2016 Four Continents Ladies Free Skate

Kudos to Tom Zakrasjek. He and his kids worked with the jump maestro Mishin for ten days last summer. Mira has made changes to her jump technique and stuck with them, and it shows. Jump set-ups, arm positions through take off and in air. Her urs seem to be in the rear view mirror. So happy for her. Too bad she is not going to worlds. Watch out for her next season. I am guessing this is just the beginning of her second chapter.

Thanks so much. Kevin's speech pattern has a more natural flow and it's particularly amazing given that he's a very busy athlete and probably doesn't get to practice Japanese a lot. On a somewhat unrelated note, Satoko only spoke a simple English sentence but I can tell that she has great ears and paid attention to rhythm in language in a way that most people don't. No surprise that she hit every nuance of the music.

Ok, I just watched some programs. The thing is, I'm ok with Satoko winning big competitions. I'm really ok with this. I'm not a fan, but the girl deserves it all. :)
When it comes to jumping technique, interpretation, skating skills, energy (not today), choreography (so far), for me Gracie is a better skater than Satoko. She has it all. But if she just can't give her best in competition and keeps falling and missing combos of course I'm ok with Satoko getting >140. The little lady was far better than anyone else here. I can't connect to her performance very much but it's a matter of taste. I love to see what Johnny said at nationals...fire on ice. Yuna's Danse macabre..Mao's Rach2...Liza's last season FS (maybe some won't agree here). That's what I want from ladies skating. But I can appreciate at Satoko her confidence, her calm and consistency. If the others want to beat Satoko at worlds they need to skate clean because almost surely she will.
Hats off to Satoko for so many clean skates! (please give Denis Ten some of your consistency and maybe he's gonna help with the jumps:laugh:)

A solo jump cannot be done twice. Since her 2A+3T is a combination, it does not violate the rule so it is ok.

Is it Myahara can't stay in the air long enough for 3-3? She's so low to ground after first 3, no space for a second - even for a fast rotator.

But I still say there's something odd about laughing at people because they make their predictions in a different way.

You're right. Some people might've forgotten their manners. :rolleye:
All the people who predicted Gracie's as the winner should be laughed out according to the same theory since she is No. 1 US Ladies, one of the two US skaters advanced to GPF and placed in second and first at the 2 GPs along with the cruel fact that she was the fourth at 2015 4CC. :confused2: Besides, Karen was a bronze medalist at US Nationals last season, and none predicted Polina would won the 4CC title last year. The prediction game is also just for fun and to generate more attention people here to near future competitions, not for contempt or anything. Mirai's UR didn't make people trust her jump rotations in the past, but she has been changed which is a really good thing for her. We just can be happy with Mirai's success at this competition.

Kaetlyn has deeper edges, better knee bend and power than Gracie. She actually interprets the music and her overall performance was better. One would never know that based on how the judges scored them in those categories. Shameful

I have said this several times this season and some fans are actually seeing this for the first time. When she is on, there is not a ladies skater today that can rival Kaetlyn Osmond's PCS. Having seen her live at Nationals last month, she stands out in her performance, like no other skater in competition. Shame that judges felt the need in 2 skates here, to not reward her deservedly.

It's just a figure is speech. No one is really laughing at anyone.

I think saying nobody can rival her is a bit of an overstatement. I like Kaetlyn too, but there are some other skaters out there this season who are more artistic than her when they're on (Mao Asada for sure). But I agree that she is a very good performer and her PCS today was very confusing.

She does 3-3 in the SP.

I disagree. Satoko might be quiet and introspective and might not project as much as some would prefer, but she is expressive (watch her arms) and hits the nuances of the music. If you've never seen her live, she is also quite fast and skates with more command than her small size would suggest. Gracie is mechanical, her upper body is stiff and she skates like someone who has been told what to do at every point in the program rather than someone who feels the music.

Im also glad that SoYoun kicked her off the pewter medal!
Nothing against her personally, when she's on she has amazing jumps and she's very pleasant to watch, but she didn't deserve anything higher than 6th or 7th to me today, with those performances

I can not tell you how WONDERFUL it is to see Mirai smile again, during and AFTER performances! More of those competitions, Mirai, and your numbers will just keep going up, and the USFSA won't be able to make you the bridesmaid anymore! Gracie was much better, and I hope she goes home, gets trained and ready for Boston very thoroughly. She needs to work that Firebird and explode with the music, it looked like she just didn't want to be at 4CC, maybe that is why she was so underwhelming here. Good for Katelyn Osmond too. After watching some of her programs this season, I'm happy she is finally getting back to the old Katelyn. She's not there yet, but it's a process. God her toe jumps are just HUGE. She is wonderful to watch when she is on. One judge gave her a point lower in each PCS category than the average, which is awful, and that judge should slap himself. Even then, I still think her PCS should and will go higher with cleaner skates. She does have, as they say, "Canadian Skating Skills"

Whatever we've said about Satoko's jumps, she is supremely consistent, and very pleasing to watch, and it's a credit to her that she makes the most out of what she's got. It's really enjoyable to watch someone and know they're not gonna fall or mess up, so you can just sit back and enjoy the whole performance.

After watching the skates from 4CC this morning I was happy to see that it wasn't a Splat Fest. However, as I predicted, it appeared that the Canadian and US skaters were suffering from Jet Lag. I know from experience that the second day is often worse than the first as the adrenaline and excitement of being in a new Country gives way to the new time zone and your body needs a good 12 to 16 hours of good sleep to recover. I'm so happy for Mirai and even though Gracie didn't medal she at least had a decent skate and can rest and prepare for Worlds.

Cleary, the judges are willing to give Gracie big numbers if she can stay on her feet and I just hope that's what she does at Worlds. I hope Mirai's skates and placement lights a fire under the US Ladies heading into World's because, if not for her...........The US would be MEDAL FREE among the Ladies...Congrats Mirai....

I am kind of feeling bad for Gracie after this. While I feel her scores were higher than they should have been (and Osmond deserved 5th), that's not at all her fault. I think she really wanted to establish herself as a strong contender for a medal and Worlds and she managed to do just the opposite of that. Any high she was riding on after her win at Nationals has to be squashed like a bug  I just don't really think she'll be able to get herself in the right headspace for Boston after that.
If I had to make early Worlds predictions right now, it would look like this: 1. Evgenia, 2. Satoko 3. Elena 4-5. Mao/Ashley 6-8. Gracie/Anna/Rika.

So nice of Mirai to act as a translator and not leave Rika out of the conversation. :cool2:

Imagine the top lady skaters in a room. Zhenya speaks Russian. Polina E translates Russian to English. Mirai translates English to Japanese. Satoko receives.
Depending on the translation skills of Polina E and Mirai, Zhenya says "I love strawberries." Satoko hears "I hate raspberries."

I personally think Red Violin is too sophisticated for most judges to appreciate to be honest... come on.. they much prefer something like Titanic and diCarpio drowning, or Phantoms, Les mis etc... alternatively, try Carmen, Firebirds, Swanlakes.

Dicaprio did not drown. He died of hypothermia from the cold Atlantic waters then Kate Winslet push him into the sea.
