Would Lipinski have won Nagano under CoP?

I just don't think that was the case, i don't think Kwan lost the gold medal i think Lipinski won it. Kwan did a very strong good LP. Most north aericans who saw US nationals seem to talk about the Olympic LP as if it was tentative and as if she held back. The rest of the world that was not privy to the US nationals felt it was a truly amazing performance and worthy of Olympic gold. After Kwan skated i thought she'd won it, BBc commentators thought she'd won it (just as kulik had gone out first in his group and won it). Then Lipinski went out and blew the roof off. No damning or poor skate for Kwan and nothing to take away from Tara's impressive free skate either.

ITA! Furthermore, the people who downgrade Michelle's performance also denigrate Tara's (IMO). Actually, Tara is the only skater, since 1996, to have defeated a Kwan who skated clean in all phases of the event -- which indicates just how good a skate it was!

You bring up a very good point. In any other year, MK would likely have won with that performance. For US fans who saw her ethereal performance at Nationals, her performance at Oly's paled. Our expectations were set much higher for MK.

As I mentioned before, I am an a MK fan and felt that Tara did deserve that win. However, one night does not make my favorite skater.

Yes, but there was a multitude of nonKwan fans who enjoyed the moment and they looked closesly at Irina and Sasha to repeat what Tara accomplished. But Irina and Sasha were not able to do it even with a crippled Kwan.

Ugh, whatever.

Her Triple/Triple "sequence" (whatever, it's a combination.....a 3Toe, STEP, 3Sal would be a sequence)
And Slutskaya didn't fall on her 3Loop in Torino and she won the gold medal, because I want this to be so.

What do facts or rules have to do with it?

Of course Kwan skated well in Nagano freeskate, but she lost the gold because of that freeskate. The way I see it, she just did not skate as well as she did at US Nationals. There she looked really strong and had the feeling which lacked in Nagano freeskate. If she had skated as strongly and with the same feeling, she would have won the Olympic gold, in my opinion. After the short programme Kwan had every chance to win, but she left the door open for Tara.

Yeah, some commentators have the habit of "announcing" a winner before the competition is over.... The British Eurosport commentators lots of times used to say something like "this was a good performance, but will it be enough?".

Your seem to equate that a win in an Olympics means 'the greatest skater in the world'. Would that go for Sasha and Irina as well?

I don´t think you got me right and don´t understand how you came to that conclusion from my above posting, Joe? No way do I think that e.g. Tara was the greatest skater in the world, because she won in Nagano. She though won and she deserved the win (although I did not like it and had hoped for Kwan to win, LOL). And so Tara is on that very short list of female Olympic champions in figure skating, and the youngest one.

A win at the Olympics is a win at the Olympics though, LOL. Skaters under different kinds of rules have won, because the rules were like that (e.g. Schuba), and while their freeskate performances were not great. It is though wonderful for a skater to be able to overcome that huge Olympic pressure (especially those skaters who are seen as possible winners) and to win with a great, strong performance. Tara and Ilia did that in Nagano.

The win at the Olympics is the biggest competition achievement a figure skater can get. That is not the same in every sport, but in figure skating it is the biggest win there is.

Sorry Jaana. It's early morning here and I'm not quite awake. You are right that you were just talking about 'that night', and btw, I agree.

The only point i was making was that the LP in isolation was brilliant - it moved me to tears. It did the job that had to be done - she laid it all down and in my opinion performend it amazingly well. Others who saw her nationals perofmance rubbished it. At the time i couldmn't believe what i was reading on the internet from people. Some of the reports of her skates and comments would have you believe that she did nothing more than land the jumps. To someone who never saw the natioanls performance - oit moved me to tears. If only some other skater's iffy, tentative, so-so performances would be so good! The even more surprising thing is the number of Kwan fans who slate that performance, IMO, only to take away from Tara's win by going on and on ad nauiseam that if kwan had skated like at natioanls Tara wouldn't have had a chance...well woulda coulda shoulda. Kwan performed exceptionally - as well as she ever could under the pressure of the Oylympics, a performance that might have been better at natioanls, but that wold undoubtedly win every competition before and after it, included SLC. Tara won her gold medal, Kwan did not lose it.

The short list -- ladies who won five or more World Championships over the course of their careers.

:bow:Herma Szabo, Germany
:bow::bow:Sonia Henie, Norway
:bow:Carol Heiss, U.S.A.
:bow:Michelle Kwan, U.S.A.

The remarkable part about the above is that nine years later this point still needs to be made... its also remarkable that nine years later someone will declare you're missing the point... ;)

I think Tara will be remembered as an Olympic champion who won in a classic battle with an equally worthy opponent. Like Brian Boitano and Brian Orser in 1988.

And, remarkably, in a time when there wasn't much movement because of school figures, she won her first World Championship by beating her archrival, the newly crowned Olympic Champion and reigning World Champion, Tenley Albright.

Yes, and even a shorter list including those who also won the gold medal in the biggest competition of figure skating, Olympics:

- Szabo
- Henie
- Heiss

Didnt Herma Szabo also win a couple World titles in pairs? Speaking of very distant past greats like Szabo and Henie I also recall reading an interesting story of how Szabo was defeated by Henie at the 1927 Worlds when Henie won her first World title. Szabo was from Austria I should point out. At the 1926 Worlds the very young Henie had advanced from an 8th and last at the 1924 Olympics as an 11 year old to 2nd at the 1926 Worlds as a 13 year old behind only reigning queen of the sport-1924 Olympics and 1922-1926 World Champion Szabo. At the 1927 Worlds there were 5 judges and Szabo won the Austrian judge(her own judge) and the German judge, but there were 3 Norwegian judges and all 3 voted for Henie giving her the gold on a 3-2 split. There was huge controversy over this result and it was then was the rule was implemented for there to be allowed only 1 judge per country at events. I also read Szabo's fury over this result is what caused her to retire from competition and not compete for a 2nd Olympic Gold in 1928. I would say back then though the Austrian and German federations were notorious for working together and since the 2 judges who voted for Szabo were from those countries there was probably 0 neutral judges on that panel and it is next to impossable to have any idea who was the real winner between the two at those Worlds.
