Women's FS - 2022 Olympics: Thoughts?

I don't know anyone who thinks Evan was a decent skater much less legendary. But then I called him rigor mortis on skates while watching the 2010 OG. Fluidity was not his strong suit.

2010 Olympic champion, 2009 World champion (and two World bronzes), two-time Four Continents champion, 2009 GPF, two-time US champion.

Yeah you’re right —I can’t imagine why anyone would consider Lysacek, one of the few who won every major senior title, and medaled in 21 of his 26 senior international competitions… a “decent” skater.

Personally I still don't understand how Lysacek won gold in 2010 when surely the judges must have fallen asleep during his performance. Does anybody outside the US still remember him aside from for the Plushenko thing?
Btw I believe Daisuke had the best skate except for that fall and he should have won...

Thought I would share this - footage from the room that the top 3 were in at the ladies FS that NBC did not show on TV. Shcherbakova was comforting Kaori until the Japanese Fed arrived and Daniil did go into the room and hug Shcherbakova, he then left and if you watch at the end you can see Trusova at the edge of the curtain that separated the room and someone pull her out - IMO maybe to get her away from Shcherbakova to meltdown over losing the gold.

So my stink eye about this whole debacle is no longer with Daniil (I think we all remarked it was odd to see him not congratulate Shcherbakova since he has always seemed close to her), but solely with NBC, who based on this, only used specific camera shots to feed a narrative.

***Plus I think this also helps further explain the muted expression from Shcherbakova, while Kaori's reaction was certainly from overwhelming happiness, it was emotion overload. And kudos to the Japanese Fed for appearing to congratulate Shcherbakova.

Thanks for sharing! I was wondering when Danill congratulated Anna, and was pretty sure NBC was selectively showing footage of Anna being alone while all the other girls broke down. NBC sure goes for the drama . Anna certainly seems to be made of steel. It's so sweet that Anna was comforting Kaori and to me, it looks like Anna alerted the Japanese team to Kaori's situation so they could come and help out. If Anna were ever a coach, I would definitely send my kids to her.

That's not NBC's fault. This footage is from Japanese TV feed. It was also never aired on other channels that used the official broadcaster feed, for example Eurosport.
So no need to accuse NBC of conspiracy.
Also, that still does not add anything positive to what we already saw. On the other feed, we saw Dudakov also coming briefly to hug Anna.

Why would Kaori need comforting? She was thrilled to win an Olympic medal. My guess is that Anna and Kaori were congratulating each other. Trusova was the only one outraged at not getting gold.

Right!!!! Evan might not have been my favorite skater but......He was an amazing competitor and a rock under pressure.

I've always wondered a bit about that OGM and just re-watched Lysacek's and Plushenko's performances again. My take after 12 years:

Plushenko's LP was totally front-loaded -- hardly any jumps in the 2nd half -- and Lysacek's choreography was much more sophisticated. Moreover, Plushy didn't seem at all engaged with the music or even with the performance itself. I had the feeling he basically just phoned it in.

Lysacek always seemed to me like sort of a journeyman, getting the job done but never especially exciting. On that night, though, he really brought his A game. He had the skate of his life -- focused, involved, and at times even passionate.

On balance, IMO the judges got it right.

edit: and yes, if Daisuke hadn't fallen, I think absolutely he would have won. The rest of his skate was great. It's always a shame when all the competitors don't skate their very best.

Judges should be encouraged to use the greater range between 4 - 10, rather than mostly 8.5 - 9.5 with such limited range can be easily manipulated and makes PCS efforts negligible.

You're also talking about the best of the best when you get to the Olympic level. That PCS scale also has to include scores for events like Peru Junior Nationals (if they have one), so I'd expect skaters who meet the minimums for big events to be in the higher range of scores.

I've liked Trusova well enough in prior performances (none of which I have watched again lol), but I agree that this season demonstrated a lack of growth, or even a regression, in artistry and PCS components.

And whose fault is that? She should have been with Plushenko, but the Eteri bonus and the Olympics being so close ruined it. I hope she gets back to him. He posted a very nice congratulatory message on Instagram to her and Kamila. He would take her back in a heartbeat. With him there was almost immediate improvement. I'm not a Plushenko fan and I'm sure he's not the perfect coach, but he's better for her and she already knows what technique he teaches, it would be a smoother transition than going to someone completely new. Personally, I would be a bit disappointed, and concerned, if she choses to stay with Eteri.

I always thought Kozuka should have won .... He did a quad and had a great performance ( and yummy skating skills)

I agree. I thought she showed improvement right away with Plushenko. It's not that she didn't improve in this aspect when she went back to Eteri. It's that she lost what she had gained under him.

Evan won for the same reason the Eteri girls are winning. They used the judging system in their favor and found a way to get a the highest points possible. You can’t criticize his without acknowledging the Russian girls do the same. Evan won fair and square. But was he competing in the 2022 Olympics for ladies? I must’ve missed him.

I absolutely would’ve given Sasha the gold over Anna. 5 quads? Girl was amazing!! I don’t blame her for the honest reaction. In 2018 Zagitova won based on her jumping all in the 2nd half of the program. Trusova should have won for using this judging system to her advantage as well. To be honest, more people are talking about her program than Anna’s. It was just more interesting and exciting to see the little girl doing the impossible.
