JSF is doing an excellent job with their selections. I was taking a look at the top ten seasonal best scores and Japan has 7 of the top 10, in the world, at this moment. All 7 are scheduled to compete at one of the upcoming three most important events: 4CC, Junior Worlds and Senior Worlds

I also want to pint out that the girls I think they will send to Junior Circuit next year: Ikura, Ayumi, Yurina and You, all get one of these events coming up. Good exposure for them.

Rion, Mana, Rika - these are the 8th-10th best skaters from Japan. Rion already finished the University Games where she finished 4th. Mana gets Challenge Cup (coming up) and Rika gets Luxembourg (coming up). Only disappointment is Yuna who finished 7th at Nationals and gets nothing.

4CC - Mone and Hana; Mone just won the Junior portion of the Japan Games; Hana only finished in 4th. She is the one I’m most worried about. To me, these are the 6th and 7th best skates from Japan, at this moment. They get a chance to prove something at this event.

Junior Worlds - Mao and Ami; these were the two strongest Juniors. Mone being so close. But, they get to focus on Junior Worlds and I think will be able to bring Japan back to three spots.

Rinka - Gets 4CC and Senior Worlds; she was fantastic at the Japanese Games… she finally listened to me, and removed the lutz at the end of the free skate and replaced it with a triple loop and skated the free skate cleanly. She finished in 2nd behind Kaori and ahead of Mai. She showed she deserved this slot. She showed she is the 3rd best senior lady skater from Japan this year.

Kaori/Mai - They compete together at every event. These are the 1-2 skaters from Japan. They get to practice at Challenge Cup in February, one final time before Worlds. I think it is a smart move to avoid 4CC. Isabeau is their biggest threat and will have the home advantage in USA. Mai has won everything internationally and was fantastic at University Games beating Kaori. Kaori, meanwhile skates excellent domestically. Her two clean events was Japanese Nationals and the most recent event, the Japanese Games, where she skated 230+ at both events.

Why does Rinka Watanabe get to compete both at 4CC and Worlds but Mai and Kaori only got Worlds? Did they decline 4CC?

I’m pretty sure neither Sakamoto and Mihara declined 4CC. I think Jfed simply decided to split their assignments due to the deep field. They made an exception for Watanabe because she needs to have a competition before Worlds. She’s not exactly inspiring confidence considering her general inconsistency and 12-place finish at Nationals.

Watanabe did what she needed to do at 4CC, though. Is she the best choice? No. Chiba isn’t exactly chopped liver and she’s beaten Watanabe at Nationals and again at 4CC. But Watanabe did well enough and if she keeps her head about her at Worlds, she should make the top 10.

Hmm. There’s her compatriots and she lost to all three Korean ladies at 4CC (and that’s the World team), then there’s Levito, Tennell, Hendrickx (who’s lost momentum) and Gubanova. Hmm. She could be as high as fifth or as low as 12th.

I agree that neither Kaori nor Mai declined 4CC. According to the timeline, I think they committed to Universiade first. And then the 4CC decision (by JSF) came later. Another main reason I could think of from JSF to assign Mone and Hana to 4CC is because of lacking of competitions in the past 2 seasons for skaters turning from Jr to Sr. Since both (Mone and Hana) would not get JWC this year, JSF want to make sure to get them enough explosure so as to help them transition to Sr. next season (It looks fine for Mone now, and she did mention moving up to Sr. next season. But for Hana to get further support, perhaps some more consistancy will be needed...)

New international assignments from JSF:

Coupe de Printemps (March 17-19, Luxembourg)
Senior Men: Koshiro Shimada, Takeru Amine Kataise (Alternate: Sena Miyake)
Senior Women: Mone Chiba, Rika Kihira
Junior Men: Tsudoi Suto, Seigo Tauchi
Junior Women: Ami Nakai, You Takagi
Updated as of Feb 22nd:

Rika Kihira has WD-ed from CdP, as she's still recovering from the injury.
On the other hand, Sena is now moving from Alt. to competitor (I hope JSF could do the same with the Sr. Women's, but there was no alternate for Sr. women as announced previously. So...)

Too bad for Rika. But, this is a good opportunity for Sena, who I enjoy.

Good for Sena, he's been really unlucky this season. Out of last year's Nats top 10, he and Kao were the only ones outside the top 3 who didn't get any CS or Bs this season. I wish Rion and Rino had gotten an opportunity at a B event, too. Rino especially, as she was almost as unlucky as Sena, and now her Nationals result will not qualify her for any support from JSF if I'm not mistaken. I'm still hoping to see her in B support though, when the new lists come out.

I look forward to seeing her in seven years for her Olympic debut! She's already one of the top 5 skaters in the WORLD now, imagine how good she'll be in seven years!!! Another four years of junior skating will really do her wonders, I'm sure. I can't wait to see how she'll develop with all that time in Juniors.

It's a mix of MF Academy skaters (Yuna Aoki, Rio Nakata) + Kinoshita Academy (everyone else).

Finally a later competition for Yuna A. I wasn't too surprised that she didn't get either Challenge Cup nor CdP, but it's nice that she gets an assignment eventually.
