Your opinion on Skate Canada

chuckm has also just demonstrated his lack of knowledge of the state of Canada-Russia diplomatic relations in the past few years.....it makes me weep, and I really wish the situation were different, but it boggles me to hear an accusation that Canada is going to be favoured for some political reason at present.

Something has changed, though----Canada now has a judge in every discipline at Worlds 2017. Now, how did THAT happen??

My impressions from attending my first live event since GPF 2001 (awesome event, yagudin vs plushenko anyone?):

The audience was receptive to everyone, and naturally cheered more for the Canadians... although I think Yuzuru got louder cheers than Chan, although not nearly as much as the Sochi crowd cheered for their compatriots.

The food was typical arena fare... I just brought in my own in my pockets... and contrary to what people said before, they were not strict on cameras at all. Anyway, ladies washroom lines were long but they smartened up and made a few men's washrooms into ladies ' ones. I just got smart and did not go during intermissions.

It was great to see the skaters in person and see how they actually covered the ice without the television skewing the impression.

My favourites:

Yuzu... just to see him live, even flawed, was the reason I got tickets
Misha Ge... that free was the best performed program of the week, or pretty close to it

Kaetlyn... much faster and more likable than I had previously thought her... actually enjoyed both programs
Satoko... skating to that little clip from Star Wars won me over...

Piper and Paul... their sd and his 'stache had us in stitches

Pairs... meh. Good for D/R to get their 3A, but her landings are just so poor in her throws... if a singles skater landed like that they would get little credit
Lovely Chinese newpair...
Lovely free also by denney and frazier... nice to see Zoueva with a pair team, where she started...

To me the marks were questionable, with seemingly great skates getting skewered by the judges, but they were doing a lot of reviewing from my vantage point behind the t3ch panel. Most of the placements were correct, though.

My oppinion on Skate Canada

I took SD from Skate Canada and looked at GOEs. I used the integer values, without any transformation.

1. I suppose there is some "true" GOE for which element. So, for each element of each pair, I took an average of 9 GOEs given by judges, and then calculated how much each individual GOE deviated from this average.
For example, suppose a pair recieved 1 1 1 2 2 2 1 1 1 for an element. Average GOE here is 4/3.
The judges who gave 1 GOE will deviate -1/3 from average, and judges who gave 2 GOE will deviate +2/3 from average on this element.

2. There may be some judges that are overly positive, and other that are very critical to all skaters. I'm not interested in those, as thats a matter of their own personal preference. To remove this effect, I calculated the average deviation for each judge, and subtracted it from all deviation values.

3. Finally, there may be some judges that are more random / chaotic than others. To remove this effect, i calculated the standard deviation for each judge and normalized the GOE deviations.

Then, i just added it up by skater.

Also replicated it for PCs,

And got this: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1u1JXZpL1XHtSnZJIzhfOHW-X4HX4O3QndljgUKg7GlM/edit?usp=sharing

My thoughts:
CAN judge: likes all 3 canadian couples (gave them all GOE above average), and dislikes american couples. Also dislikes Chinese and Finnish.
JPN judge: looks like a cool guy imho, no clear patterns here
KOR judge: really hates the Dannish couple and the Italians, and loves Canadians
NED judge: seems to dislike the american couples
CHN judge: guess what, he LOVES the chinese couple. Also seems to dislike russians.
ITA judge: Loves italian couple, surprise, and doesnt likes Virtue / Moir
RUS judge: Loves the russian couple, as expected, and dislikes Virtue / Moir
USA judge: loves the american couples, specially Hawayek / Baker. Mildly dislikes canadians.
FIN judge: Loves the finnish couple, and also likes the danish one, and dislikes everybody else.

Cross Validating with PCs. Similar analysis and...
CAN judge: looks biased both on PCs and GOE. Supports canadians and lowballs americans
JPN, KOR, NED: whatever, ill check the FD before judging them
CHN: supports chinese and lowballs russians
ITA: supports italians
RUS: supports russians
USA: supports Hawayek/Baker and lowballs canadians
FIN; supports finnish

Conclusion: judges clearly seem to give higher scores for their own skaters.

I think it's time someone gave Satoko some heavy criticism up in here and the thoughts on Skate Canada thread gets real!! Who does she think she is to present this lovely Star Wars themed program and have the courage to leave out the Cantina Band song.

