2017 Four Continents Men SP

I personally value Europeans and 4CC higher than GPF....simply because of the qualification process....

Euros and 4CC are more inclusive, but not as much as Worlds. GPF is elitist. The best among the qualified elites get to compete there. Creme de la creme, like Worlds last flight.

yeah but as I said, it's not necessarily including the worlds last flight... as they get into that position based on competing at VARIED levels of GP.... some GP outings are harder than others... for whatever conditions.... so there are always skaters who manage to not qualify or other who sneak in but wouldn't likely be in the final flight at worlds... Also, 50% of the skaters at GPF end up with a medal... not the case at Worlds, or other ISU championships.

I think that ISU is addressing very simply in how they award points for each events... winning Worlds or Olympics =1200 points, 4CC or Euros 840, GPF 800.

GP 400 Challengers 300

One could argue that the best may not qualify. For example, Mao Asada in 2009. Or Cappellini/Lanotte in 2016.

One thing for sure about this event: we'll see a crazy number of quads. Even apart from the top 5 or 6 men. I hope to see many guys get PBs.

i think that GPF is important but I can understand why some people don't see it as a major competition. Yes, it does feature the top 6 qualifying skaters of the GP but some years, you may find the 6 best skaters of the world and some other years, like for instance this year, you are missing the previous year 's 3rd and 4th place finisher at WC. The fact that there is a draw for GPs throughout the season, making it extremely difficult for some teams to even qualify while others have an easier road adds to that feeling.

As I said, I do not think it's a useless and unworthy achievement...but I can see why some people wouldn't care much about its significance.... Worlds championships feature a large number of skaters.... GPF is one flight.

I see~ yeah I was wondering when I saw Violet Bliss post but of course not referring just hers specifically, but the fact that many posters before this as well tend to write that way in doing reference like "Skater A has won world medal and 4CC/European... etc" but rarely one would reference the GPF medals, even some commentators did it. Because my impression is that GPF is 2nd important event after World, considering if we takes out all GP Series event, the figure skating season would be almost nothing since competition only start in December. But thanks for answering! I don't want to prolong the discussion in this already progressive thread:laugh:

EDIT: PAGE 17(!!!) AND THE COMPETITION DIDN'T EVEN START YET???!!!! :eeking:

For last few years GPF was definitely bigger event than 4cc and euro. This year for the men it will be 4cc propably although the main skaters will be basically the same here and and gpf so about gpf=4cc this year

The continuous belittling of Hanyu generally even his achievements at GPFs and Olympics :disapp:

The truth and the matter for me, is that while I see many people hyping up Boyang's improvement in the PCS department, I do NOT see it... I see an energetic and engaging performer, which he was already. I do not see the quality you are describing... Sorry... call me blind if you wish but do not think I am blinded.

Sorry, but then yes, I think you are 'blind'. It's not as if more choreographic content was hard to see, really :roll9:

...and that there are other skaters with big jumps right now who feel more complete.

There are. They still rightfully get higher PCS. But that has nothing to do with Boyang improving for his own standards.

Your thinking couldn't possibly be influenced by the fact that Chan won 4CC 2017 but finished off the podium at GPF 2017?

If Paddy had WON GPF 2017 too, I suspect your opinion would be just a bit different, no?

17 pages! Are we probably going to see 25 pages before the men's SP starts?

Or can a new thread to be created soon for practice reports replace this over-heated board for a while?

This is crazy and this trend didn't even happen as this much at Worlds last year.

The unpredictability of the men's event here would make the competition way more exciting.

Er... None of those competitions have happened yet.

I was thinking the same thing. I realize people have their favorites but, there is never a need to bash another skater for any reason. Lift and promote your favorite, even it if makes other people a bit crazy....You know, like I do. ;) Go Patrick!! http://media.gettyimages.com/photos...-on-day-four-of-picture-id629147416?s=594x594  He looks so calm and there is a slab of rock hard, slippery, painful ice under him should he make a mistake. Those abs.....Spectacular.

I really hope Patrick skates well here. He was not great at the GPF and finishing off the podium must have been quite shocking. I guess it might be good for his confidence to come out and win a medal but, I hope he takes a week off to be fresh for Worlds.

Wonder why China only sent two men here. They definitely have more than two men qualified for 4CC. I am worried about Han Yan, who had terrible programs and costumes this year. Hope he shows differently, at least back to his last year's level at 4cc.

And the truth and the matter for me is that I don't see that Patrick Chan should still be getting 90s in PCS for lifeless, splatfest performances like his FS at Worlds, but it happens. And Chan's ludicrous PCS even when he makes mistakes already robbed Boyang once this season!

China has no more skaters who have the TES minimums. They did sent someone to the Winter Universiade but it's too late for 4CCs.

I think they need to have Javi show up as as a surprise guest sweeper... you know so all the top guys can be there.
