This reminded me, Kondratiuk has a nice sense of humour. When he was asked if he was nervous at Nebelhorn, he replied "only in the sense that if I don't confirm the third spot, I am dead". And that every guy was sitting there going "please don't send me to Nebelhorn, please don't send me to Nebelhorn...". And that was just an Olympics spot, not a gold medal for a bunch of people on the line. Of course the reward is greater, but Sokolovskaya sounded rather nervous when asked about it. Not knowing if you will be picked on top of the responsibility itself must add to this.

He seems quick-witted, yes, and a bit edgy

It's not known yet if it is an injury, but Lutfullin's had rather a lot of those considering his age. At one point he was even told to give up his skating career because of back problems. And people ask why the Russian men have trouble transitioning to seniors.

RusFed cares about medals, not skaters. Right now they are scurrying around trying to satisfy various interest groups and avoid being called on the carpet by the Minister of Sports to explain why they butterfingered the team gold. The skaters' well-being is rather low on the list of priorities.

Yeah, and it's not like the Russian men are that weak. And the field is rather deep and getting deeper. What annoys me the most is how their own Russian public loves to bash them. Currently there is a new saviour (totally different from all those previous saviours). Memory of a goldfish.

Yes. Imo, the solid goal is to keep 3 men in the running—which they could achieve with that depth, but no obvious podium contender. Aliev was really, really almost there, but alas. He is the greatest loss to Covid for Russian skating. For me, Kondratyuk’s emergence is not a bad thing, it is a good thing. He has better build and mindset than the others. And I really hope that Mozalev’s remaining 3 or so years will be better.

Mozalev is about to be 19, not sure about Aliev, but I sure hope neither will retire! I meant this in the narrow context of 2020-2022 seasons.

I really do too. I had never connected to Kolyada, despite recognizing his quality, but Aliev clicks so easily with me.

Yes I feel sad for Aliev. His short program was really beautiful this season. Hope he can come back strong again. Russian men's is like the next new kid on the block...you never know who will be in the mix!!

I hope so much that Aliev will have a beautiful comeback next season. He had two difficult seasons in a row and my biggest fear is that he will give up and retire. Please, Dima, stay with us.
