2015 Finlandia Trophy Ladies SP and FS

Rika Hongo has taken every opportunity given and has run with it. For me is bittersweet beacause as her star rises, I see one of my favorites fading Kanako Murakami. Anything can happened, but as of right know she is not even in top 3 Japanese lady.

I am happy for Rika

 I felt the exact same way. Kanako is one of my favourites along with Ashley and I see my skaters' chances fading away. At least Ashley is (likely) going to Worlds but Kanako is... Still, I really like Rika's both programs and feel happy for her. Just wish Kanako was as consistent as Rika...

Being polite in public is a common policy, it is not attributed to cultural differences.;)

But what is polite may differ from culture to culture.
For example, in Russia, specially in smaller cities, people may get offended if you smile at them on the street, as it means you find something about them funny / laughable.

Yes, also her jumps are pretty much gone, she can't rotate most of them to save her life. I like Kanako, but there is no point denying the truth. I honestly think this would be a good time for her to retire.

I never understood why she didn't leave her coach. I know she is legendary, but not the best jump coach. Midori was the exception beacause she was a out this world gifted jumper.

Just watched a few videos, big congrats to Rika.:agree::love::cheer: Should have earned the highest PCS in this comp for sure!
Also, big shout out to Hannah, lovely program, music, choreo and costume both SP and LP, wish she can perform them cleaner in the future:cheer:

Some posters here are implying that she seemed to physically threaten them??? Which just sounds absurd.

Basically she came across as a little standoffish, not looking at them as she took the gifts, and being quite heavy handed when putting them down. You'd think she had given them the finger the way some people are going on.

Where's the medal ceremony? Are they not going to broadcast it?

I'm sure evil Julia will ditch it again. ;)

I'm not sure if it was actually "physically threatening" for the girls, b/c I'm obviously not one of the girls. But they certainly seemed very cautious afterall b/c of lip's attitude. poor beings :( hope these people just know the fact that those girls are also "skaters" not only lipnitskaya.

We are not talking about being on street in a small Russian town here, right?

Btw, whoever said that Rika reminds them of Elena Radionova :agree:. Neither of them are very refined or sophisticated and both of them really, really need to work on their posture, but they are both very consistent ladies who know how to sell the heck out of a performance!

I know, right? I actually wish Elena had something similar to Rika's programs/music choices, b/c I could see Elena doing a spectacular job! Unfortunately, I am not a fan of Elena's programs based on the Russian test skates, and feel like the music (esp. Titanic) is way beneath her ability, but maybe I will change my mind when I see them for competition. Somehow, I think that is unlikely b/c I thought Elena did a very good job at test skates- it's not her, it's definitely the music :hopelessness:

Heavy handed with toys- correct, giving them finger- excuse me?

I am only going to say one more thing- the allegation that Julia 'physically threatened' the girls is not just absurd but a flat out lie. I defy anyone to find me a clip (they are posted on youtube already, so you go there and find it if you can) of her making any kind of threat whatsoever be it physical, verbal, a gesture... If you don't like how she acted, I also think that's absurd, but that's a valid opinion to have, and fine. I clearly won't change your mind. To lie and say she threatened someone is not fine.

This is all.

I kind of get what people are saying. I found an HQ video of her skate. I tried to post it here but it would not copy the link. I don't have a problem if she doesn't want to smile or say thank you. She seems to be a perfectionist and was probably angry at herself. I do however have problem with her snatching her flowers and gifts out of the girls hands. And chucking them on the couch. That was completely unnecessary.

Of course I prefer skaters to be positive and friendly to their fans and little flower girls, like Joshi was. (Joshi seems like a such a sweetheart omg. I'm a fan now.) After all, these ladies are role models for so many little girls! But it must be very difficult for someone like Yulia who was thrust into the public's gaze when maybe she doesn't want to be a role model, she just wants to skate.

There's no need to make a huge deal about it. Yulia could've been nicer, it's a shame she wasn't. That's about it.

My Mom was watching a few skaters with me including Yulia and Rika. She was surprised with the different attitude towards flower and toys girls from Yulia and Rika (and also from Serghey and Ryuju Hino). Like- why didn't Yulia at least thank those girls or bow at least one time, give them a smile. That is really not good from PR point of view. I think it's the attitude problem and somebody should teach Yulia to act different because it's daunting to her image. People love her so much and it is really not that much to thank everyone with a smile, and then get bored and pissed off because the skate wasn't really that awesome.
It does not mean that I don't like her or anything- but this kind of behaviour should disappear as long as she's on public. She really needs that from the sponsorship point of view too. Nice and polite, no matter what. If she's a huge fan of Mr. Hanyu- that's something she could learn from him.;)

Its hard to explain...

As someone who has the chance to really get close to skaters, you see differences of course, especially between countries. There are skaters, who thank everyone after their practice skate, they even bow to the wall, make sure every photographer gets the perfect picture, they don't forget arrangements... - it´s what they were taught of right from the beginning. You can see this with NA skaters, but also the Fins and to some degree Russians. Then again, you have skaters that only bow their coach, smile into a single camera or run off ;)

It´s nothing you should feel offended by really,

as I said... if a skater might not bow, smile or shake hands - then this is not because they don't like you, the flower girls ... It´s just something they don't feel comfortable with or know. Most of these skaters have a really big heart, but even so, you can not expect to get entrance there at all times. Ask yourself how many people you let into your heart or make time for or greet when you get to the office.

I think,

don't judge too hard, she is a really nice young lady, but shy and under a lot of pressure.

To Fans who are advocating Julia's action

Then do you think the flower girls deserved to face rudeness from a person they didn't know at all physically? Just curious... I do agree that Julia is a human being and have a right to express her feeling. But, at same time, Julia is clearly a celebrity in figure skating world and she certainly has an obligation to keep her manners to other people especially at a public place... This is not the first time she've acted like this either :p Hope she show some manners disregarding her performance. I am not asking for "genuine smiles" like Gracie Gold and Ashley Wagner do. Julia is not that young either in skating world... Being "sad or disappointed" and "childish" are completely different by the way

The question would be,

was it rude?

I have not followed the stream much, but I can imagine what happened / or not happened for that matter.

Any athlete, be it a famous or lesser known one, has a right to express her / his feelings. I can tell you stories about Roger Federer, that are well known and criticized - yet accepted. This acceptance I wish, Figure Skaters would receive as well, especially from her "fans".

I don't want to lecture anyone here, but skaters do read things at the net and how would you feel if you just missed a victory or didn't perform well and now you get trashed in the net, for not smiling? As far I can tell, we should all try to see the positives in things and not so much the negatives.
The expectations that fans have of their "idols" always being ready for selfies, signatures or chats on FB is wrong. Wrong, as these athletes have any right to refuse or feel unhappy whenever they want to. Yes, maybe it´s unprofessional - but what do we want? Robots, who always serve our needs, or real people with their ups and downs?

Don't get me wrong, of course it could mean the world to those flower kids to get a smile, or to the fan to get the signature - but this is just one side of the picture and we shouldn't forget the athletes feelings either.

At most events, flower kids will be able to get signatures, pictures ... backstage, it´s not like they saw Yulia once in their life at the K&C and now never again. ;)

No offense, but I hope Yulia never smiles like Gracie. Most of the time Gracie's smile looks forced and not genuine at all (at least to me).

Yes, how dare these foreigners not know how one is expected to act in every perceivable location. It's just scandalous these girls don't spend less time skating, and more time in some 1800s style etiquette school. *Shakes fist*