Look girl..I know you got caught up in a little snafu with the StSeq so let's just take a moment and right this ship.. No judge will have the courage to criticize how much ice you cover or any of that jazz if you change the music in the StSeq and lay down some serious foot stomping to this!!

I'll even sweeten the deal as a sign of solidarity and buy a ticket for her next GP event and out scream any screamer we've run across on the Grand Prix so far. I just need to know where Sabinfire is sitting so I can sit and scream right by him. I'll be keeping a tight watch on her fan thread for the good word

What I found most interesting was that the RUSSIAN judge gave V/M the highest PCS scores in the FS: the only 10s (in CO and IN) and 9.75 in everything else, thus allowing the Canadian judge's high scores to stand.

Does this portend a deal between Canada and Russia for Russia to back V/M for the World Championship vs. the French in return for a World medal for Bob/Sol?

I gave you a thumb up because here you exceeded even your usual self. No sarcasm - I do love to read your conspiracy theories:agree:

chukm conspiracy theorie make sense Russia/USA relations are at their lowest point since the cold war, if Russia can screw the US in ice dance and help Canada and france for a world medal they would do it.

At their lowest point since the cold war? I thought the Republicans nominated a Trump/Putin ticket in 2016....:slink:

My impressions from attending my first live event since GPF 2001 (awesome event, yagudin vs plushenko anyone?):

Except for the FD, when there were BOOs when Chock/Bates scored higher than Virtue/Moir. That was ugly.

....although I think Yuzuru got louder cheers than Chan, although not nearly as much as the Sochi crowd cheered for their compatriots.

There was a large contingent of Japanese fans in the audience, much like there was in Chicago at Skate America.

Expanding the analysis to FD, i see the following judges stuff for the top 4 couples (C/B, V/M, G/P and C/L):

Canada: both on SD and FD, and both in PCs and GOE gave lower scores to C/B. In SD, they got rather desperate and lowballed C/B quite a lot. Also, always gave higher scores to their own couples everywhere. Neutral for italian.

JPN: consistently gave higher scores for C/B

ITA: gave higher scores to C/L. Also, in FD, gave really low scores to G/P, hoping that maybe C/L could be 3rd?

USA: high scores for C/B, low scores for V/M and C/L

FIN: this judge hates everything non finnish imho.

KOR, NED, CHN, RUS: ??? no clear patterns for those guys for the top 4. Though CHN and RUS kept giving higher scores to their own couples.
For example, RUS gave bad scores for V/M in SD, but good scores in FD, so maybe just a matter of taste or something.

Final thought: next time, i wont bother with SD/SP. As there are no clear positions yet, judges are more cautious. in FD, it was way more clear and also its easier to correlate stuff (such as italian judge being neutral to G/P in SD, and then giving some very above average scores in FD).

Except for the FD, when there were BOOs when Chock/Bates scored higher than Virtue/Moir. That was ugly.

There have been a few interpretations to explain the reason for the boos. So far only one has been confirmed by a witness...Americans in the audience booing because C/B didn't win the gold.

And who says that one person is telling the truth? What I heard was boos from MORE than just the two people the so-called witness said were booing.

I follow ice dance rather closely and I was not expecting C/B to win the FD, let alone the competition. I figured it to be close for 2nd between G/P and C/B.

The booers where more likely to be either G/P fans who wanted them in 2nd place, or V/M fans who thought they should have won the FD, too.

Thank you rvi5 ! We are talking Canadians, and Canadian skating fans even. It doesn't get much more polite and respectable than that. There is not a chance in hell, fans would be intentionally booing a team here, esp. one that is so respected as C&B. The boos that chuckie is referring to, were as you noted, from those in the stands who did not like the end results for C&B. Chuckie continues to take truths and attempts to bend them for his own reality.

A true revisionist historian here.

Sheesh I know right... what was she thinking?

If she had only mouthed 'May the Force be with you' in the beginning while making swooosh sound effects as she skate with all the Jedi light sabre mimfighting, do that 2 hands flicked apart as if something exploded with the sound of a destroyed deathstar sfx towards the end while mouthed: Noooooo... you are not my father!!!!! feigned arm got chopped off complete with agony cry. she may have gathered extra 10 PCS in scoring she need. It seems the type of stuff that win PCS these days.
