Patrick Chan

I'll even up the poll numbers with 0.5 yes for the top and 0.5 no for the pants. i.e. old pants new tops.

The boots are supposedly newly broken in.
And I decided to vote for what I want to happen, so YES TO NEW COSTUMES from me.

new boots mean no salchow??? https://bevsmithwrites.wordpress.com/2017/10/20/patrick-chan-deletes-a-quad-for-now/

No fun means no 4S or no skating. Patrick is sticking to his priority of enjoying his skating and superb performances of his programs. He needs to feel comfortable and confident. 4S will be back later. I'm glad he's ignoring the pressures and is doing things his own way and by his feelings. One day at a time and one competition at a time, that's focusing on the present.

i am fine with that...

i just think that he may run out of competitions if he wants to add to his layout.... patrick is not the kind of skater who does those yolo jumps when something goes wrong... even he will lose combos and so on because he sticks to his plans... so ... i am a bit disappointed that he feels he is at that level right now... simply because we are already at the first GP event...

though... in 2016, he started with 1 quad and 1 3a and won ;) so let's cheer for him!

Only Patrick knows how he feels and how he wants to feel. He will adjust as he goes. Some of what he went through upon return to competition were horrendous and tumultuous. It seems he is more into zen and going with the flow mindset instead of forcing things to happen, and if that means a relaxed Patrick, the outcome may please his fans too.

In 2016, he didn't just win with 1 quad and 1 3A, he gave us a beautiful performance.

Yes, let's cheer for him and enjoy the journey with him.

i already cheered ;)

i will always respect what an athlete decides to do. It's Patrick who needs to perform, and i am 100% behind him.

I just love his quads  so i always want to see more ;)

Unlike some of the other top Men, Patrick has chosen to present two brand new programs this Olympic season. It's understandable that he needs more time and experience to get them in full glory with both high performance and high technical difficulty. As well, he doesn't do hit or miss with ultra high BV including jumps ready or not. Instead he is used to upgrading his programs steadily through the season and hopefully he will peak at the biggest event near the end of the season. For the debut of these programs, he has decided to be at ease with them so he can show us their beauty and potential. From the glimpses we had, they do look potentially wonderful and I look forward to seeing them beautifully performed.

Go Patrick!

What an incredibly self-aware athlete Patrick has become, and how wonderfully written by Bev Smith (yet again). Unlike DiManno, Smith writes in a respectful and hopeful way about Patrick's decisions. I am sorry that those big elements have been giving Patrick fear lately, but I'm glad he's decided what to do about it instead of letting that fear take over every time he needs to skate. We'll see when the 4S comes back. Now with him having even more of a disadvantage in TES, we have to really not care about results. Patrick taught me how to do that, actually, when he came back. Still, I hope he gets good placements at the GPs and can make it to the GPF (I NEED to see these programs as many times as possible, and he took Nebelhorn away from me! :p:dev2:).

Some telling excerpts:

“I’ll admit it,” he said. “I’m not a technical genius when it comes to jumps. I’ve done what I needed to do to get to the top during my prime days. I accomplished that. For me to try to compete with the others, adding a quad flip, a quad Lutz, I don’t enjoy that. At the end of the day, I’m skating because I’ve continued to push myself into the 2018 Games, my third Games, because I want to enjoy it."

“My strategy is to focus on the quality of the program,” Chan said. “It’s more what I want to do and what I love to do about skating: the actual performance.” His two new programs – “Dust in the Wind” and “Hallelujah,” are meaningful to him, easily the most meaningful, soulful programs he’s ever done, he said. It’s a meaningful season to him, too, because it will be his swan song.

The thing is, Chan’s motivation this year is to enjoy the process and the Games. He feels this new strategy will make him feel that he can accomplish the most out of every performance this year. “I want to perform with a feeling of complete control of my situation,” he said. He’s thinking about his own personal enjoyment, performing what is still a very difficult routine.

“I fell on the toe,” Chan said. “I kept myself in the right mindset to do the quad Sal and I went up and I rotated it and I fell again. Then I went up into the triple Axel and fell on the triple Axel. At that point, I kind of threw my hands up in the air. At that point, I didn’t even want to complete the footwork sequence, which I love personally. It’s my favourite part of the program. But because of the mistakes on the jumps, I had no desire to keep going.” [When Patrick Chan says he doesn't feel like doing a step sequence, that's like Nathan Chen saying he doesn't feel like doing quads! I'm impressed by Patrick's openness in revealing this. Looking back, I think this did happen to him in the Sochi LP.]

He still has his tour de force of a jump sequence: the triple Axel – half loop – triple Salchow, which he says offers a better balance of risk and reward. It gives him headaches, sometimes. But it can work and it’s "empowering," he said. It leads into his choreographic step sequence. It just works very well. He likes it. It will become valuable to him. [I'm THRILLED that he sounds so confident and happy about the 3A+1Lo+3S!!!!! The one at Onyx was SO BEAUTIFUL!!! More of those, please. ;)]

Chan intends to put that quad Salchow back in later, depending on how his body feels. But for the time being, he needs to build his confidence to be able to perform consistently. The strategy is sound. And personal. [ this ending SO MUCH!!!]

yup :) i agree with you... he took nebelhorn away from us ;) and then the salchow ;) but it's okay... we love him and hope for him to skate well ... there is nothing like a big smile on patrick's face after a competition.. that's what i want to see all year... joy... no regrets!

Love you Patrick ;)

PS love you Patrick's fans too ;)

........because Patrick says, "Don't take my joy of skating away from me."

He is really skating by his own principle, without giving in to COP and trend and pressures. :agree: His performance and success can't be measured with scores and medals any more at this point when the scoring system is out of step with the new reality of Men skating. RESPECT, from me, from all his fans, and from more and more general skating fans, is what he has earned and his rightful reward now. Personally, Mens medals these days means little to me as a matter of which gambler wins on the day, and they seem to mean less for him too.

Patrick's success in skating is largely a matter of building on a strong solid foundation, which enables him to add quads after mastering skating skills. And it enables him to learn new quads at the age at which most are retiring and while many younger very talented skaters have a hard time even getting a reliable quad, even incuring injuries in their effort. In the same vein, I believe he wants to lay a good foundation for his new programs that are very special to him by mastering the choreography before adding newer quads. It's his system and his new mindset of performance and presenting the program first and foremost. Doing things his own way is a new freedom he's accorded himself, coming from a place of confidence and relaxation that he's gained from knowing himself and from understanding "dust in the wind".

we love him and hope for him to skate well ... there is nothing like a big smile on patrick's face after a competition.. that's what i want to see all year... joy... no regrets!

Love you Patrick ;)

GO PATRICK!!!!

PS love you Patrick's fans too ;)

Like bickering couples.
