2018 US Championships Sr. Ladies FS

This could be a factor.

Unfortunately, it's not just about what you do on the ice.

Karen's personality off the ice (and Bradie and Mirai at that) are relatively bland compared to someone fiery and real talk like Ashley. No shade to Karen, but I don't really picture sponsors and interviewers being particularly interested in Chen compared to Wagner.

That's the commercial aspect for Ashley to reap if she wins an Olympic medal. But Karen has more in common with the current top scorers and the US fed may consider that to keep up with the trend and the chances.

My mom could not believe it was her singing. She said are you sure it isn't Whitney Houston!!

Starr didn't sing the whole program. Only the beginning and that was Houston at the end with the big power chords and vocal runs, not Starr.

I think she is just expressing her feelings. She is not afraid to speak her mind. The judges obviously did want to "deflate" her PCS. (whether that deflation is fair or not is open to discussion but Bradie Tennell with higher PCS is laughable/ Mirai Nagasu is also hardly a PCS Queen (although I love her) and her PCS marks were very close to Ashley's). She is just telling it how she sees it. Also, it is probably a bit of reminder of 2010 Nationals when the judges gave her lower PCS than Rachel Flatt (haha) and she did not make the team. I don't like skaters who put on a smiley face and say nothing of substance. Be truthful without being disrespectful. She was not disrespectful to the other skaters.

Agreed. She did not say “my scores were lower in relation to skaters ABC”, she reiterated that her scores were lower in relation to what she put out on the ice.

Okay a lot of you are saying the the US Fed is showing they are done with Ashley due to lower marks then she would get internationally. But why is the US Fed done with her? This is what I don't understand. i really think at an international event the results would be different.

I find the name discussion fascinating. I have been wondering whether a Russian individual chooses the way their name is romanized. For example Anastasiia Gubanova uses two "ii" while Gulyakova and Tarakanova use one(Anastasia). Is there something about the way their names are spelled in the Cyrillic script that indicates the correct romanization or did they choose between the acceptable versions?

It is morning now in Moscow. Maybe someone is awake.

There are two Anastasia Gubanova’s....one skates in pairs. I think they changed it to Anastasiia to differentiate easier. Could be wrong though.

God help the poor USFSA souls who will have to be politicking and slaving like mad over the next month to get Tennell's marks up higher internationally. :slink:

I'm not convinced they'll have to work that hard. She's already over 200 internationally at SkAm.

I've said it before: With the trials of recent years, the bloom is fading on the US Ladies Title as the gold standard internationally... but that title is still a rose. It still means something to be the US Ladies Champion.

I certainly don't think level heads believe she's a podium threat in Korea (although stranger things have happened), but she'll score credibly and have a respectable placement.

Karen was definitely held up by the judges - in both segments. They should send both her and Ashley to 4CC and whoever places better there should be sent to the Olympics.

Because they probably feel hurt that she hasn’t accepted 4CC assignments in the past, and that she should have skated hurt through Skate America, even though she made it clear that her goals were Nationals and Olympics. They would have preferred a pre-Comp withdrawal.

Congratulations to Bradie Tennell on her first US title. :clapper: :cheer2:

Once again she has shown tonight what she's made of - A HEART OF A CHAMP WITH SOME NERVE OF STEEL!

We ALL know they can do these technical ELEMENTS but it all comes down to who can DELIVER UNDER PRESSURE. Our preferences don't really matter once they're on the ICE. It's all up to them. FEW can do it and becomes the champ. Others buckle/crack under pressure and nerves get the best of their performance.

Tonight, Bradie is the ONLY one who didn't show any kind of nerve at all. She was not rattled, flustered and unfazed with the enormous pressure of the moment. You can have the biggest tricks in your arsenal and all the greatest skating qualities; but you still need to bring it when it matters. To me, that's what makes the difference.

She did that tonight and deservedly WON the title.

I can see her placing between 6-8. Oh look, where Ashley places on a bad day.

Sorry, haha, had to go there. Not against you at all.

Karen has lovely spins and skating skills. Her jumps can be great but she has endless technical issues.

I think the question is who deserves it. Like it doesn't matter if Ashley or Karen goes since they'll get hammered technically ... but Karen did enough (and the judges held back Ashley enough) to stay just ahead of Ashley.

The Skate Canada result could play a huge factor.

Of course if the USFS doesn't care how the 3rd entry does and puts their eggs in Bradie's basket then sending Karen is fine - but If they want scoring potential then Ashley is more sensible IMO.

I mean Karen erred on half her jumping passes!

Mirai finally showed raw emotion, wow, I guess she had some fire buried deep in there somewhere, haha, esp in her step sequence. I think her PCs should be higher than karen's, but Karen really threw it down tonight except for that botched sal....Karen finally woke up.

I think the placements are right, Bradie, Karen, Mirai....all threee to the olympics....and I think these three will get picked by USFSA.

Sad for Ashley, but girl is 26? you can't fight age. I also think her music change to LALA land was a weak choice, the lyrics are good, but the music arrangement sucks. I would have loved to see her skate to Mirai's Miss Saigon music, change it up a little, skate to the role of Ellen.

Ellen was not a nice person though. She was scared for her husband Chris, to go see Kim. Then again, that might fit Ashley.

...but we're not going to pick someone for the team based on personality (or lack thereof), are we?

Why do some people not take skating seriously as a sport again? :dance2:
