Tyler Pierce

Tyler Pierce was born October 12 1998 in Whittier, California, and is an American figure skater. She has won two medals on the ISU Challenger Series – bronze at the 2015 Ice Challenge and 2015 Tallinn Trophy. She is the 2014 U.S. national junior silver medalist.

Seems this lady doesn't have a Fan Fest yet, so here's a start....

Tyler Pierce recently finished in third place after the short program at U.S. Nationals 2016, and fifth overall.

I really hope Tyler does well at Junior Worlds and uses it for a great learning experience. I think next season could be the big breakout for her.

Tyler just needs to work on her PCS, the "polish" of each of her skills, and her footwork. It looks like she only got a Level 2 on for FS at Nationals.

Looks like Tyler did it!! I.e. beating the 35 pts min TES at Bavarian Open juniors & thus qualifying for JW. Am confident that this outing to JW should be much better than the previous ones!

We had to go back to the basics and correct my jumping technique. When I made the necessary corrections, I started to regain my confidence." Yikes. Pretty strong statements with a bit of shade seemingly thrown in then...?

Anyone have any insight? She gives the requisite "some coaches don't work for some people blah blah" but I'm interested to hear more. I've only heard great things about 7K...

I'm going to give Tyler the benefit of the doubt: I think she was referring to more about how Kori's coaching style affected her skating rather and she was not holding her responsible for technique issues. I believe those issues existed long before she went to 7k. She wasn't with Kori long enough to resolve them -- nor long enough, as you guys point there, to make it worse.

I also recall that Tyler said sometime previously that she was homesick for S. California as well.

Kori's style is not for everyone. In hindsight, she may had been pushing Tyler too much. I remember in her TSL interview that she was trying to challenge Tyler with more complex choreography. If there were technique issues, that might have been way to much. Maybe Kori thought she could handle it, but maybe that turned out not to be the case.

In any case, best of luck to Tyler this week!

I think Mrs. P summed up my feeling rather well. She was not there that long, and Kori is not for everyone.

I would like to add that it is not unheard of or unreasonable to take something of a one step back two steps forward approach to a coaching change. It does not seem that strange that skaters might feel a bit behind when they first switch to a new coach. Hanna Miller sounded like she made some comments to this effect earlier this season regarding her switch, but she stuck with it and did very respectably at Nationals. If Kori was looking at a 2 year plan for Tyler, and Tyler bailed after 8 months, it makes sense that Tyler might feel she was set back and that her "skating suffered" as it was just at a point in "the process" where that was normal and expected.

It just seems logical that if you are rebuilding a skaters technique, there is going to be a point where the skater feels they are doing worse.

I feel much the same, but I also hope someone politely points out to her how unprofessional saying things like "My skating was adversely affected by the coaching change" can be and that you don't say that unless you actually do want to deliberately say something to make them look bad.

She may be young but she is not too young to start learning this stuff. And frankly given her potential, she needs to get a crash course on how to deal with the media. She needs to frankly be shown how stuff like this can come across like she is saying Kori's coaching was bad. And she needs to start understanding what saying stuff like that really means long term .... maybe I am giving her probation rather than a pass.

I also want to add that Kori is not infallible. And in theory if Tyler wants to criticize, well free speech and all - so long as she understands that stuff like that can have consequences. I just would rather her do it directly and bluntly than by throwing shade. I would rather something specific that did not work for her, than the vague lines that you can't tell if they are trying to being kind, or are being kind. Few things in life should be done halfway, including when you want to criticize.
