2018 Olympic Figure Skating Mens SP

Is it just possible that Nathan peaked too early in the season? A shame he couldnt peak here at the Olympics but I am just throwing some reasons out there. His last two poor performances are quite alarming and worrying.

It all happened after th very unfortunate costume change. Vera Wang needs to be fired

Am I the only one who thinks that Aliev was heavily underscored in PCS? Even Ge's PCS are higher.

I was expecting a 100 to be honest, he was fantastic.

AMAZING COMPETITION. I got my friends to watch and they were all so impressed and one who was totally not into figure skating before even said that she never knew how exciting it could be. Lots of oohs and aahs and shading of some costumes and music choices, but this is the kind of event that gets people into FS!!:hap10:

Junhwan - I'm so emotional. I didn't even think he could make it to the Olympics, but here he is giving the performance of his life in front of the home crowd, showing those nerves of steel he has.:sad4: He still has issues to work out, but he did more than enough. I am so excited for next season for him!!!

Julian - Slightly devastated he didn't make the cut...He was absolutely lovely and inspiring. Love him and I hope he enjoyed his moment.

Han Yan - Such a pity about the stumbles, but his skating quality is undeniable and THAT 3A!!

Keegan - He is so dedicated to his performance and it was sooo good.

Adam - WHOLE GROUP IS IN LOVE WITH HIM. He has the sass and charisma we all love.

Patrick - Beautiful step sequence. Who needs a 3A?

Dmitri - I felt so smug when he nailed that and is now in the FINAL GROUP! The top Russian man. God it was great.

Nathan - I just...feel awful for him....I was estatic after Yuzuru, but my sadness for Nathan kind of lingered for the rest of the time...I'm not the biggest fan, but his situation is pretty heartbreaking. Hope he pulls back for the free.

Mikhail - Another one I felt pretty bad for. He wasn't dropped as hard as Nathan, but yikes.

Boyang - The best 4Lz in the world. He was on fire.

Shoma - I don't think he was as on as the others, but he gives it his all as usual.

Javi - Amaaazing. My friends loved his program.:p

Yuzu - I surprisingly didn't cry, but it was just so so so beautiful and he did that after months off the ice and only starting to jump 2 weeks ago. That is amazing and he is the GOAT. Was very surprised he did not break his own world record because wow. Olympics inflation where?

I am not the biggest Boyang fan..until last night. He was great. I saw new maturity that I really enjoyed. I actually would have had him 3rd over Shoma and I'm a Shoma girl.

*fingers crossed so hard I'm cutting off circulation* Please, Please let Javi skate well in the long. Please! My dream podium was Yuzuru-Javi-Shoma.

Also.. please let Patrick have a clean long.

And Misha Ge's components should always be through the roof.

What do you mean? Yuzu got almost a WR with 2 easier quads, Javi was near his PB with 2 easier quads as well. This meant +2 and +3 GOEs throughout. What expectations are we talking about?

I think they probably all expected to beat their personal best when they skated clean. It has nothing to do with the performance itself, but the Olympics are known for huge scores and breaking records, thus Olympic Inflation. That means you get scores you wouldn't get if you skated the same program at, let's say Cup of China. It could be that the judges are going to give these scores in the free.

PCS discussions are useless especially here. Local "experts" yet another time expressed outrage about Kolyada's pcs. Yet no one raised the question about Nathan Chen's getting the same pcs for his disaster of performance as Aliev who was brilliant. Well, I could engage into a discussion how strong jump mess affects the flow, choreo, interpretation, etc. if we were talking about Hanyu, Chan, Fernandes. But Chen is not them even when he skates clean by far and large.

I have no doubts that it is going to be another round of "pcs nonsense talk" in ladies coming from "usual suspects". But as it is known beforehand for me it's just noise.

I don't know if we should reduce them to some ancient people waiting for miracles rather than experienced professionals who know the scoring system. Yuzu got 40 +3s and 23 +2s. What else could he expect, 63 +3s straight?

I think NBC got desperate. They tried to force the Nathan Chen thing to happen and his jumps have been so hit and miss. When he's on he is on. I think the US media needed to do a better job of saying he is inconsistent but when on he will do well and that he is very new to the game. They also should have said what I think we all know: If Hanyu is clean he will win. If Fernandez is clean he will beat Nathan. Nathan is good. He is not on par with Javi or Yuzuru and it's wrong to tell an audience of casuals otherwise.

