Patrick Chan

I'm going to see Patrick live for the first time in two weeks. Any tips on what I should focus on, as a noob? Quads? Blade control? Upper body movement? Or should I simply enjoy it and take it all in? Tell me, FanFest!

Just take in the zen that is Patrick's skating overall. The blade/edgework that melts into the ice and hardly makes a sound. His quiet power and control over the ice and how he becomes his music. Just enjoy. ;)

Totally agree! Yes, there was criticism of Patrick's skating that some people couldn't feel the emotion from him when he skated, but it was just from "some people", who may not like him even today. I personally don't think he was less emotional than his contemporaries. I was moved to tears from many of his early performances. The following one, for example was 5 years ago:

I wish I could find the CBC version with Tracy's comments, but can't find it. If anyone knows, please post it here. Thanks a lot!

Is this it?

If it is, thanks to happylife. She told me how to locate it. :) :agree:

Thank you happylife, thank you blueberryhill! Thank you both sooo much!
Aren't you people moved by the performance of Patrick?

Some comments from Tracy and Kurt:
"Every second no move without a purpose." "The moment he created... pure, beautiful skating..." "Fans were moved emotionally by his performance."

well i agree with a lot of things you say but personally, as a tango lover, i felt so much passion when patrick skated to esqualo... SO MUCH PASSION... and the fact that he has this incredibly nice posture just makes tango on ice very special... to me it was a very emotional program.... but i can see how pieces with lyrics can bring people in more...

btw... i never thought patrick was too "interior" as a performer... even at 17-18.. i thought he was musically gifted.. but just young... now, he is more open... he is only 26... in music, that's a relatively young age when you think that some performers really get a new maturity in their 40 and 50s :) and let's not talk about the beasts who are still performing way past 60 and bring a completely different musical personality to the stage... so to me, Patrick was just a young performer then... now he has opened up..
I agree with all of this too!!! Patrick emoted differently skating to Esqualo because Esqualo is different than anything else he has skated to. I changed my mind after reading your post! :) I decided that, rather than less emotion, it's simply a different expression of emotion in Esqualo than in his recent competition programs. In Esqualo, his passion is expressed in very sharp, quick movements and positions. The passion in his competition programs lately is expressed through lyrical, elongated movements. Patrick can present both styles well, according to what the music calls for. I like your thought that Patrick was always musically gifted, but young. With maturity has come more openness. Working with different coaches and choreographers over the years has helped as well, because they have brought out and emphasized different aspects of his skating.

:agree: that those people may still say the same thing today. I was very moved by his early performances, especially Four Seasons 1, Tango de los Exilados, and Aranjuez, off the top of my head. And when he did Phantom clean at 2011 Nationals, boy oh boy that was exhilarating to watch. Take Five was a lot of fun, and I  the step sequence with its amazing one-foot section!!! Elegie was so heavenly. I've been emotionally moved by Patrick's skating for going on 10 years now.

Thanks a lot 4everchan, but not this one. This is the National. I'm looking for CBC's Rostelecom one.

oh.. i looked up for Nationals as it is usually when Tracy gets into play ;) now i see it's been found... so YAY (still have to watch it :) )

Wishing Patrick good luck and great success as he moves onto the new season and different challenges!!!!!:love::love:

GO PATRICK GO!!!:luv17:

i saw patrick only once live... at nationals (well 3 programs... ) but yeah... i think what is mesmerizing with him compared to everyone else i have seen so far : his movement on the ice... he is fast, smooth and goes in all directions always... he is always meandering on the ice, turning, floating, skating so easily... and then BANG huge jumps, textbook air position and classic landing....

if you get only a bit of that, mission accomplished... if Patrick is IN THE ZONE (that happened once in 3 programs at Nationals for Journey) then you will also feel the utmost musical connection by a skater... the difference with Patrick : he emotes from the blade up through the entire body.... so it's a complete symbiosis between music and skating.

also, Patrick knows to look good on the ice from every angle. He takes the utmost care of every single detail. We will live Nebelhorn through you and Kuan... may you both bring us glorious reports!!!!

PS :

at nebelhorn, of course there are a lot of tier 2 or 3 skaters... so Patrick will be in a league of his own... but do not let it fool you.... even with the best skaters in the world competing next to him, he is in a league of his own... he is unique and that is why, his fans are so loyal and dedicated.

I'm up in the air right now if I'm going to make it out to Canadian Championships since I have to be at US Nationals and the events overlap a tiny bit. ;)

We will see. :con2:

You'll have fun either way... though not quite as much fun if you don't get to see Patrick, of course. ;)

Awesome! Please take in the whole Patrick Chan experience and let us know what it's like!

Totally agree that Patrick is one of a kind. The European skating fans are in for a treat!

I am so, so, so looking forward to seeing his first competition performances!

I envy you so much! That would be my dream to see Patrick skate on "big" ice. That's where he belongs and that's where he shines. :luv17:

mrrice once posted that he and his friends would close their eyes at competition practices and listen for the skating noises and they would always know when Patrick skated by because the sound of his blades were so distinctive. For my first competition experience (2014 Nats) I purposely chose front row seats because I wanted to hear his blades. That didn't work out too well for me as the rink was just too noisy.

At the 2017 Nats my seat were higher up and I believe with Patrick that's the ideal vantage point to experience his brilliance. Patrick's ice coverage is UNMATCHED and from that you can understand and fully appreciate his power and speed. When you watch fs on tv the camera is close and skater's ice coverage is lost. I have become very discerning and I notice when skaters do not use the full ice surface. In fact next time you watch skating on tv observe that many of the skaters just stay in the middle, not going into the corners and staying a distance away from the boards on the side opposite of the judges. (Of course they will get up and personal in front of the judges. ;)) Yes, chiddy's encounters with the boards are legendary  but that's due his speed and power which is translated into ice coverage or as announcers call it - "filling up the rink". He just flies!

Thank you all for your tips. I've seen figure skating live before, so I'm not completely new to this, but I'm really excited to see what the fuss is all about concerning Patrick. I hope I won't become too obsessed though, because I guess? it's his last season, and the last chance to see him compete. :sad21:

Patrick's programs this year are magnificent and really shows off how unique he is and his style. I have a feeling it's going to be a special season. Fingers crossed.

confession: i had been to another competition before I got to see Patrick compete... that competition had a very good spread of skaters in almost all disciplines....
already, at that first competition, i was in awe with many skaters as, since it was my first time, i was experiencing the sport to a whole new level... I wasn't expecting Patrick to be "that much better"... but then, when i got to see patrick's journey at Nationals... my admiration reached a new level...I already LOVED Patrick's skating for the quality he presents... but then i understood his athleticism, power and speed as well, that nobody else I have seen so far has.

So, yeah... my fanboying reached a new level, which I didn't think was possible LOL and I would do a lot to be able to see him skate this year... but it's just not possible for me... UGH... his new programs really look like the perfect vehicles for everything he does so well...

the good thing : after seeing him live, i am better at noticing how he skates on camera. So, at least, I can imagine his speed and coverage etc. his beautiful perfect positions.

anyways, I better stop for a bit ;) but yeah ;)

Go Patrick!!!!!

If someone were able to isolate the sound of his blades on the ice from the rest of the sounds we usually hear - I could listen to that for a while and it would be the most relaxing sound ever... Except when he falls on the ice, perhaps. Then I would wake up from my trance-like state...

I believe you on the ice coverage and I can't wait to see it for myself!
