While waiting for the women's FS to start over in Las Vegas and trying not to fall asleep, I decided to try to figure out how many spots for RusNats are up for grabs at the Cup of Russia.

Men with a GP assignment are automatically qualified. These are (in order of their assignments):
1. Artur Danielian
2. Makar Ignatov
3. Alexander Samarin
4. Evgeni Semenenko
5. Dmitri Aliev
6. Petr Gumennik
7. Mikhail Kolyada
8. Daniil Samsonov
9. Andrei Mozalev
10. Mark Kondratiuk

Juniors who reached the Junior Grand Prix Final also receive a bye to senior nationals if they are age eligible. These are:
11. Gleb Lutfullin
12. Ilya Yablokov
13. (Kirill Sarnovsky)?
14. Egor Rukhin

Kirill Sarnovsky was born on July 1st 2006, so correct me if I'm wrong, but he won't be eligible to skate at senior nationals this year, right?

This leaves 5 spots (or 4 if Kirill can compete) for the men qualifying through CoR. If my cold doesn't get better soon, I might become so bored lying around all day that I'll draw up a table to figure out the current ranking. I'll get back to you with the results...

He is age eligible as skaters born in 2007 are also eligible for senior nats.

The Russian cup this year is the one where the senior age eligibility is capped at being born prior to July 2007.

They still need to skate in Cup of Russia senior stages to make RusNats as seniors

The Russian Olympic Committee has published a list with the candidates for the Russian Olympic team: https://olympic.ru/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Spisok-sportsmenov-kandidatov-v-OK_2021.pdf (pages 7 and 8 cover figure skating).
There are some notable omissions on the list. Does anyone know how this works? Do athletes have to be on this list to be considered for the Olympics at all?
Let's say Gleb Lutfullin proceeds to have the season of his life, winning RusNats (stranger things have happened in Russian men's figure skating) and taking gold at Europeans. Would Russia leave him at home for the Olympics, because he wasn't on the list?

I think this list is just "Athletes who should be ready for the Olympics.". There're a lot of mistakes in it (Samodelkina isn't age eligible but she's on the list) so I don't take it seriously.

Thanks for the reassurance! So I don't have to bury my wild dream of Alexey Erokhov winning an Olympic bronze behind Zhenya Semenenko's silver just yet. 😝

When the time comes that the russian men will perform this clean at bit international comeptitions...
We've only seen the SP even here. Let's wait till tomorrow. But this once again raises the question when Russia finally manages to pull together components, jumps, and the ability to perform when needed in one figure skater (also and above all health, obviously). Too many skaters with some but not all of the above.

Yes because russian men's normally only do one program great the other is reserve for pops and falls. Is in the rules:coffee:

Well, these exceptional skaters come along only once in a generation. Russia had Plushy fifteen years ago, then Japan had Hanyu, now the US have Nathan. Maybe Russia will have the next big talent again, who knows. In the meantime I'm delighted with the glimpses of greatness we see from time to time in the Russian men.

Too many of the ~2003 generation also managed to grow to the size more suited to pairs. I am doubtful you can go far in singles skating with such dimensions, but who knows, maybe there will finally be someone who does it.

Samarin used to be considered tall, now there are smth like 5 young skaters who are taller than him.

Looking forward to catching up on the camp with both Yablokov and Erokhov, though I favorites Yablokov because of the music of his programs and they are more beautiful to me.

Also, prediction contest for Denis Ten so hard, because I want Mozalev to do well and win so much… and I know how unlikely it is, so… dunno how to handle my heart vs mind conflict. But, given zero net effect the accuracy of my predictions have on my life, I am going with the blind faith in the quiet guy.

Go for it! I also put Andrei M. in first, no regrets! ;)

I think there are a lot of potential big talents in Russia tbh. The U.S. has Ilia, Japan has Yuma and Shun. But Russia has Mark K, Zhenya Semenenko, Artur Danielian, Andrei M, Yablokov, Erokhov, Kovalev... I mean, the list goes on.

Russia is just so whole-listic when to come to skating!

@CrazyKittenLady (fistpump) No regrets! I also pushed Shaidorov up too, because the kid was impressive and I wished so much he had the second JGP stage and he could have, and… anyway. Obviously, hoping above all for a no-huge-upsets competition.
