2015 Four Continents Men's Short Program Feb 12 Seoul Time

The high point of this competition is the validation of potential of some of the very talented skaters. Even the disappointed/disappointing ones are just experiencing the learning pains of debuting their quads.

I hope the LP event will be as uplifting.

My gut tells me unless Jason makes some big time technical improvements (and I'm not just talking about the quad) Very soon Farris is going to take off and leave the rest of the US men in his dust. He's by far the strongest jumper and is such a beautiful skater.

I think both have their strengths and weaknesses. That's why they have been tossing placements since they were juveniles. And I think that pattern will continue.

Jason has been behind Josh technically forever and a day, but somehow, he's managed to keep up in some way. I expect that to continue as well.

I've watched both Jason Brown and Denis Ten, and what I want say is about the layout before the quad. Denis had an amazing beautiful program...and for his first jump he did crossovers, gained speed, did a turn and jumped (beautiful quad). Jason had a more elaborate step sequence, where he didn't drop speed but didn't gain either, then did the turns and jumped. You need a different skill to be able to do big jumps with less speed. Emanuel Sandhu was good at that, probably due to his ballet training. Jason is not in the same league. Hopefully his team sort this out. I am happy for Denis for such a good program. I wish everybody good luck in the LP.

Denis and Shoma! Hurrah such beautiful performances! (I'm happy <: )

And I guess wow, I must keep a watchful eye on US men at worlds.... seems like this technical component is going to be interesting!

Finally I could make a time to watch the 4CC competitions, but couldn't resist to peek the results first.

And wow:jaw: (we still need a new emoticon showing eye popping :))

Congratulations to :cheer:
Denis Ten, 97!!!! the number is huge!
Shoma Uno, wow, 10 points beyond your PB
Yan Han, FINALLY FINALLY YOU MADE IT :hopelessness:
Takahito Mura, OK, you're going back to yourself again
Joshua Farris, SB for you, you're the only US men getting close to the podium contention.
Daisuke Murakami, given you making SB, you did a good job, I guess?
Misha Ge, you can go up to the placement with quads, love it.
Jeremy Ten, your momentum stayed on
Yi Wang, you're going back to yourself with quads.
Liam Firus!! I like your changed SP, and made some progress. Good job.

I know this is quite a long list, but I'm really glad to see that many of the listed guys are making big progress out of their own seemingly endless struggles.:cheer2:

These are just the top PBs right? I know Hanyu and Chan both have at least one more score each above Ten's.

But that's absolutely taking nothing away from Ten's performance. In fact, the men as a whole can be proud of themselves today, that was a good competition.

Now the question is, who can repeat that success in the free :hopelessness: I hope this doesn't turn into a men's TEB 2014 event again...

Hanyu has 99+ in GPF 2013 and in OLM team SP
Paddy has 98.37 in W2013

^ Me too :jaw: After the shock of the icedance placements, I had a feeling this competition would be totally unpredictable! I am so happy for all of them that skated well...[but heart broken for me in my prediction game:drama:] U never know till the end, ice is slippery, vicious and fickle! Here is to a greater free skate!

We have the 'eek' one

p.s. personally, I would love a coffee one : ) I'd be using that one quite a lot, lol

Very pleased to see nice clean skates from our Japanese boys and all three making the final flight in the free. Job well done, boys!, especially to Shoma & Dice for new SB/PBs.
A bit surprised none of Adam, Jason and Nam made it to the final flight, though. Tech panel was harsh on Adam and Jason this time, unlike US Nats.

A huge score to D10! He gets so much love from int'l judges. They probably want either Denis or Javi to win the world title, if not Yuzuru, me think?
Loved Misha! This season I love his serious competitive look on ice in particular. His jump technique improved quite a lot, too. Kudos to Misha and his dad.

Overall, a very good competition tonight! Hope to see they repeat it in the free. :)

I don't know if I am the only one, but Daisuke Murakami reminds me of older, awesome Daisuke. Shoma reminds me of not so old Yzuru Hanyu...Weird resemblance!

I was mildly horrified when I heard that Jason was going for a quad, pffft no rush this season, at least not in the SP, should have skated a clean SP, landed himself in the last group and attempt a quad if he really want in the LP, that way if he makes a mistake, he can make it up for it and judges are less likely to hold back on their PCS scores.

Anyway I'm cheering for Han Yan tomorrow, I want him to win a medal and get redemption! And I hope Denis Ten will hold it together, he's got a great lead and I do like his LP.

As usual Jason (and his team) likes to march to a different drummer. :)

Also his FS has a relatively new layout and it's backloaded with a second 3A, a 3F-3T and a 3Z-1L-3S that's in like the last 45 seconds of the program. Not to mention that he has yet to have that program completely clean all season. Can you imagine trying to add a quad to that?! We're not talking about Yuzuru Hanyu here.

