Thanks for this. Good idea -- I was actually going to ask all you all if you had any "greatest hits" recommendations as a way to cheer ourselves up.

Ah, the American networks... the masters of cheesy backstories.

One earnest question, though: why were the commentators all so confused by her 3Lo + Eu + 2S? They were like "it seemed like she stepped out of her loop landing but she turned it into a combo -- amazing!" Had they never seen an Euler before? Was it uncommon then?
To be honest, you can't really blame the American commentators for this particular comment. Many Eulers (honestly, almost all) look like step-outs. Rika Kihira has a nice Eu. Sofia A. also has a nice Euler but those are honestly the only two skaters even now who I can think of that don't make their Eulers look like step-outs

Maria was a great skater. I love her mature womanly skating. However, that Euler does look like a step out.

You sorta can, if Butyrskaya had skated similar combinations before. It implies that the commentators didn't do their homework, which to me is pretty unforgivable considering they're getting paid to commentate the event. The least they could do is look at the top competitors' past skates.

That could be, but Bute was such a trippy, awkward and clumsy skater. It's really hard to blame the commentators. I remember when Dick Button was commentating some competition with Nancy Kerrigan and he gasped during her footwork thinking she stumbled. He obviously didn't know that Kerrigan's stumble was actually intended as part of her choreography. Why would she do that? Ask Mary, I guess. But Maria is the kind of skater that looks like she's made a mistake even if she actually didn't.

Yes, this was Butyrskaya's skate of her life. Dick Button was usually very critical about her, criticising her sometimes stiff landing leg, and he never had any good to say about her spins. I think this is the only time DB had something nice to say about her.

Well, in DB's defense, this WAS the first time Maria did that Euler combo. He was very well aware of Maria's past skates.

Thanks all! For a while I got a little obsessed with finding nice-looking Eulers. (There's even a thread on it here at Golden Skate somewhere.)

I do remember Sasha (Trusova) putting together some Euler combos that I thought were beautifully done because of the *timing* of them, or flow or something like that. Or *rhythm* maybe is the best word: as if you could tap a beat to the whole sequence, the first triple then the Eu then the next triple. Wish I had kept links...

I’m wayyy to young for Dick Button and his commentary, but from what I’ve heard he was usually pretty critical to anyone who wasn’t American.

Surya Bonaly did very nice ones in her toe-salchow combos around 1994. She usually carried great speed between those jumps and I cringe when I see most Eulers now where the skater has lost so much speed on the first jump's landing.
