2016 Four Continents Ladies Free Skate

The only three people in the top 12 who actually skated as well as it was possible for them to skate (leaving scores and any 'wrong calls' people think the tech panel made aside, since either way they did skate as well as they were actually capable of skating) are Satoko and Mirai and maybe Choi. Everyone else choked to vastly varying degrees.

:scowl:

They have to be joking. They gave that opening combination of Nagasu's?!

LOL...Fuji TV cut off her interview to show a replay of Satoko's skate.

Kevin Reynolds speaks better Japanese than Mirai.

I wished I had Japanese TV to listen to Kevin's Japanese. It's a Herculean task to juggle between an elite sport and learning a foreign language to the fluent level, and it's another thing to speak that foreign language in front of a big crowd. Hats off to the guy.

Gracie got the "e" for the lip again otherwise she'd be in fourth. :hopelessness:

I know I know can't compare different competition and all, Evgenia scored higher with a fall, including a 3 point advantage in PCS.

I paid more attention to the jumps this time due to all the talk of pre-rotations, but even as a fan of more dramatic and expressive performers I thought Satoko's skating was so much more polished and delicate than the rest of the ladies here even with her hovering twizzles (aka small jumps). I can't explain why but at no point did I feel like I was pulling an imaginary rope to get her to the end of the program like I did with everyone else. Although I rooted for Mirai by default, and she did so well, during her program I was pressing my foot on the floor as if I were driving up a steep hill in a sputtering car.

Satoko's consistency is so ridiculously money right now. I need that as a viewer because a lot of these skaters are seriously killing my stomach lining.

I really hope this season is just the start of good things and muitiple successful competitions per season happening for Mirai. She's improved so much in the last year. Hopefully she can build on this success for next season, and who knows? Don't count her out for 2018. :)

I highly doubt this is true since Japanes is the only language her mom speaks and so is the only way she can communicate with her mom. While there might be dialectic or accent issues of some kind going on, I just don't believe Mirai's Japanese is bad.

Think what you like, but she stumbled over her words, and her response to the second question made it seem like she didn't understand what she was being asked.

Even with that horrible SP if Gracie had simply went out there and attacked and not been a wimp she would have made the podium easily. 3rd in the LP with that skate tells you how bad the competition was and still she didn't medal.

It mostly tells you how much she was overscored. Having Kaetlyn Osmond(who actually skated to the music) 3 points behind Gracie in PCS was a joke.

Anyway, congratulations to Satoko, Mirai and Rika! It's wonderful to see Mirai getting her confidence back.

Gracie and 4CC just don't mix, lol. Congrats to Satoko, Mirai and Rika. Onward to Boston!

It's understandable but her phrasing, word choice and grammar sound like she learns from the textbook. Not to knock on her efforts since I know how hard it is to learn and maintain a secondary language, even if you frequently speak it with your parents.

Right! Watching her is so relaxing. I never have to hold my breath and pray she stays on her feet. If Karl Malone is the mail man, Satoko is the lead mail lady. :P

Thoughts overall:

1. Mirai!!! :cheer: :jaw:

2. Gracie was gifted 5th. Osmond should definitely be above her so I think the highest you could argue she should actually be is 6th, but I personally think a strong argument could be made that she should be as low as 9th. It was great to see her and Mirai chatting it up in K&C though :)

3. Overall this was an extremely underwhelming event. The only three people in the top 12 who actually skated as well as it was possible for them to skate (leaving scores and any 'wrong calls' people think the tech panel made aside, since either way they did skate as well as they were actually capable of skating) are Satoko and Mirai and maybe Choi. I don't know. I think Kaetlyn's program is more challenging and if skated to its full potential then sure, she should be higher. But even as lackluster as Gracie was, she hit all her beats and jumped all her jumps (sort of). Kaetlyn doesn't have the reputation and her performance (my opinion) couldn't live up to the demands of the choreography, I thought. Combine those two factors together and it isn't surprising that she landed where she did in this competition.