He's had the same relatively SP layout for two seasons, and I think they saw an opportunity to try something new. I'ts seriously not the end of the world if he doesn't medal at 4CC.

I just got home and watched Denis's performance...it's the second time (after WC 2013) when this boy brings tears to my eyes. Please, Denis, clean free skate too :drama:

No weirder than Russia being European.

I don't think it's weird. Russia's territory lies in both Europe and Asia, so it has to choose one. Since its capitol and largest cities are on the European side, it's usually included in Europe (and historically, of course, it has participated in and often dominated the more prestigious European Championships for a long time, so I can see why it would continue to take part in those championships). Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are both in Central Asia, so it makes sense for them to participate in the Four Continents Championships.

Woah, it looks like the 4CC guys took a look at Europeans and went, "Oh no, we don't want to be like that!"

D. Ten: I admit I'm not the big fan like everyone else seems to be, but he does have many great qualities: airy jumps, wonderful flow and speed, and a true donut spin (not the cruddy catchfoots done by the other men). The lyrics work when he actually hits the elements. :) I hope he wins a World title sometime in his career, because he totally deserves it.

Uno: Surprised by how much the judges went with him! I thought he'd get the newbie PCS, but he received high scores--well-deserved, as his speed and SS are top notch despite his size. I guess beating Kozuka, Machida, and Mura at Nationals does have its benefits. :p

Yan: So happy for him! Mistake on the quad, but it didn't look too bad in the air. On another day, he would've landed it. I also loved how much ice he covered, and how he gained speed effortlessly, on the step sequence. Music is still hard to swallow; hair, um, might need fixing... but he does sell the program to the best of his ability.

Mura: Almost the opposite of the D10 situation for me. So many things I dislike about him (music cuts, choreography, poor timing)... but for some reason I like him anyway. Maybe it's his presence and huge jumps--that quad looked like it was going to fly over the boards. Maybe he needs to tone it down a little, the big jumps do seem hard to control.

Farris: If Mura is about power, then Josh is about ease. His timing is impeccable, and with every bit of choreography, he gives the sense that everything is easy to him. The judges really got behind him too! If he adds a quad to the SP, considering the corresponding PCS boost, he could be fighting for World medals. Only slight issue is that he does seem slower than the Japanese men, D10, and Han Yan.

Murakami: He skated really well. But 4S-2T is just the kiss of death when other people go clean. He won't have such a handicap in the free though, so I'm curious what he'll bring.

I'm happy for Misha and Jeremy, who both received well-deserved SBs. Jason, Nam, Adam... Well, it's the price you pay. The quad should be high-risk, high-reward (even if I'd weigh the risk more heavily on falling, rather than rotation). Of the three, I actually think Adam performed his SP the best and didn't let his mistakes ruin the routine... but again, rotation killed him.

I don't know if I am the only one, but Daisuke Murakami reminds me of older, awesome Daisuke. Shoma reminds me of not so old Yzuru Hanyu...Weird resemblance!

I think Daisuke Murakami looks like a cross between Daisuke Takahashi and Max Aaron. I know that sounds weird, but I think he has the same smile as Max!

Denis Ten!!! It was heaven for me!!! He is soooooo natural! With such a grand music, he skates light, ethereal, beautiful, brilliant,,,, I can watch his skating all day long! I am so so happy for him. Please, please keep up the momentum for the lp. I even more like his lp this season, so original, something only he can do it! He seldom shows his 100%, but when he is on, he is everything and beyond.:bow:

Shoma! love his musicality, interpretation! So sincere and pure! he reminds me of Daisuke. :agree:
Han! clean, precise jump technique! his 3a is just to die for! Welcome back!

Joshua~! Give Love!!! He was so gentle and lovely. He makes me smile.

I just had a chance to watch it, and omg Denis Ten!  That was beautiful, absolutely beautiful!

Keep it up in the long program, Denis!

I'ts seriously not the end of the world if he doesn't medal at 4CC.

True, 4CC in't not such a big deal tbh, but I just don't want him to do it because maybe he feels the pressure from outside. Everybody is going a bit crazy with this quad thing.

I don't get that vibe at all, at least from statements.

I am excited. My goal was that I wanted to integrate a quad and do it to the best of my ability in that moment and once it was over, leave it there and continue on. I’m really proud of that and I’m proud that I tried it.

(on when he decided to do quad in short) It was right after the U.S. Championships. Kori looked at me and was like, ‘when we go to Four Continents, you’re going to do a quad toe.’ And I was like, ‘ok, if you say so.’ It’s one of those jumps that’s really coming along and at home it’s getting more and more consistent. There is no better time to try it than right now and leading up to worlds and try to see how it goes. If it does get more consistent for worlds, I can look back and know that I’ve tried it before in competition.

We weren’t really focused on score today. We were focused on what I can do with what we’re putting out. We had no idea where I would stand. For the long it’s a new day to start fresh.