This. I know that USA wanted a gold in figure skating and Nathan was the only one who maybe could have gotten it if the other big four made some mistakes but as the moment of truth was approaching I saw like a thousand articles from U.S. media about how it is basically certain that Nathan is getting the gold cause he is the Quad King and Yuzu was injured, and Nathan has more difficult quads and higher base value etc. while they refuse to mention even once that Nathan is a bit unstable with his jumps, and artistically he's not there yet, but he is obviously improving (love his SP this season)! I grew so sick of this, I mean regardless of the fact that I am a Yuzu fan, I liked Nathan and hoped that he will develop nicely over the years but now I like him a bit less because of the stupid media hype and I hate myself for it :slink:

oh..sorry. I thought you thought she was talking about Shoma.

I hope Shoma doesn't wear the yellow from 4CC. :drama:

At 4CC it looked terrible, but yellow is the complementary colour of purple (from the colour wheel) so the yellow Turandot prince costume may look quite nice in this rink.

To me the whole Nathan thing was good for getting people in the US (casual fans) to watch but bad for Nathan. And bad for people who are now disappointed and saying stupid things like "Nathan let them down". That's crud. Nathan owes you nothing. But the media tried to turn him into Hanyu. That was grossly unfair to Nathan.

They should have said something like: "Nathan has an excellent chance to medal here if he skates cleanly. If Hanyu brings his A or even B game he is going to be hard to beat."

In some ways I think it's NBC's job to explain that to casual viewers. No one was going to beat a clean Hanyu. Fernandez and Chan of old are the only two who really have a chance at all to be close.

No reason to get so worked up. :reye:I don't know what Yuzuru is thinking, I don't know what Javier is thinking and I don't know what Shoma is thinking. I've been watching their reactions in the KnC for years now, and all three of them look different when they get a huge score or a score that's higher than expected. These are my assumptions. Well, whatever.

Probably, not the only one. You are welcome to your opinion. But, I don't think he was underscored. His SS are not the best and I am not impressed with the transitions. (the judges weren't either that was his lowest mark --deservedly) He has a lovely innate musicality but the program itself is not challenging or particularly interesting. I think he is a skater with great potential to grow but I think his PCS marks were absolutely fair here.

Totally agree. I have thought about a lot, especially in Ashley's case. I am more than sure, that Arutunian is not- and never ever has been- the one who is able to help/build up his skaters mentally/psychologically. As far as his abilities to teach a profound techinique- all the honour to him, but it IS NOT enough. He does not know, how to open both potentials- mental toughness and technical brilliance for his skaters. In difficult moments, when a skater truly needs his encouragement and wise guidance, he is flat to give any. Of course, it depends of skaters personality , too. Though, even a strong person in difficult times needs someone with a clear mind , and wise advice; directions where "to settle the ship". Arutunian is the one, at the same time- all the honour to him for doing all the best he can.

RAF needs a team to complement his technical knowledge. Imagine what his center would be with fitness coaches, dance & choreo coaches, and a counselor for competitive stresses. It works in Montreal, Toronto and to a lesser degree at DSC, Canton, and Colorado Springs. It is a matter of finding the right people and being able to trust and work with them. I wonder if RAF could be a team player or if he feels he needs to be in control. Kinda the same as Tom Z.

Anyone else love reading Dick Button on twitter... loved having him participate even if we see things differently at times. His mind and wit are as sharp as ever. Hoping he sends Nathan some advice...

I don't know guys. Nathan, up to the team event, was undefeated. He won both his GPs and the GPF (yes, I know the field was diluted somewhat). I don't think it was off base to say he was a gold medal contender.

I'm going to go on a limb and say that media hype was probably just part (and not even a big part) of his issues. Sometimes you want something so bad, you overthink it, which is what I think actually happened here. I hope he recovers in the free.

However, I am delighted for the guys who did so well. Yuzu, Javi and Boyang were my favorite skates for the evening and I also enjoy Shoma and Dmitri as well. Patrick was beautiful and I'm happy Adam did well, but I think he's done that program better at other competitions. I also was glad to see Jorik do well! The Olympics works for him! :)
