Wow, what happened to Irina ?

Irina

Ya know, since Irina came back the way she did from her initial bout of vasculitis to become world champion in 2005, win two GP events in 2005, silver at the 2005 GPF and bronze at 2006 Olympics, I am not willing to count her out of anything. What an amazing comeback!

Sp right now, she doesn't want to compete, and I think her conditioning is fine for her current schedule of doing shows and exhibition numbers. I think her weight is fine too. I believe if Ira wants to compete again, she has the ability to train back to a level where she would be able to win GP events again, maybe even another world championship. After all, she has done it once already. And if she wants to continue to do shows and exhibitions and enjoy a less intense training schedule, she certainly deserves it.

BTW - I love her longer hair in that gypsy number.

Oh no !She's skating with props she has jumped the shark!

Give her a break it is only one performance!

Clara Bow grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. My mother was a friend of hers. It truly was a depressing era in more ways than one.

I acutally liked that dress. Much better than the pants she wore for her short programs the last two seaons. The pants only played up things that she would have preferd to hide.

I so disagree with this... I think more ladies should check out how cool Irina looked in the unitard and adopt it for themselves... just imagine how cute Emily would look in the uni... leave the short dresses to the wiafs...

I second the "pants / unitard" movement. Some peoples ideas of "too large," or "Not features to be shown" I do not get at all. And more pants or unitards for this guy please. I LOVE them. FOI with She-Lynn and Naomi in pants    Holy McMoly that is "smoken" good looking to view. From Ira to Fumie, I see no weight issue being in the "attractive sense." Both of them and anyone in between is just wonderful    as long as it is not Unhealthy.

And the scarf and "whip off dress" LOVED IT! - for what it was used for.

Still wishing Ira would have someone front row eating a burger and go up, grab it from him, and take a little bite, hand it back and skate off to start the pro. LOL

Your question: "What happened to Irina?" Well, I Irina is no longer a teenager; she is a married lady and is no longer in amateur competition. So.....a more mature look and she does not have to jam pack her programs with a lot of difficulty the way she used to. This looked like a real light hearted piece. She can still move across the ice with joy like she always did. I don't think the costume was the best choice - too much material in the skirt. I can see why she threw it to the side. Also the tv camera can appear to put ten pounds on a person. I hought it was a nice show number. Quite entertaining.

Watch this clip of Irina's performance at Japan Super Challenge.

Wow, I can't believe my eyes. She's completely out of shape after staying out of amature skating for a short 9 months period. This is incredible. Anybody who thinks she can still compete is just daydreaming.

She isn't out of shape!! She has normal weight now. Before she was unhealthily skinny. I hope that her health is better now.
I enjoyed her show, she is entertaining! I prefer when skaters don't do jumps and concentrate in presentation when doing shows. And the costume was OK also, because the character she rapresented was a gypsy. ;)

I couldn't disagree more - i thought the short program trouser costumes looked stunning on her. They were very flattering and showed off her good lines (compared to the flowing longer skirts she seems to prefer for the LPs) and she looked really fab.

And also with the SP pants she looked taller. When you watch her SP, would you say that she is just 160cm?

She looked okay to me, maybe gained a little weight but that's to be expected when one's training regiment changes. Aside from taking too long in her preparation for the first 2a, she did well.

Irina's number was cute, she looked happy and I loved the long hair. As to her weight I think she went from a size 2 to a size 4. I wish I had her weight problem.

 Yes, it's good to keep skater weights in perspective. She's also wearing dumpy clothes in this one.

But what was really nice was seeing how much fun she was having. She's a good dancer! Right on the music and totally smooth and entertaining.

Add me to the list who enjoyed Irina's program. I also did not think her size was that alarming, and think her dress did her no favors. Even last spring, I thought the dress she wore for "Big Spender" was not very flattering and made her appear heavier than she really is. To see Irina in person is to realize how small she truly is. Pictures and TV don't flatter her for some reason.

That said-I think Irina tends to pick long skirts because she's rather bow-legged. I think she has a GREAT set of legs and should show them off more often!

I was wondering why MKFSfan was talking about dresses and legs when suddenly I realized I was mixing up Irina's gypsy skate with this other one. This is the one that looked like so much fun to me:

Catch the crowd response, too. They obviously still love her.

Wow, that's even more alarming! But I agree with you, the crowd is still loving her and she is definitely having fun.
