of Viktor Kudriavtsev. Their pictures have just the right amount of Moskvich weirdness going on that I find so entertaining and endearing. Just check this out: the podium girls get unicorn stuffies and the boys get... avocados? 🥑

Good luck and clean skates to the boys at Novice Nats! There's a national title to defend for Moskvich, and they can do it. :cheer2:🍀

ETA: Come to think of it, Butsaeva had three guys in Senior Nats, three in Junior Nats, and now has three? (not sure if Stolyarenko trains in her group) in Novice Nats. Her senior men also won one third (6/18) of all the Cup of Russia medals in their discipline this season. Quite an achievement!

I'm especially happy for Kirill the elder, who struggled a bit in his last competitions. Hope this medal gives him a confidence boost!

Next week we have the Prizes of the SPB Fed to look forward to, with the participation of Andrei A., both Kirills, and more! Smooth ice and clean skates! 🍀⛸️
