Why wasn't Malinin selected for the Olympics?

Ilia looks like everything is clicking right now, but the 222 (I think) he scored at Cup of Austria - and the poor Short Program (13th, 67 pts) - didn’t help…even if it was his first senior outing of the season - it was November. I think he ran out of time to demonstrate his ability to deliver a top 10 senior score among international judges.

Exactly. And that was a decision he and his team made. He could have skated at say, Cranberry as a senior, asked USFS for Challenger and Senior B assignments, competed for the host pick at Skate America, and created a BOW leading up to Nationals. The fact that they did not do these things leads me to believe that they did not believe obtaining a spot on the Olympic team was attainable this season. We have 3 of the 10 best male skaters in the world.

Instead he chose to skate on the JGP. Which is a perfectly valid choice. But not for making the Olympic team in a field we are very deep in.

Ilia skated on the JGP this season because that was his only option. Ilia did go to JW 2020, but was 16th (he was only 15 at the time and his basic skating needed work). Then JGP 20-21 and JW 21 were both cancelled. He did get invited to SA 2020, and he placed a creditable 5th there. Ilia couldn't get GP invitations this season because he didn't fit any of the criteria (top 24 on world standings or SB list). Sure, he could have gone to Challengers or Senior Bs, but without some kind of recognition by ISU judges, he wouldn't necessarily have done well. But he was the top JGP skater this season, and would have very likely won the JGPF if it hadn't been cancelled. I am sure that his JGP successes helped him land on the podium at the Austrian Challenger.

Like many other young athletes, Ilia's development as a competitive skater was compromised to some extent due to the crud. But when he had nowhere to compete, he worked on his basic skating and improved his spins so much. In 2020, his spins were awful, and now they are exceptionally good, and he has mastered a number of different quads, including 4z and 4lo. His performance at 2022 Nationals was no surprise to me.

No. It is 3+3 or 4+3 or 3+4

It is, but according to Scherbakova, at least, it won't give you much of an advantage.

If a 3/3 is allowed, and skaters now do 4/2 and 4/3, I see no reason why a 4/4 should be disallowed. But the rules would have to be updated.
And why allow 4t+4t only? why not 4z+4t?

It is disallowed under current rules partly as they didn't consider a 4-4 existence. Similar to no quint BV.
The rules specifically need to be updated to account for quad quads.

He jumped a 4T a few times but I wouldn't really say he "had" a quad in the sense that a consistent quad jumper "has" a quad.
I think he got prize for most painful fall in 2014 Olympics.

I believe Jeremy did accomplish a few quads in his career, his best being at US nationals, hitting a couple here and there.
He wasn't known as a technical skater to say the least

Jeremy was a really enjoyable skater, saw his skating at Finlandia Trophy early in his career and became a fan at once.

About Ilia: He would have been a great addition to the team of Chen and Zhou, because he was at top condition now at Nationals, which are so close to the Olympics...
