2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

Well, we did get Michal's Game of Thrones last season, and at least a couple other guys used your favorite, Two Step From Hell. I don't necessarily want to see The Matrix or Gladiator again, but there is no reason why there can't still be room for that kind of style. Variety is the spice of life and I would be very bored - nay, comatose - if everyone started skating to piano music or sappy love songs.

Ksenia Monko / Kirill Khaliavin
SD: Howl's moving castle (Merry-go-Round?) Joe Hisaishi; choreo by Zhulin, Petuhov.
FD: Nathan Lanier composition; choreo by Zhulin, Petuhov.

AH! Very excited! Howl's Moving Castle is great, and Nathan Lanier composed Humanity in Motion, aka Weapo's FD music in the 2012-2013 season. Very interested to see what they do with their choices!

Why didn't we get a bunch of Lord of the Rings programs when that series was a hit?

ROTFL, we must be on the same wavelength in half of our posts. This was the one exception I was thinking about when I was typing my response. (That I don't recall a Lord of the Rings inundation as opposed to all the Gladiator & Titanic programs we had before). Perhaps it's because not many guys picture themselves as hobbits or wearing elf ears? I can totally see Keegan Messing as a fantastic hobbit though!

There were more than enough epic heroic Men in Lord of the Ring to make a skating program... Though I personally would love to see someone try to portray Gandalf  But yeah, it's odd how that series did not spawn dozens of programs.

Two words: GOLLUM PROGRAM :laugh2:

Max was the Gladiator last year.

I have no idea but I am extremely disappointed.

There are some good soundtracks out there still. Hans Zimmer's one for Rush was particularly good. But that movie didn't even get nominations at Oscar time when there were several categories it could have and probably should have won (I'm thinking of Daniel Bruhl as Niki Lauda - he did an absolutely amazing job). I guess actual proper motorsport movies don't get any love.

omg +1000 for Lord of the Rings programs, imho quite a lot of different possibilities for everybody - men, ladies and pairs.

Even for ladies! There are very few ladies in LOTR but the few there are are gorgeous and not at all hobbit-like. Heck, I would've been happy for someone to skate to the music alone, without playing a character, since the music is gorgeous regardless of context.

I'm assuming there's perhaps a bias against fantasy in skating? Maybe fantasy film soundtracks could be deemed as "unsophisticated"--considering how rare it is for a fantasy film to win an Oscar for the same reason.

And lady could play a hobbit too IMO, even easier than man.

I can't imagine LotR being deemed more unsophisticated than any of the action flicks from that era. These movies were pretty damn acclaimed.:confused2: Plus there are Game of Thrones programs as mentioned above, Dracula pops up so etimes I believe, Hanyu is doing a fantasy soundtrack this season so it doesn't seem that fantasy is a deterrent. Good question for an interview with a prolific choreographer.

(I've just come out of rewatching the Hobbit trilogy, and I love the Laketown music; it would be so awesome if someone portrayed Bard together with his fight with the dragon. It could be a great program for a man and amazing for a pair or dance team with one of the partners playing the dragon.)

Very interesting choices for all the Russian Ice Dancers. I don't believe Zueva though. There are many other waltzes that could have been chosen. Why invite the comparisons to I/K or more specifically Ilinykh? Obviously compared to 2014 Nikita would have improved tremendously given that he now has actual choreography. Victoria is also not standing in place. It's like they want to court the drama and comparisons, why?

I guess they tried to find something save, but also recognizable to the judges. The choice for their FD seems odd, though.

Marta25, as you can see. I thought it best to not go there.

As for the FD the music doesn't move me but it seems to be there style, very aristocratic. Their fans should like. Maybe something similar to last years EX.

Victoria Sinitsina & Nikita Katsalapov RUS

SD Tchaikovsky "Swan Lake"
FD Andrea Bocelli (feat. Lang Lang on piano) "Io Ci Saro"?

Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang... they must have been really determined to choose the worst of both worlds

the SD is strange to me because it was I/K's Olympic program and I thought Elena carried most of it, it'll be interesting to see how it turns out

I thought the same thing. Considering that there's a plethora of waltzes out there, they had to choose something from Swan Lake? Does Zueva wish to remind the judges that it's still the same Katsalapov who won the bronze medal at the Olympics? But I don't think the lady substitution will work in their favor at all. Besides, the Olympics program was really interesting, while an SD to waltz from there will probably look conventional - similar to many other SDs and to their own Exhibition program from last year.

I think they want to be talked about, so that they won't be forgotten in the mix for the team. Plus, maybe he really really wanted to be the one to have all the attention in Swan Lake, so now it's his chance.
But the way Zueva described their FD, by using the lyrics, 'I'll stay with you no matter what', makes me think it's like the team cares more about how they are perceived by fans than what they can achieve. I guess we will see in time, the FD choice to me seems like a mixture of VM and PC's FD from this past season, open program, trying to show lines, it's kind of easier to interpret if you have technical problems, but it can become generic. If it's Io ci saro of course
